Peterborough scored the only goal in the second and took in 2 -1 lead. Both teams had their chances throughout the game and displayed good passing, fore checking and shooting. With 1:21 left in the game, the visiting team scored the final goal past Bowmanville goalie Jamie "Caboose" Doyle, winning the game 3 -1. Saturday evening, the team travelled to Orono and played against the Orono Atom team. The home team took a 1 - 0 lead in the first period of Scott McAllister with assist to Ryan Rock. Bowmanville Bowmanville goaltending duties were shared by Brent "Snapper" Knapp and Jamie Doyle, Orono winning the contest 4-0. The hard luck players for the day seemed to be the line of Matthew Belfour, Steve de Blois and Tracy Lemke, who seemed to be involved in some nice playmaking but unable to capitalize on some opportunities, opportunities, either robbed by the opposition goalie or their defense. Checker Variety's next game is this Thursday, 13 Dec. 6:00 p.m. in Pickering and Saturday 15 Dec. against Markham at Darlington Arena, Hampton. URBD INTRODUCES Mow to Qlt/iUimaA. Cowan Eagles Add Two More Wins By Sam Laskaris The Bowmanville Cowan Pontiac Eagles extended their modest undefeated streak to five games with a pair of victories this past week. On Saturday, the Eagles travelled to Little Britain to face the Merchants Merchants and came away with a 6 - 3 victory. Then at home on Sunday, Bowma'nville beat the visiting Uxbridge Bruins 7 - 2 to move within one point of first place in the league standings. In Saturday's game defenceman defenceman Roger Hornsby opened the scoring for the Eagles as he took a shot from the point which was initially initially stopped by the Merchants' Merchants' netminder, Ron Stewart. The puck however took a crazy bounce off Stewart's pads and bounced over him into the net. This goal which was a powerplay marker came at the 12:50 mark of the opening period and Gord Rogers and Brad Clemens contributed the assists on the play. Less than three minutes later, the Merchants got on the score sheet. After receiving receiving a pass from Rob Louttit, Gord Thomson evaded the Bowmanville defencemen at the blueline and went in alone on goalie George Kenneth Thomson made no mistake on this breakaway and thus gave his Merchants a 1 -1 tie with the Eagles after the initial stanza. In the second period, a rash of penalties were taken by both squads; It seemed that the Merchants were trying to intimidate the Eagles, however this backfired on them. 1 The Eagle players for the most part were able to keep their composure and this resulted resulted in Bowmanville en- LONG SAULT CONSERVATION AREA MASTER PLAN CINTflAL LAKE ONTARIO CONSERVATION AUTHORITY OCTOBER 1984 The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority Authority will be making a presentation of its Long Sault Conservation Area masterplan in the Town of Newcastle Council Chambers, 132 Church Street, Bowmanville, Court Room 2 at 9:30 a.m. Monday, December 17th, 1984. Bowmanville took a 2 -1 lead when Brian Heard scored into an empty net after picking up a rebound off Scott Heard's shot. This goal was scored at 3:20 with Chris Dreossi picking up the other assist. Once again it took the Merchants less than'. three minutes to tie theigame. On the powerplay Loiititt scored at the 6:15 mark. , The Eagles regained their lead at the 9:02 mark as Andy Terry moved the puck ahead to Dayrell Rowe who moved in and drilled a shot between Stewart's legs. Then at the 10:59 mark as Bowmanville was enjoying a two-man powerplay Mark Hickey found the top right- hand corner of the Merchant's Merchant's net unoccupied and temporarily placed the puck there with a quick shot. Rowe and Eagles' captain captain Brian Keenan were awarded with assists on the play. At 15:27, Bowmanville took a 5 - 2 lead as Hickey gave Rowe a perfect drop pass inside the Merchants' blueline. Rowe released a quick wrist shot which gave the Eagles their third powerplay powerplay goal of the period. With just over a minute to play in the period the Merchants Merchants scored a short- handed goal as Paul Young connected on his own rebound. rebound. The third period featured only one goal. It was Rowe's hat trick goal at the 10:42 mark which put some icing on the cake for the Eagles. Once again Hickey and Keenan added to their point totals by providing the assists. It was a relatively quiet night for the Eagles' net- minder Kennett who faced only nineteen shots, compared compared to his counterpart Stewart who saw a total of forty-four Eagle shots directed directed his way. This game also featured the successful broadcasting debut of Pierre St. Amand. St. Amand is an Eagles' defenceman defenceman who is still out of action with an injured shoulder. In Sunday's game, Dreossi opened the scoring for Bowmanville at the 6:42 mark of the first period with Scott Heard and Brian Heard adding