JUNIOR CHOIR Our great junior choir has started. The junior grades are grades 4-6. The choir practises in the gym. They practise after school hours for about half an hour. The choir is fun and enjoyable and lets the students learn how to sing the proper notes. Poem of the Week - Silence Upon the street ahead of me, A whirling girl, only I can see, Dancing, like a wind set free, But suddenly around the corner, She disappeared, The wind stopped blowing, And silence swept over the town, The trees whispered and sighed, Oh, how silence sings! ! by Natalie Axelson This week Mrs. tenWeste- neind's class is working on number stories for the number 13. They are also studying nutrition. Jonathan Durish from Mrs. tenWesteneind's class wrote this poem. Fall Times The wind has just come, The day just begun, Why did the leaves fall? Oh no they can't, yet. Why did today make me say That leaves never were gay. Lori and Lisa Gowans donated two large pinalas from Venezuela to a grade one class at Waverley. Mrs. Freeman's Grade 6 class has been working on Legends, Mythology and Fairy Tales. They are also working on Africa. Australia was an interesting Environmental Environmental Studies assignment and students enjoyed everything. everything. VOLLEYBALL TEAMS Waverley had a tryout for girls volleyball. Several girls turned out but only a few will make it. The tryouts were on Tuesday, November 13 at 8:15 a.m. in our large gym. We have a lot of tall girls, fortunately. fortunately. There are several strong girls as well. Mrs. Freeman (grade 6) and Mrs. Clement (grade 4) will be supervising the team. Having a volleyball team gives the girls a chance to improve their skills and have fun. Go Girls, Go! The boys' tryouts were on Thursday, November 15 at 4:00 p.m. Mr. Ralfe and Mr. Gray will be supervising. Go Boys, Go! YELVERTON A number of local citizens over the years have done their bit to put our hamlet of Yelverton on the map in various fields of endeavour. Several years ago Moxie Whitney, during his tenure in our community, contributed to the cause. Currently, we have another resident through his musical presence and by making a name for himself and his band, is also putting Yelverton on the map. We refer, of course to Joe Alyward and the Yelverton Express - a musical group of six musicians who are going great guns not only in this section of Ontario, but also are catching on like wildfire in Western Canada. They recently cut a Long Playing Album called "Joe Alyward" which is extremely popular and they have recently come up with a new single in the past couple of weeks, composed by Joe himself. Yelverton Express recently taped a program with the Tommy Hunter Show which will by aired in the not too distant future. On Saturday evening we enjoyed listening and dancing to a fine variety of his music at the Pines, north of Peterborough. Future appearances will be at Newcastle, Bobcaygeon and the Lindsay Academy. We urge local residents to patronize these up-and- coming musicians and support them as well by purchasing their records. Perhaps we should get their autographs before they get too famous. Last Sunday, Mrs. Etta Robinson of Cavan spent the day with her family at the home of Judy and Frank Russo. Mrs. Robinson, a spry 92, still maintains her own household and runs her own show. Congratulations to Terry Malcolm who was awarded the most valuable player at the Keene Hockey Tournament for "Old Timers" this weekend. The pace of our country is definitely stepping up when one becomes an oldtimer at 35 years of age. Sympathy is extended to the family and relatives of the late Irene McNeil of the Fleetwood area - to her daughter Jean, sister Ella Wright (our mail- lady) and lier brother Howard Leslie. Mrs. McNeil passed away in Osliawa last weekend. Communion Service will be observed at the three points of Janelville charge on Sunday, Dec. 2 and possibly some baptisms. Relief aid for the starving Ethiopians is planned through either the Red Cross or the United Church of Canada for this area. Please give generously! The Murray Malcolm family held a family gathering on Sunday in honour of Marleah's birthday earlier in the week. Mr. and Mrs. Balfour Moore entertained a number of Mary's relatives on Sunday, those included her sister Mrs. Miriam Jenkins of Detroit, her niece Cathy Jenkins and fiancee David Fisher of Toronto, another niece and husband - Mr. and Mrs. Eric Leach, Karen and Andrew of Oshawa, I believe. 1 Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bain are pleased to have Harold's mother of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia visiting with them till after Christmas. A family gathering was held at the home of Mrs. Freda English of R.R. 4, Lindsay on Sunday in honour of an undetermined undetermined number of birthdays birthdays of her daughter Maureen Moore. Those scheduled to attend were Mrs. English naturally, Mr. and Mrs. Gil Avery and family of Lindsay, Oran, Maureen, David and Lynn Moore. A special musical treat was in store at Yelverton United Church on Sunday morning when Mr. Hiram Joseph of Oshawa provided two delightful delightful vocal solos. We received word this week that one of the six sons of Mr. and Mrs. Moxie Whitney who were former residents of our community, was killed this fall by electrocution. No further particulars have been provided.
