It's gorgeous large flowers can be grown with ease right in your onw home. The Amaryllis bulb originated in South Africa, and for many years they were predominantly predominantly grown there and then shipped throughout the world. With the warm climate, they were able to grow the best and largest bulbs. Over the last few years, this bulb has been extensively grown in Holland where an intense hybridizing program was set up, and just recently they have come up with the latest and the most beautiful colors in the Amaryllis bulbs. One of them is the Ludwig Holland Amaryllis, it comes in a variety of colors, from white to red, and several varieties have red background with white stripes through the flowers. Most Amaryllis bulbs are sold with the pot and saucer and the soil already in the box as a complete kit, excellent as a Christmas gift, since all that has to be done is planted and placed in the home for forcing into bloom. When you receive the bulb, plant them with % of the bulb above the soil. Use only pots that are two inches larger than the bulb, never put the bulb in a pot that is large, because all you will get is leaves. The temperature should oe around 60 to 70 degrees, with as much light as possible but not in direct sunlight. Water sparingly so that the roots have a chance to get startëd and the leaves start to develop and the flower bud is visible in the centre of the bulb. Then water once a week, or as needed, but do not over water. This is the case of most bulbs, or you can have a problem with the bulb rotting. Better still is to water them from the bottom in the saucer once a week until the bud is showing and twice a week after that. Amaryllis bulbs will last foi years, and can be saved after they flower. After the bloom is finished, put pot and all in a cool spot and only water about one a month, but very little. After the danger of frost is over in the spring they can be planted out in the garden. This can be done two ways. You can plant pot and all, or you can take the bulb out of the pot and plant them in the garden. In the fail when the weather starts to get cooler bring them indoors (potting those that are planted out), and then gradually reduce the supply of water at the roots, giving only enough to prevent the leaves from wilting. Some varieties will go completely dormant, losing all their leaves and some will retain some of their leaves. When the new leaves are starting to show, remove the old leaves and you are ready for another flowering. Another method is to completely lift the bulb out in the fall, remove all the soil, leaving as much of the roots intact as possible and cut off the leaves and place the bulb in a dry cool place for three months, to give the bulb a dormant period after which it can be planted again for the next flowering period. The soil that they like is friable so that the moisture can drain through, and adding a bit of manure will give it. the extra food it needs for proper flowering. There ' is ' little problem with insects on the Amaryllis except some Whitefly and they can be sprayed with an insecticidal soap for indoor plants. Yes, the Amaryllis is an excellent plant to bring color into your house and also will make a delightful project for the children, either in the classroom or at home. Until next week, happy indoor gardening. NEWTONVILLE 'Twas the night before Christmas \ And all through the town Was a mad rush of shoppers All wearing a frown.
