2 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 21,1984 r & SMALL TALK By Donna Fairey Just because it's generally generally accepted by men that women are uncoordinated, uncoordinated, air heads behind the wheels of cars, doesn't necessarily necessarily mean that the opinion opinion is warranted. The conviction that females are a menace on the road may have had some credibility way back when, but hardly today. In the good old days when gals were rarely permitted behind the wheel of a Figure Skaters Bring Home Awards horseless carriage, the lack of practice alone was responsible for their doltish performances. performances. But today it's a different different matter altogether. Women who drive are as commonplace as the motor car itself. Only it seems that men have failed again to accept gracefully yet another ofthe changes thathave come to pass as a result of their counterparts' quest for equality. Personally, the shoe doesn't fit too well anymore anymore and I think a concerted concerted resistence movement should be organized against those who would make mock of women's driving abilities. What led me to this last straw outpouring outpouring was an embarrassing embarrassing incident Saturday. Saturday. There would have been no mortification whatsoever, had it not been for the guffaws of the three musketeers. The male witnesses made virtually no attempt attempt to veil their laughter when the wheels of my car mounted the curb throwing all and sundry inside the vehicle into brief but harmless gyration. gyration. Now I ask you, what in the Hades is so funny about that? So I miscalculated miscalculated a tad. But, oh yes, I forgot. forgot. Such a blunder is firmly attached to the "woman driver" image. Scrubbed whitewalls and all that - right? Well, I'd simply had enough and I told them so. But they didn't stop laughing when I rolled down the window and advised the three full grown males that I HATED it when they did that. However, what did they care? They've got their macho territory territory to protect and I, a female beast, have become become a poacher with all my new fangled ideas about wanting into the workplace and - yee / gads - demanding a motor car to get there. Let it be known to the three men who witnessed witnessed the recent curb incident incident that there are statistics available somewhere which fall in my favor. More accidents accidents involving male drivers are serious and/ or fatal. Accidents involving involving female drivers on the other hand are, by majority, minor and/ or fender benders.
