In a random survey of local citizens taken January 2nd, the priorities for changes in the new year included included butting the smokes and refraining from those extra portions at dinner time. Of course many of those interviewed decided to play it safe and resolved not to make any commitments for 1985, avoiding the high risk of reneging later on in the year. Compiled by: Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, 234 King Street East, Bowmanville, Ontario L1C 1P5. or customer Ontario Hydro on January 15th Ontario Hydro conducted the first of its 1985 voltage reduction tests on Tuesday, January 15. Between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., and again, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, voltage on the Ontario electrical grid was reduced by five per cent. For most customers, the effect of these two brief reductions was imperceptible. But it will be significant for Hydro. The data collected on the over-all load reduction resulting from a system voltage reduction of five per cent will help Hydro locate and resolve potential operating problems. Testing the power distribution grid helps ensure that in the event of a generation emergency -- such as the breakdown of a large generating unit -- there will be no power interruptions. A five per cent voltage reduction, distributed over the Hydro system, is equivalent to more than 500,000 kilowatts. That is the output of a single Pickering reactor and it is enough to meet the electricity needs of more than 180,000 homes. Hydro conducts voltage reduction tests every January and July.
