( t I 10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 21,1984 Section Two Non-Contact Hockey A goal by the Flying Dutchman's No. 14 J. Robinson Robinson in the first, and a short- handed goal in the third by No. 12 J. Ayre, of the newly sponsored sponsored "Twin Brand Orchards" Beasties, was the only scoring in Saturday night's first round play. The odd penalty, four to the Dutchman and three to the Beasties, proved fatal to the lead the Dutchman had held from midway through the first, as the goal came :28 seconds after the Flying Dutchman player stepped into the box. Shots on goal reflect a very close checking game as Twin Brand's goalie faced only 12 shots while his counterpart counterpart faced 18. To date, the Beasties have been assessed 32 minor penalties and the Flying Dutchman boys 27. In Saturday's second round Barrett Electric shocked Toby's Pub with a 5 to 3 jolt. R. Hall was the spark for Barrett as he totalled three goals and two minor penalties. Toby's Pub's big scorer M. Clouthier managed two goals in his team's effort to overcome Barrett. Despite having eight powerplays in the game, Toby's mustered only 16 shots on goal. Barrett, on the other hand, had three powerplays and 20 shots. Barrett Electric are the league's leader in minor penalties, 45 assessed, compared with Toby's, who are last with 24 penalties served. Seldom, in our league, does a team that is outshot win the game. Shopper's outshot Courtice Auto Wreckers 34 to 29 but lost the game 3 to 2. Shopper's Drug Mart, who have 27 minor penalties to their credit this year, did not add to that total* as Courtice took all four minors assessed, to bring their team total to 26 minors. T. Klawitter scored twice for Shopper's while R. West, A. Junkin and J. Mather tallied for Courtice. Shopper's powerplay was shut down in all cases, while J. Mather's goal was scored while his team, Courtice, were short- handed. Clinic Pharmacy had the right prescription in the late game on Sunday, as they gave San Marino's a 5 to 2 headache. headache. B. Janilsch from I. Hamilton, his first point of the season, opened the scoring in the first period with the only recorded goal. Clinic continued continued to maintain a fast pace and again recorded the only goal in a period, the second. San Marino's came back with goals by W. Alder and D. Norton but were unable to catch Clinic, who had goals from P. Murdock with a pair, and D. Tulk, his first goal of the season. Penalties were four to Clinic, bringing their total up to 33, second in the league, and San Marino's had two, giving them 31 minors so far this season. Team Reps are reminded of the League Meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 1984at7:30 p.m. at the Flying Dutchman. At this time, arrangements will be discussed for the tournament. tournament. The Bowmanville Eagles hosted the Big and Little Brothers of the Town of Newcastle on Sun., Nov. 11, during the Junior 'C' contest against Little Britain. Little Britain Defeats Bowmanville Eagles 8-4 By Sam Laskaris What a difference a week makes. The Bowmanville Eagles who had one week earlier humiliated the Little Britain Merchants 9 - 1 in Little Britain lost to the same Merchants at home on Sunday by a score of 8 - 4. The Eagles never really were in this game as the Merchants scored early and took advantage of the opportunities that were given to them. The scoring was opened by the Merchants' Gord Thomson at 3:23 with assists credited to Glen Miller and Gord Cawker. The Merchants then beat Eagles' goaltender Don Hayes twice within a span of seven seconds forcing coach Paul Robinson to make a goal tending tending change. Willie Thornbury scored at 16:10 from Miller and Rob Louttit. Then at 16:17 Brian Beukaboom gave the Merchants a 3 - 0 lead when he scored from Miller and Louttit. Randy Ellis got Bowmanville Bowmanville onto the scoresheet at 16:37 when he connected on a pass from Glenn German. The Merchants however restored their three-goal lead going into the middle stanza when Tim Siddle beat Scott Hooper in the Eagles' net at 18:22. This was a powerplay effort by the Merchants and Chris McLean had the lone assist on ' the play. In the second period the Merchants continued from where they had left off in the first period. After only 28 seconds had elapsed Doug Taylor scored from Miller and Beukaboom. Then at 1:57 the identical trio teamed up to give the Merchants a commanding commanding 6 -1 lead. At 13:09 the Merchants' Taylor completed a natural hat trick when he scored from Jerry Vallier and Thornbury. Only eleven seconds later Mark Hickey scored the Eagles' second goal of the game from Brian Keenan and Andy Terry. In the final period the Merchants Merchants once again scored early. McLean was the goal- getter with the assists going out to Kevin Barker and S. Cawker at the 1:12 mark. Bowmanville was successful in scoring the game's final two goals but the old clichee "too little, too late" definitely applied to this encounter. Ellis scored his second of the evening at 5:20 from Brian Heard. Then on the powerplay Brad Clemens scored his first goal this year with the lone assist awarded to Ellis. This goal was scored while a delayed delayed penalty was going to be called against the Merchants and with Hooper out of the net in favour of an extra attacker. Special mention should go out to the Merchants' captain Miller who had five assists on the evening. For the Eagles Ellis not only scored twice and added an assist but in the final period he engaged in a fight with the Merchants' resident tough guy Vallier. The Eagles played again on Monday night in Cobourg (after our press deadline). The team's next game will be on Saturday in Port Perry with a slated starting time of 8:00 p.m. Then on Sunday the Lindsay Trent Muskies will provide the opposition for the Eagles at home. Results of all three games will be given in next week's Canadian Statesman. Statesman. Square Boy and Kool Enterprises Enterprises tangled in a physical game on Nov. 10 as the Square Boy club skated to a 4 - 0 win. The first period went scoreless with the close checking of both teams. All Square Boys defensemen played a big part by breaking up the plays throughout the game. The game broke wide-open in the second period as the big (M) making some good moves rushed from his own end and scored the first goal, assisted by Brad Richard and Shane Crombie. The game continued its steady pace as the Kool team came close to scoring only to have Mr. Brooks rob them of any would be goals. Mr. Brooks continuously played played a good strong game as he earned his shutout. Also having a big game for Square Boy was David Kichko as he scored their second goal assisted assisted by (way to go Joe) and Greg Raby. Square Boy's Shane Crombie playing a good game scored their third goal assisted by Brent Gibson. In the final period, the Kool team put on pressure again but with the suppôrt of the Square Boy squad held them off. With a good individual effort David Kichko scored their fourth goal as he stick- handled through the defense and in on goal to bang in his own rebound. There were some exciting moments for Square Boys in the last three minutes of the game as they were caught with two men in the penalty box. Mr. Brooks stood his ground again with good support from David Kichko. Jim McGregor and the D.J. did a good job forechecking forechecking the Kool team and good defensive play from David Kichko and the big (M) helped Mr. Brooks hold on to his shutout. Great game guys.
