i 6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 21,1984 Section Two OBITUARIES ELIZABETH VIOLA EDDYVEAN A school teacher by profession, profession, Elizabeth Viola Eddy- vean, aged 81, passed away on Thursday, October 18th, 1984, in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. Bowmanville. She had been ill two and a half weeks. Daughter of Herbert and Sarah Short, she was born in Hampton and educated at Hampton Public, Bowmanville Bowmanville High and Peterborough Normal School. On August 20th, 1941, she was married to John Sydney Eddyvean. A resident of Bowmanville for 10 years at 98 Church Street, she had previously resided in Orono. She had taught school at Bobcaygeon (Cane), Sutton Bay School, New Liskeard, Tyrone and at many schools in the north. Mrs. Eddyvean never missed a day teaching in the northern schools where no transportation transportation was available. She had many hobbies and achieved distinction with her poetry, sketches and paintings. paintings. Surviving are stepsons William of New Liskeard, Henry of Cambridge, Robert of Spokane, Washington, U.S.A., two nephews and a Captain Ellis Cuff of the Bowmanville Salvation Army Corps officiated at the funeral services held on Saturday at the Morris Funeral Chapel. Pallbearers were Messrs. Herb Prescott, W. Adams, Henry Eddyvean, Erin Prescott, Prescott, Murray Eddyvean and Robt. O-Kraska. Interment Hampton Cemetery. MRS. SOPHIA KOVACS After a lengthy illness in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, Sophia Ko vacs passed away peacefully on Friday evening, October 26th, 1984, in her 83rd year. Born in Bekes, Hungary, she was married to Gabriel Kovacs on May 12th, 1921. She {migrated to Canada with her young son, to join her husband who previously had come to Montreal, Quebec. In 1933 they moved to Darlington Darlington township, near Maple Grove until 1938 when they bought and moved to the present present farm in the Long Sault Community. Known to all, both young and old as a good and kind neighbour, she lived for her family and friends. She is survived by her one son Gabriel S., two granddaughters, granddaughters, Judy Luke and Louise Kovacs, arid one great granddaughter, Danielle S. Luke. Her husband predeceased predeceased her in 1955, and three brothers, one sister in Hungary Hungary and one brother in Germany. Funeral services were held on Tuesday from the Morris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Joe Lafave giving many comforting comforting words to all. Music was provided by Mrs. Albert Cole. Pallbearers were friends and neighbours Andrew Sutch, George Vandam, Jake Vandam, Getan Gable, Harold Murphy and Cecil Langlais. Many floral tributes from friends and donations to many organizations were received in her memory. Interment Bethesda Cemetery, Cemetery, in the family plot. WILLIAM THOMAS LAKE On November 3rd, 1984, William Thomas Lake, a well respected and lifelong resident resident of the Newcastle and Lakeshore Area was laid to rest. He spent his life as a very successful dairy and fruit farmer, having been retired for the past 11 years. He suffered a stroke two years ago, showing great determination to regain full mobility, but it was all too short lived. He was a lifetime member of St. George's Anglican Church, and Masonic Lodge No. 66. He served on the Newcastle Newcastle School Board for many years. He was a very devoted family man, having raised six children. He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife Doreen, daughter Nancy Skelding, sons Bill, Don, Morley, Everett and Peter. Also 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Three sisters Phebe (Mrs. Harold Skinner), Win (Mrs. Clare Bombard), and the late Betty Brown. Funeral services were held from the Morris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. A. E. Haldenby officiating, sister- in-law Gladys Brown presiding presiding at the organ during the service, and grandson Jeffery Lake reading an appropriate poem. Pallbearers were grandsons Noel, Mark, Randy and Jeffery Lake, nephews Lloyd Skinner, Jack Brown and Clare Bombard. Many beautiful floral tributes tributes were received, among them General Motors A Body, and the Maintenance Construction Construction Truck Plant, Durham Lodge No, 66, donations donations to (lie Bowmanville Hospital Building Fund and the Heart Foundation, Interment was in the St. George's Anglican Cemetery, Newcastle, AMELIA AGNES LANCASTER A well known and highly respected citizen of the area, Amelia Agnes Lancaster, aged 72, passed away on Sunday, September 30th, 1984 in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Suffering a heart attack a year ago, she had partially recovered but succumbed to a sudden illness and heart attack. Born in Pore Hope, and educated at Port Hope and Port Britain schools, she was the daughter of William T. Nichols and Martha Brown Nichols. On October 30th, 1940, she was married to Sidney John Lancaster. A resident at R.R. 2, Newcastle Newcastle for 37 years, she had recently resided at 450 Beaver Street South, Newcastle, for six years. For 37 years she had been secretary of the family business, Lancaster's Garage, retiring six years ago. Mrs. Lancaster was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Newtonville United Church, the Eastern Star, the U.C.W., and the Women's Institute. Very active in church work, she was a member of the session at the time of her death. A remarkable woman she will be missed by many. Left to mourn her passing are her husband Sidney, a daughter Dorella (Mrs. Jack Chard), two grandchildren, all from Newcastle, and a brother Carroll Nichols of Port Hope. Funeral services were held at the Morris Funeral Chapel, Bowmanville, on Wednesday, with the Reverend Tom Smith officiating. Pallbearers were Messrs. Jack Kimball, Charles Crowther, Glen Farrow, Coe De Witt, Alfred Redknap, and James Clark. Honorary pallbearers were Messrs. Alfred Perrin, Ronald Burley, C. R. Farrow and C. M. Jones and Arthur Rienslra (absent). Among the many beautiful tokens received in her memory were offerings from O.R.F.E.D.A., the Eastern Star, Durham Chapter No. 181, the Newtonville U.C.W., and Durham Lodge No. 66. Interment Lakeview Cemetery. KATHRYN ELIZABETH BAKER Citizens of the area were shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Kathryn Elizabeth Elizabeth Baker, aged 37, in a tragic car accident in dense fog on Durham Road 20, Lot 1, Con. 9, on Saturday, October 27th, 1984. Born in Oshawa, and educated educated at Hampton Public School and Courtice Secondary School, she was the daughter of David and Marguerite Hall. On May 22nd, 1965 she was married to John Baker. A resident of Long Sault for 17 years, she had previously resided in Hampton. She had attended Bruno's Hairdressing, Toronto, and had worked as a hairdresser in Bowmanville for 16 years, at Greig's Hairdressing, and Artistic, and recently opened jointly Guys and Gals - Sheer Magic. She was a member of Hampton United Church. Left to mourn her passing are her husband John, sons Rick and Steve, her parents, a sister Darlene, in-laws Gord and Doris Baker and 16 nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Morris Funeral Home on Tuesday, with the Reverend Reverend Lafave officiating. A beautiful eulogy was delivered by Gwen Glass in honour of her special friend. Mrs. J/ Albert Cole presided at the chapel organ. Over 100 floral tokens were received in her memory including including tributes from Kut 'n' Kurl, Bowmanville Restaurant Restaurant and Tavern, M. Donations Donations were made in her memory to the Cancer Society, Memorial Hospital Bowmanville Building Fund, Sick Children's Hospital, Toronto, Hampton United Church, the Arthritis Society, the Canadian Bible Association, Association, the Ontario Heart Foundation, Foundation, and Simcoe Hall Crippled Children.
