Recent reports of rabies attacks in the area indicate that the disease is no less threatening today than it was decades ago and, contrary contrary to popular belief, suburban, suburban, city, and rural areas are affected equally. This often happens to unsuspecting unsuspecting animal-lovers who fail to realize that the symptoms of rabies usually don't appear until 3 to 6 weeks after a cat or dog has been bitten. And, in the dog, they may not develop for up to 6 months, depending on the severity of the bite or wounds and their distance from the brain. "The best way to prevent this sort of thing from happening happening is not to handle wildlife or stray animals at all," said District Veterinarian Veterinarian Dr. Shearer. Dr. Shearer went on to explain explain that allowing your own pet to run loose about the neighbourhood poses an equally high risk for the animal and for your family. There are two forms of rabies: Furious Rabies and Dumb Rabies. In dogs, dumb rabies is more common. common. Cats nearly always suffer suffer from the furious form. In the dog, the first symptom noticed is usually a change in its disposition. A normally friendly dog may become shy, hide in dark places, resent attention attention and snap when bothered. And, a normally shy or snarly dog may become become unusually friendly. During this stage a dog's voice becomes hoarse and its appetite diminishes. In the second stage the dog may become nervous and excitable, and may travel several miles trotting along with its head and tail down, salivating and biting anything and everything it meets. In the third stage the dog staggers and eventually becomes paralyzed. In the cat the symptoms are much the same as in the dog. DOWNTOWN OSHAWA 571-3329 The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food in conjunction with the Ontario Youth Corps is offering an employment program which provides on-the-job training for youth and extra help for farmers. Eligible youth must be 15 - 24 years of age, have grade 11 education or less, and be unemployed for at least 12 weeks. The youths will be placed on farms with the idea that they will be willing to do farm tasks such as cleaning barns, feeding livestock, keeping records, operating machinery and general maintenance. Eligible farmers must be farming a commercial commercial operation and interested interested in training a youth during the winter months. Horticultural and agricultural businesses are also included. The youth receives as wages, $4.00 per hour based on a 40-hour work week. The Host Farmer contributes $2.00 per hour toward the youth's wages. Workers' Compensation and Unemployment Unemployment Insurance are the responsibility of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The employment period is for 12 - 19 weeks beginning November 12, 1984 and ending March 22, 1985. The application deadline has been extended to December 14,1984. If you suspect an animal of having rabies, whether it's in the early or late stages of development, notify the Health of Animals Animals Branch of the Canada Department of Agriculture as quickly as possible. If you are unable to contact their office, notify your local veterinarian or police.
