Bell Bantams Earn Narrow 4-3 Victory Over Oshawa Saturday, Dec. 1 was the day, 8:30 p.m. the time, Darlington Darlington Sports Centre the place as the Bell Major Bantam Toros played Oshawa Rotary. This was to be a rematch from 10 days earlier in Oshawa when the Bell Boys escaped with a well deserved 4 - 3 victory. This time as in the first game, outstanding goalkeeping goalkeeping at both ends was the order of the day. This time it was Burke Lush against Ian Cooper. The first crack in the Bell nets happened mid way through the second period as Oshawa struck for their only goal on a two on one break. The crack was soon fixed and no further effect was shown, however it looked like Oshawa was not going to bend until Brad Carnegie, using Eric Janssens as a decoy, took a pass from Gareth Stone and used the Oshawa defence as a screen and found the top corner open. This was probably probably the most satisfying game the boys have played as the defence stood solid all night" long, shared by Troy Neill, Brett Cole, Albert Big Canoe, Jeff Laird, Troy Harness and Mike Kane. The boys face a long hard week as they play Cobourg in Cobourg and Port Perry in Port Perry before they come home Saturday, Dec. 8 against Peterborough. Cowan Pontiac Eagles Finally Win on Home Ice By Sam Laskaris The Cowan Pontiac Jr. C. Eagles won their first game in over a month on home ice by defeating the Cobourg Cougars Sunday night, 7 - 4. Ironically, it was the Cougars that the Eagles had last beaten on home ice on Sunday, October 28th. Since then, the Eagles had suffered three losses and a tie in their own rink. In the game on Sunday, the Eagles scored at the 8:22 mark of the opening period after the Cougars had failed to clear the puck out of their own zone. Mark Hickey was the goal-getter with Brian Keenan and Dayrell Rowe picking up the assists. Only 19 seconds later, the identical trio teamed up again as Rowe scored his first goal of the evening. Bowmanville increased their lead to 3 - 0 when Randy Ellis beat Rob Turland in the Cougars' net at 15:47 with the lone assist credited to Jeff Dawson. In the second period, the Cougars got on the scoresheet at the 4:32 mark as Brian Bruce scored on the power- play from Jim Goody and Andy Hickerson. Cobourg narrowed Bowmanville's lead to 3 - 2 as John Thompson scored from Bruce at the 7:16 mark. Bowmanville regained a two-goal lead as Brian Heard took a defenceman to the ice which enabled Brad Clemens to score on a breakaway at 14:43. There exists an old saying saying which states that a team should never give up a goal in the final minute of a period as it usually gives the momentum momentum to the scoring team. Bowmanville Bowmanville did just this as they allowed Cobourg to score a goal with only 17 seconds left in the period. Thompson had the goal with the lone assist awarded to Hickerson. The old saying did not apply to this game as it was Bowmanville Bowmanville who came out and played inspired hockey in the early going of the concluding period. This determination paid off in the form of two quick goals which put the game out of reach. At the twenty-seven second mark, Keenan won a faceoff in the Cougars' end and Rowe trickled a shot through Tur- land's legs. Then at the 1:06 mark as the Eagles were once again applying pressure, Rowe scored his hat trick on a pass from Keenan. The Cougars scored their final goal of this match at 4:56 as Jeff Waldie beat Don Hayes in the Eagles' net with Les Bowness adding the assist. The scoring was closed by the Eagles' Andy Terry as he delivered a quick wrist shot inside the Cougars' blueline to beat Turland at 11:06. Due to suspensions and injuries, injuries, the Eagles played this game with only three regular defencemen. The defensive corps of Gord Rogers, Roger Hornsby, Andy Terry and forward Glenn German who Buckham Transporters Bounce Back from Slump Buckham Transport Minor A Bantams went into a tailspin Saturday, November 24, dropping dropping two in a row in lacklustre games that were mirror images of each other. The team arose early Saturday, travelling to Manvers to meet an Ajax AA team. Toros flew out of the box with winning on their minds, scoring early in the first by Troy Mutton (assists Dean Baumhauer and Stephen Smith) and holding on until 1:58 when the team fizzled and the floodgates opened. Ajax hit for one in the first and continued with five more in the second as they solidly took control. Finally, at 10:14 of the third, the returning Tony Van Hoof (Stephen Smith) found the mark and a few minutes later Nicky Dennis (Dean Baumhaumer and Neil Taylor) kept hopes up, but the usual third period surge did not appear. Toros were unable We're holding a Senior Citizens' Shopping Spree on Dec. 6-7-8 Please bring this advertisement with you! Men's Wear Ltd. 17 King St. East Bowmanville 623-5567 to capitalize on a multitude of power plays and went down to defeat 7 - 3. Toros went down for the count early Saturday evening as they repeated their performance performance against a Pickering AA team at Darlington. Once again they burned onto the ice in a fast-skating, heavy-hitting beginning that looked like revenge as Greg Goode mercilessly pounded pucks at a sharp goalie who deflected them consistently. Mike Ruthard responded with gyrations and stretches that frustrated a pressing Pickering Pickering offense. Finally at 2:45 of the first the bubble broke. Toro offence fizzled, the defence faded and Pickering moved in for the kill. Like a Roman phalanx they rode through the Toro defence, pumping in two unanswered goals late in the first and three more in the second. Despite flashes of brilliance by Stephen Smith (scoring two in the third assisted by Shane Armstrong and then Nicky Dennis), some sensational saves by Derek Biss and 13 attempts at the power play the frustrated Toros were