Port Hope 4 Toros 5 In the recent Young Canada Day Tournament, the Toros had to battle back from a 4 -1 deficit to be victorious. Bowmanville were short a couple of players because of the holidays and the coaches had to adjust the defensive lines. The adjustment took time and soon the Toros were behind 3-0. Port Hope scored on a power play and although this was their last goal they appeared to have the game completely under control. Jeff Rohr and Phillip Green combined to get a power play goal and the Toros started to out-skate the opposition. Gilbert Holder scored with help from Chris Brown and Matthew Doughty and close to the end of regulation regulation time Jeremy Laird scored with help from Ronnie Luxton, the result of good work along the boards. With a tie game, overtime was necessary and it was played with both goaltenders seated on the bench. Overtime lasted 24 seconds. Port Hope had one shot from inside the blue line (one of the rules is that for a goal to count the shot must be from inside the blue line) and then Jeff Rohr using his great speed scored the winner. A very exciting end to a game that appeared to be lost in the first 15 minutes. Canadian Tire Minor Midgets Bowmanville's Minor Midgets defeated the L.N.H.L. After the dust had cleared in Saturday's first game the final score was 6 to 4 as the Flying Dutchman defeated San Marino's. During the first period seven minor penalties and one major were assessed by the referees, with no power play goals scored. W. Alder notched a hat trick for San Marino's and T. Fennell had a pair in favour of the Dutchman. San Marino's had two goals called back, one which was kicked in, but the other was questionable and if counted, could possibly have changed the course of the game. E. Strand was back on skates for this contest, but looked just a touch rusty. Still, he managed to set up two goals, one on a powerplay in the second. Shots on goal were 24 to 22 in favour of the Dutchman and penalties were recorded at six apiece. In Saturday's second match, Courtice Auto Wreckers again moved ahead of Toby's Pub in their see-saw battle for 3rd place, in the Oliver Division. Playing an aggressive game, taking eight out of 10 minor penalties, Courtice took the lead 2 to 1 at the end of the first, and never looked back. M. Clouthier brought Toby's close with the only goal of the second period, which tied things up. In the third, goals by J. Partner, P. Henderson, and one on a fancy bank shot (with the goalie out) by L. Bielawski kept Courtice ahead. G. Powell, for Toby's, had their only marker late in the period. However, D. Forrester managed to block 18 of Toby's shots while L. Lamanque handled 28 from Courtice. Final score 5 to 3 for Courtice. Barrett Electric led in all catagories at the final buzzer in Sunday's 7:00 a.m. game, by defeating Shopper's Drug Mart 7 to 3, outshooting them 30 to 26 and taking five of the six minor penalties. A three-goal effort by Barrett's J. Stainlon and excellent goaltending by R. Stainlon paved the way for Barrett's victory. The closest Shopper's got was in the second, when the only goal of the period put them within one of Barrett. A four-goal onslaught onslaught by Barrett in the third put the game out of reach. This win moved Barrett Electric into second place in thé Burke Division, two points ahead of Shopper's and only four behind the Dutchman, with only four games remaining remaining in the schedule. Both goaltenders had an excellent game as Clinic Pharmacy and Twin Brand Orchards squared off in Sunday's second game. Facing 21 shots each, M. Willoughby, Clinic, and M. Kerstens for Twin Brand were very hot. Early in the third, a "tip in" by B. Shantz on a power play completely fooled Clinic's net- minder and tied the game at two apiece. Goals by P. Bee- croft and T. Graham rounded out the Beasties' scoring and Clinic's L. Jay had two, J. Allen, B. Janitsch and G. Hillis scoring singles. The score at game end was 5 to 3 in favour of Clinic with the Beasties taking five of the six minor penalties assessed. A bit of trivia trash - with four games remaining in the schedule, only 17 players not counting goaltenders, have not scored in our league. Dennis Pizza Novice Toros Tie Game The Novice Toros travelled to East GwillembUry to participate participate in their first tournament tournament of the year. The first game was played against Keswick, a well matched team, finishing the game with a 2 - 2 draw. Keswick's Keith Genidle scored the first goal, two minutes into the first period. They held each other off until the last four minutes of the third period, when Jeff Murphy scored for the Toros. Assists go to Andrew Ferguson and Chad Veinot. Keswick's Derek Garrard came right back with another goal, assists to Brian Ladner and Jeremy Payne. Bowmanville Bowmanville Toros pulled their goalie with 1:42 remaining in the game. Ryan Robinson scored for the Toros, with assists going to Gary Adams and Jeff Murphy. After a seven hour wait, the boys played their second game, against East Gwillem- bury. The Toros were ready for this 2 -1 win. The first goal was scored by Jeff Murphy and the second goal by Ryan Robinson. Bowmanville and Cambridge Cambridge met on Sunday for Toros last game. The final score was 3-0. Thanks to Kevin Martin who took a penalty at the end, to save a goal, he had faith in our goal- tender, Byron Harnum who saved a penalty shot. PEACOCK LUMBER LTD.
