Congratulations to a long time former resident, Mr. Ernie Nicholson, now Lindsay, who on Friday, Dec. 7 celebrated his 99th birthday with a party at the home of his son, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Nicholson. Mr. Nicholson was a former resident of Durham Complex. Mr. and Mrs. Lome Bowins were visitors to Peterborough last week, and called on Mrs. Cossor, in Springdale Nursing Home. Mrs. Cossor was a former Orono resident and lived in the south end of town. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kimmett and family, Lindsay, and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bailey and boys were Sunday evening dinner guests of Mrs. Dorothy Bailey and Mrs. E. Billings. Sympathy of the community to Mr. Ron Good and to Mrs. Rosie Osborne, Durham Complex, on the sad loss of a father and friend, in the passing passing of Mr. Harry Coulson, Newcastle. Mr. and Mrs. 0. Challice were Thursday evening dinner guests of his brother, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Challice. Mrs. Everett Stapleton and her brother Mr. Clarence Burley were last Thursday evening dinner guests of Mrs. Lena Clysdale, Newtonville. Recent visitors with their mother, Mrs. E. L. Gilbank were Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Gilbank and sons and Mr. and Mrs. David Gilbank, all from Pontypool; Mr. arid Mrs. Alan McAlpine and family, Belleville; Belleville; and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Webb and family, Markham. His many friends and neighbors wish a speedy get- well to Mr. Orville Chatterton, Chatterton, a patient in Bowmanville hospital. We are happy to report Mr. Everett Stapleton and Mr. Bob Chater are home from hospital. "BigBand Sounds" Attention all music lovers of the "Big Band Sounds" of the "40s and 50s" (take note Bethany McMahons). A very select crowd of music connoisseurs connoisseurs attended a!music-filled evening on Friday, Dec. 7 at Durham Srs. Complex hall, to hear 10 members of Clarke High School band and their teachers, present a lively concert. Those students taking part included Jeff Lowery, Arnold Mostert, Jeff Holmes, Nancy Tamblyn, Janne Tamblyn, Kim Hester, Maurice Nesbitt, Todd Pedwell and Derek Mereweather. Miss Peggy Matthys accompanied the students. An excellent program program - Black Magic, Just the Way You Are, Georgia on my Mind, Moonlight Serenade, In the Mood, and Birth of the Blues, just to name a few, entertained the music lovers present. A light lunch was served to the students following their presentation and Mr. Lawrence Staples voiced a note of appreciation on behalf of those present. So very often we hear of the young folks in negative situations, it warms our hearts to see, meet and hear this talented group, giving of their time to entertain entertain senior citizens. The above group played for the dance in Newcastle Town Hall, for the Lions Club on Saturday, Dec. Band received an appreciative welcome! Keep up the good work! Orono U.C.W. News Approximately 33 ladies of unit No. 1 and unit No. 2 met on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at noon to enjoy a very delectable pot-luck luncheon. Many varied and exotic dishes soon disappeared and desserts topped off the luncheon. The joint meeting was in charge of Thelma Gilbank, Jessie Watkins and Nellie Baird and they in turn presented a beautiful beautiful Christmas devotional, along with carols. A highlight of the meeting was the delightful delightful music and singing by Marion Milnes. Our Unit No. 1 leader gave out the notices and also needs for our Men's Hostel Christmas boxes. A goodly number of ladies met on Monday evening, Dec. 3 at the home of Clare and Margaret Gunter, to enjoy the beauty and Christmasy atmosphere. The tables were laden and beautifully decorated decorated to encourage everyone's appetite! Following the dinner carol singing and Clare graciously showed slides of The.Queen's Visit (close-ups too), hunting scenes, cottage country and many more. A delicious dinner was enjoyed by all present and devotions were given by Peggy Blascke, Yvonne Trafford and Betty Chatterton. St. Saviours Church News The flowers on the altar at St. Saviours were from the wedding of Edward Lenar- towicz and Christine Little, married Friday, Dec. 7. Church School Christmas presentation will be next Sunday, Dec. 16. A congregational congregational pot-luck lunch will follow at St. Saviours. Sunday, Dec. 23 - Holy Communion at all services. At 6:00 p.m. Archibshop Garns- worthy will be on CFTO TV (channel 9) with a film from Palestine on the Christmas sites. Human Rights week is being observed in many places by many people from Dec. 9 -16. Bishop Tutu of South Africa received his Nobel Peace Prize, Dec. 10. The members