outgunned, outgunned, out-hustled and out- scored by the avenging Pickering team, finally going down to defeat 7 - 2. ' What a difference a day makes! A new Toros team arrived at Darlington Sunday evening to play hockey against a Whitby AA team who seemed more prepared to play football, indulging in a large repertoire of dirty tricks: hooking, holding, slashing, roughing, charging, tripping, high-sticking, elbowing, elbowing, interfering, and hitting from behind. In total 15 penalties penalties were assigned to Whitby (the ones that were detected) by two referees who conducted conducted themselves well on the ice considering the enormity of the Whitby assault. Supported by some classless fans (cheering when a Toro player was injured) the Whitby team seemed bent on elimination tactics to win a hockey game, The Toros proved their class! Undaunted, once again they showed they will not be intimidated by goon tactics and stuck to the type of hockey they are capable of playing, The game ended in a tie (called due to time-lapse) but the Toros fans were proud of every member of their team who consistently outclassed Whitby. Scoring both goals: Neil Taylor (Shane Armstrong, Armstrong, Greg Healey). played back on the point for the evening should be congratulated congratulated for the effort they put forth. The Eagles were also without without the services of head coach Paul Robinson as he served the first of a two-game suspension suspension stemming from an incident which occurred in the previous Sunday's game against the Port Hope Panthers. Robinson was forced to watch the game from the press box while the Eagles' assistant coach Stew Roberts handled the team behind the bench. Look out for some familiar faces to appear in the Eagles' lineup in the not too distant future. Bowmanville's next game is this Saturday when the team boards the bus and travels to Little Britain to face the Merchants in a 7:30 p.m. start. On Nov. 17, Square Boys skated to a 4 -1 win as their goalie Paul Brooks came up with a big game, again stopping stopping the Nichols Shooters. Square Boys hustled from the opening faceoff as their captain Terry Kellel scored two minutes into the game. End to end action continued as Square Boys added their second goal scored by (way to go Joe), assisted by David Kichko. Early in the second period, Square Boys found themselves in a penalty shot situation. Nichols' Martin Vanderheydon skated down the ice, shooting for the left corner as Paul Brooks read the play perfectly by standing up and getting that left pad out, making the deflection. Weil done, Paul. Showing some fine moves also in the game for Square Boys was Shane Crombie as he scored their third goal. Nichols caught the Square Boys' defense off guard as they blasted a shot in for their only goal of the game. Last goal of the game was scored by Square Boys' Jim McGregor as he shot from centre ice area, catching the Nichols' goalie off guard. Shutout for Paul Brooks On Nov. 21 Square Boys travelled to Newcastle, returning returning home with a 3 - 0 win. This was one of their best games yet as all Square Boys put a darned good effort in it. It was a hard hitting game as Square Boys' defensemen did a good job in this area and in controlling the game and setting setting up plays. Square Boys' forwards had a tough time scoring that first goal against Paul Gallant who played a good game for Newcastle. Brian Vandam picked up an assist as he fed the puck up to captain Kellet who stick- handled and faked his way from behind the Newcastle net, reached out in front and swept the puck past their goalie. Good move Terry. In the second period Newcastle Newcastle had a few chances as Paul Brooks, playing a strong game, made the saves. At one time Newcastle had a clear shot on goal but Mr. Brooks with that quick glove made an excellent catch. Square Boys' forwards kept on skating and passing which resulted in their second goal, scored by Greg Raby assisted by Mark Burns and the (D.J.). Square Boys' last goal of the game was scored by Shane Crombie, with a good individual effort. Shane scrambled from the faceoff in his own end, out- skated his opponents and blasted one in the net to end the game 3-0. Way to hustle guys. Keep up the good work. Square Boy's had their hands full on Nov. 24 against Capri. Lots of action and a fast skating game as Capri were on the attack all the time. A good effort was made by both teams. The Square Boy club needed 100 percent effort from everyone everyone and they gave it. Numerous Numerous chances for Capri as Paul Brooks hung in there, stopping a lot of rubber. Mr. Brooks, doing what appeared to be a juggling act a couple of times, held on. Also playing a good game for Square Boy was centreman Shane Crombie as he was all over the ice and scored the opening goal assisted assisted by Brent Gibson. While one of Square Boys defensemen was checking in his corner a good thinking move by Jonathon Boyd as he covered his defenseman's position, blocked a shot, knocking the rebound out of his own end to kill the play. Well done Jonathon. The same action packed game continued in the second period with Square Boy notching notching that important second goal. With a splendid effort Square Boys' defenseman David Kichko burst from his own end, deked a Capri player to go in on goal and tucked one under the goalie. Well done son. A good second effort was made by both Brad Richard and Mark Burns with their backchecking. Another one of the key plays of the game was made by the (D.J.) when he skated all the way back from the Capri end to knock that puck off the stick of the Capri attacker bearing in on his goal tender. Great play (D.J.). The Capri team were just too strong to keep off the scoreboard as they poked in a goal to end the game 2 -1 for Square Boy. Everyone on the team worked hard for this game.
