( i i 4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 14, 1984 Section Two SHOPPING Waverley and Base Line YOU FAVOR? To the Residents of Newcastle: Your Town Council voted 4-3 to deny the re-zoning of the Pythbow Lands at Waverley and Base Line Roads in Bowmanville for a retail shopping centre. This, despite the evidence that a tremendous amount of shopping is currently done outside the community. |THE REGIONAL COUNCIL APPROVED THIS DEVELOPMENT Council supported local shopping and free competition. A newspaper survey conducted in 1982 showed that over 95% of the residents of Newcastle favor the centre. We believe your Town Council is wrong in opposing the centre and the wishes of the general public. In our opinion the Council is listening to some merchants and not the community as a whole. The centre will provide: JOBS -- for 200 people TAXES -- about$250,000 a year SERVICES -- a $250,000 contribution will be made Is it not true that you have one of the highest residential tax bases in the region? How do you get that lowered without more Commercial and Industrial Assessment? Your Council is presently spending taxpayers' money to oppose this centre at the upcoming Ontario Municipal Board Hearing. Please attend the O.M.B. Hearing starting at 10:00 a.m. November 19th, 1984 in the Former Town Hall King Street and Mill Street VILLAGE OF NEWCASTLE Your presence counts. We will ask the O.M.B. to give members of the public a chance to be heard. If you are part of a group in support and wish to speak at the O.M.B. Hearing, please call us and we will arrange for you to get a hearing. Call: LOUIE NUSPL, C.A. Home 286-2272 (Pickering)
