V 2 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 28,1984 Section Two Ebenezer Women Host Potluck Dinner On Monday evening, Nov. 12, 1984, about 150 people gathered for a delicious pot luck supper for the Ebenezer U.C.W. family meeting. After all of the appetites were satisfied, Mrs. Charlotte Hughes in the absence of president Mrs. Eileen Down welcomed the gathering. A rousing sing song followed led by Charlotte, Mrs. Mary Ann Found and Mrs. Brenda Metcalf. Mrs. Margaret Down very fittingly introduced our guest speaker by referring to Gordon Sinclair's book "Footloose in India." A captive audience sat spellbound spellbound as Paul Osborne, our man from Ebenezer, footloose in Europe and Asia shared the highlights of the experiences of his six month backpacking tour. • Paul described spending time living the life of the people of whose country you're in, eating their food, sleeping in the non-tourist hotels, playing with the children, threshing rice in China while standing ankle- deep in mud and bartering with the natives in Israel. Paul found that people the world over are all the same, where a smile can break the language barrier, and learning a few words in the language of that country fosters the best of relationships. He had the opportunity to visit Flanders Fields and the poem he learned at a young age "In Flander's Fields" took on a very special meaning for him. Paul had his very first taste of skiing on the professional slopes in Austria. Through good luck and sheer determination, he survived these high-flying experiences. Retracing the steps Christ walked, sleeping by the Sea of Galilee, swimming in the Dead Sea and watching the sun set on the Mount of Olives made his church and Sunday School teachings much more personal. Paul recounted an interesting incident that took place while spending time in the Sinai Desert with the Bedawin Tribe. He awoke one morning to find a camel munching on the roof of his reed hut. When visiting some Hungarian students in their dormitory, it became necessary for Paul and his New Zealand friend Mark, to make a speedy exit as police had arrived for inspection. Two bedsheets tied together served as an escape rope from Before yousendit, t>o<J Seal it. In their haste, Paul sustained a fractured arm and getting medical aid proved exasperating. After much manoeuvering, arrangements were made for Paul and Mark to travel to China, via the Soviet Union and Mongolia.' It was in Peking that Paul, purely by accident, met up with his cousin Jeff, son of George Osborne. Paul expressed how reassuring it had been to see someone from home. Among the many hilarious situations, Paul found himself in was one of receiving a hair cut on the street in China surrounded by a crowd of curious and amused onlookers. Encounters of every kind awaited Paul at each turn, serving to create the myriad of memories Paul now has of an unforgettable trip and of the complete sense of freedom it affords. Paul expressed his gratitude to family and friends who remembered him in prayer. During times of quietness, anxiety and loneliness, he felt a very real sense of comfort. His early training on the stage at Courtice Seondary along with his education in radio broadcasting provided an excellent background in holding the attention of his enthralled audience who departed saying they had never heard a better travelogue before. Truly, there could be no better ambassador for Canada than this fine young man ! How proud we are of him. The appreciation of the gathering was capably expressed by Paul's aunt, Mrs. Rae Osborne. On December 11, Mrs. Helen Herron will be in charge of our U.C.W. meeting with Mrs. Cassandra Wyszkowski from Oakwood bringing us a Christmas message. Babysitting will be provided. Please bring a wrapped gift for ladies at Destiny Manor. 1ER Competitive Prices -I'll - v I : : i SPRITE, DIET SPRITE, TAB, Diet Coke or _ . 750 mL BTL Coca Cola PLUS .30 PEP.