the assists. The Bruins however tied the game at 8:20 when the Eagles gave the puck up in their own zone and Kevin Smith beat Kennett. Just over a minute later the Eagles restored their lead as Dreossi deflected a shot which Hornsby had let go from the point. Scott Heard added the other assist. assist. At 18:36 the Eagles took a 3 -1 lead as Rowe became the team's first twenty goal- scorer this year on a play aided by Hickey and Keenan. With only twenty- four seconds left in the period the Bruins scored what turned out to be their final goal as Paul MacEwen was credited with the goal which was set up by Smith and Henry Van Kessel. The score remained 3 - 2 in favor of the Eagles until the 5:52 mark of the third period. It was at this point that Hornsby drilled a shot from the point which beat Brian Tarleton in the Bruins' net. Rowe and Hickey Hickey picked up their second points of the evening by adding adding the assists. Less than a minute later the Eagles' Glenn German crossed centre ice and lofted a harmless shot towards the Bruins' net. The puck however however bounced right in front of Tarleton and somehow eluded the netminder into the net. At the 13:40 mark the Eagles went ahead 6 - 2 as Brian Heard scored from German. Then the Eagles got their final goal of the game as the Heard brothers teamed up on the powerplay powerplay at 17:18 with. Scott getting credit for the goal. The Eagles' next game is tomorrow night when the team travels to Port Hope to face the Panthers in what will be a battle for first place in the league standings. standings. Coach: Chuck Wright and Winn Collier who did an excellent job behind the bench in keeping keeping everyone on their toes. Next game Sunday, December 16 in Newcastle against Whitby Marigold at 11 a.m. Non-Contact Hockey Apparently, all the talk about penalties has had some effect, since they were greatly reduced on the weekend, only 24 compared to last week's 55. Barrett Electric and San Marino's faced off in the first game Saturday which resulted in a 3 to 2 score, in favour of Barrett. San Marino's R. Hooper opened the scoring mid-way through the first on a goal from R. McLean and B. Munn. Barrett came back three minutes later to score their first of three for the period. J. Lemke, Barrett, started the scoring, and were closely followed followed by R. Drew, with a single, before he scored his second of the period and the final marker for Barrett in the game. The second period saw good, fast hockey with both goal tenders turning back all shots, and only two minors assessed. A power play goal by B. Hazelton put San Marino's within striking distance late in the third, but they were unable to crack the goaltending of Barrett's R. Stainton, who turned back 23 shots with his counterpart in the other end stopping 24. The second game saw Twin Brand Orchards and Courtice Auto Wreckers square off in what proved to be a clean fast contest; the penalty box doors opened only twice. Twin Brand's big. ,apple D. "Digger" Rickard scored in each period, a hat trick, to lead his team in a 3 to 1 defeat of Courtice. Courtice's goal came late in the third as F. Sawyer finally beat (Beasties) M. Kersten on a power play, to break his shutout. It was a case of too , little too late for Courtice, as Twin Brand Orchards held on to win with shots on goal 24 to 21 in their favour. Early Sunday morning saw Shopper's a little short on bench strength but certainly not lacking in desire as they met the Flying Dutchman. O.J. must have been off his orange juice as it was not until a power play goal by A. Warren, late in the second period, that the Dutchman took the lead away from Shopper's. Being behind 3 to 0 at one point, the Dutchman came back with five goals, interrupted interrupted by only one from Shopper's Shopper's W. Smith. M. St. Thomas and D. Moriarity had their first goals of the season, for the Dutchman's Dutchman's effort, in their 6 to 5 defeat of Shoppers. Shots on goal were recorded at 30 to 20 for Shopper's. The Dutchman, besides having the edge in scoring, also had the edge in penalties, taking seven of the 10 assessed. The everthreatening Toby's Pub had Clinic Pharmacy worried as they scored twice in the last minute of play to move within one goal of Clinic in Sunday's second game. The final score, Clinic 6 and Toby's 5, reflected the kind of fast, close checking game that it really was. Seven minors were assessed with Clinic taking five, and shots on goal were booked at Toby's 32, Clinic 29. A pair of goals were credited credited to Toby's P. Guymer as well as Clinic's L. Jay and P. Hoy. Late in the second period, scoring his first goal of the season in only his second game, T. "Piggy" Hogg gave Clinic the edge in scoring, going into the third. Despite scoring two quick goals in the last minute and having a power play, Toby's was unable to get that all important goal. YOU NOW.