and families of Orono Hi C, Orono United Church enjoyed a spaghetti dinner at their Christmas party, last Friday evening, and music and dancing, later in the evening. Mrs. Jeanne Staples Kindergarten Kindergarten classes (two) morning and afternoon visited Orono United Church last Tuesday morning and afternoon. The leaders and Cubs of Orono 1st cub group enjoyed an evening at Cullen Gardens, on Monday evening. The scenery and beautiful lights were as always a real joy to see! Kirby News A good crowd was in attendance attendance at the White Gift service on Sunday morning. The Sunday school presented the program and Shana Hillis was narrator. Mrs. Marion Milnes rendered several very enjoyable solos, accompanied by her guitar. Sunday evening a large crowd enjoyed a pot-luck supper followed by a very exciting program, presented by members and Sunday school children. A mixed program program of skits, music and carols with Margaret Henderson Henderson at the organ. Bonnie Reid was the capable chairman and Rev. Fred Milnes entertained with his trombone. TYRONE NEWS The candle of Peace was lit on the second Sunday in Advent at Tyrone United Church and at Sunday School. A Chinese Christmas Carol, "Stars of Ice", which is said to be the first ever written (written in the mid 1930's) was sung by the choir, led and accompanied by Mrs. J. Vaneyk. The tune was one of simple beauty with oriental counterpoint. Nice to be able to follow the words, #413 in "The Hymn Book". A special Mission and Service offering was collected as a "Celebration of Our Roots"; collection . sans the celebration. ' Looking ahead, regular services and regular times for services on December 23rd. On December 24th a Christmas service will be held at Tyrone Church at 7:30 p.m. On January 6th Rev. R.C. Hopkins, Bowmanville, will assist in the sacrament of Holy Communion. Upon planning the U.C.W. Christmas dinner we find a shortage of folding chairs which have been borrowed and not returned. Get your Christmas baked goodies at the Tyrone Brownies Christmas Bake Sale at the Tyrone Mill on Saturday, Dec. 15th, from 10:00 a.m, to 1:00 p.m. Brownies' mothers are helping to raise money for Brownie group activities, such as camping, etc. The Christmas extravaganza euchre party attracted over 27 tables at the Community Centre on Friday, Dec. 7, 1984. On November 11, 1984, at 7:00 p.m. all coaches were requested to have their teams available at the Community Centre for team pictures, which are to be placed in the permanent display. Pictures are available to players at $3.50 each through coaches. In addition to being photographed the winning teams were presented with trophies, followed by a snack of coffee, apple cider and donuts. The winning teams were: Girls Novice Baseball coached by Jackie Forbes and Janice Cornish, Boys Atom Soccer coached by John Virtue, Boys Pee Wee Soccer coached by Steve Canonico, Boys Junior Soccer coached by Bernie Heming. On November 11, 1984, at 8:00 p.m. the Annual Tyrone Athletic Association meeting was held at the Community Centre with 12 people present. A draft of the new Constitution was discussed and amended. On December 9, 1984, the Tyrone Athletic Association met in the Community Centre at 7:00 p.m. with 10 members present. Family skating has begun at Darlington Sports Centre on Thursday nights 7 to 9 p.m. until the March School Break. There will be family skating during the Christmas New Year break. Memberships are available at $35.00 per family, $20.00 single or $2.00 per person at the door. Events being planned are the T.A.A. Dance and the annual Spirit Day. After weighing in at 1 lb., 7 ozs., one year ago, Darren has progressed by leaps and bounds. Knights Win Tournament Computer freaks can indulge indulge their passion in "Computer "Computer and Kids", a program starting at the Whitby Public Library on Tuesday, January 15th. Kids aged 4 to 14 in trie beginner and advanced classes can turn on to learning more about the computer in this winter program. On December 1st, 1984 the Oshawa Knights travelled to Havelock for the Annual Tournament" and emerged "A" Champions. In the first game against Toronto a 3 - 0 win started the team off on the right foot. Shutout to Frank Bowen and goals scored by Geordy Bowen, Rob "Tiger" Worden and Scott Down. In the second game against Parry Sound Oshawa emerged 4 - 2 winners again another strong performance by Frank Bowen between the pipes. Goal scorers were Willy McGarvey, Hugh Francis two goals, and Leonard White. In the Championship game against a tough Peterborough squad Oshawa narrowly won by a 2 -1 score. Again Frank Bowen made numerous saves to turn the Peterborough scoring scoring attempts away. Scoring were Leonard White and Rob "Tiger" Worden.
