Kool Bantams Tie Square Boy Pizza Saturday, January 12 had Kool Enterprises take on Square Boy in what would prove to be a very entertaining entertaining match. In the first period, Kool came out flying and seemed to catch Square Boy napping. Todd DeGooyer sent a hard drive home during the very first shift with assists awarded awarded to Sean Powers and Kelly Floyd. This goal set the tempo for the whole game as Square Boy was forced to play "catchup" "catchup" hockey. The rest of the first period saw the play go from end to end with many missed opportunities on both sides. It was only late in the period when Square Boy finally scored to even the game. The second period was as fast and as well played as the first without any scoring until the 6:51 mark. Then Jason Ryan, on an excellent pass from Paul Smethurst, pulled the Square Boy goalie out and slid the puck underneath him to give Kool the lead again. The second assist went to Tony Dyer. This lead was short-lived as Square Boy again managed to tie the game late in the period on a scramble in front of the Kool goal. The third period was to remain scoreless with both teams having several scoring chances go for naught and when they managed to hit the mark the goalies were equal to the task. The final score was a two all tie. It is good to see the latent talents of the Kool boys finally starting to show. It looks as if they are going to be a team to be reckoned with as the second half of the season winds down. Bantam 2's Defeat Uxbridge Bantams In this week's regular league play, the Fifth Wheel Bantams journeyed to Uxbridge Uxbridge on Sunday and defeated defeated the home team 4-1. The Toros took to the ice in a determined manner and soon got on the scoresheet when Tim Smith knocked in a pass from Brad Rushak at the 17 second mark of the first period. This first period belonged to the Bowmanville team as they added three more unanswered goals. The Toros passed effectively effectively throughout the game. This kept the Uxbridge team off guard and allowed Bowmanville Bowmanville to notch their second goal when Paul Hindman scored after taking a pass from Mark Van Leeuwen. Tim Smith who played an excellent game, added his second and third goals of the contest late in the first period. His second marker was the result of a three way passing play with Todd Dorion and Scott Brunt. Todd got his second assist of the game when he passed to Brad Rushak who in turn directed the puck to Tim for his third goal. This was also Brad's second assist. All the points by all the individuals were well earned. The forward lines of Todd .Dorion - Tim. Smith - Brad Rushak and Paul Hindman Hindman - David Smith - Mark Van Leeuwen moved the puck well leading to the fine offensive game by the Toros. Not to be outdone by the offence, the defensive pairings of Adam Ulrich and Chad Dorion, Scott Munro and Greg Gardner, and Paul Crago and Scott Brunt had a very good game as well. They offered strong support to Scott Hanthorn who played an excellent game in goal. Scott made many fine saves and appeared to be on his way to a well-deserved shut-out until Uxbridge scored late in the third period. In other games played during the week, the Fifth Wheel team held Orono to 4 - all tie in an exhibition game played Tuesday night at the Orono arena. The Bowmanville Bowmanville goals were scored by Scott Brunt, Todd Dorion, Mark Van Leeuwen and Tim Smith. Assists went to Greg Gardner, Scott Brunt, Aaron Ulrich, Scott Munro and Brad Rushak. To complete the week's action the Toros took part in a tournament in Keene on Saturday where they ran into a very good Pickering team and were defeated 5 - 0. They also lost their second game 7 - 3 to Warsaw. It appears as if they left their best game for their Sunday effort in Uxbridge. Buckham Transport Play with Spirit On January 8 Buckham Transport Minor Bantams met their Whitby counterparts in a return match at Brooklin - the previous game had resulted resulted in a tie after Whitby had 'engaged in blatant goon tactics. From the opening faceoff it became clear that Whitby was out for revenge as the Toro team was tied into knots by their pressing attack for several minutes with first blood drawn at 12:30. Despite the strict calls of the officials, Whitby chose to continue their abusive form of play, drawing five penalties in the first, six in the second and eight in the third, giving Toros a massive number of power plays. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, they were only able to capitalize on a few. Tim Powers lead the first assault, rolling down the left wing behind the net and directing directing the puck across the goalmouth goalmouth to Tony Van Hoof who quickly pumped it in (assist also to Neil Taylor). A few minutes later Tony Van Hoof reversed the play to Tim Powers who scooped it in past a surprised goalie (assist also to' Neil Taylor) ending the period in a 2 - 2 tie. In the second Whitby scprcd three times answered only once by Nicky Dennis (Doug Lever, Troy Mutton) in a fine three on two passing play. Both teams played the third short-handed most of the time and Bowmanville managed only one, Greg Goode (Doug Lever, Nicky Dennis) ending the match 7 - 4 for Whitby. Woolwich Tournament On January 12th, Buckham took part in the Woolwich Tournament splitting a pair. In the first a Tillsonburg team went down to defeat 4 - 2 in a fast-paced exciting game that showed the Toros at their best with all lines hustling. Mike Ruthard was brilliant in net, deflecting pucks from all directions and Nicky Dennis was outstanding in his accelerating attacks scoring a hat trick, Scoring: Nicky Dennis (unassisted); Nicky Dennis (Greg Goode, Troy Mutton); Stephen Smith (Greg Healey, John-Paul Duczmalewski) ; Nicky Dennis (unassisted). Later that evening, Toros met Flamboro hut got off to a • slow start with Flamboro scoring 35 seconds into the match, The first period ended 3 - 0 but Toros came out for the kill in the second, scoring two in a row: Nicky Dennis (Troy Mutton, Doug Lever) ; Shane Armstrong (Stephen Smith, Greg Healey) and hopes were high that the club was back in line when three unanswered Flamboro goals put the match out of reach. Flamboro scored once again in the third answered answered by Shane Armstrong (Greg Healey, Stephen Smith) and Stephen Smith (Greg Goode, Shane Armstrong) ending the match 7 - 4. Impressive was the enthusiastic enthusiastic team spirit demonstrated by the Toros in victory and defeat. A class act! Girls Defeat Keene III The Newcastle Jr. Girls have resumed play after a long Christmas break from hockey. The girls certainly didn't show any signs of lethargy from the long absence as they defeated Keene III 6 -1 on Saturday. Shari Me Coll opened the scoring for Newcastle early in Hie first period, assisted by Tara Sinclair. Suzanne Brooks and Tara Sinclair made some nice passes to get the puck back to Shari McColl at the point for goal number two. The second period saw the end of one hat trick and the beginning of another as Shari McColl scored her third goal of the gaine assisted by Tanya Brady while Traci Mercer put home her first goal of the game, assisted by Tara Sinclair and Jeanette Collin- son. Both third period goals were scored by Traci Mercer, assisted by Tara Sinclair and Suzanne Brooks with Jeanette Collinson drawing the assist on goal number six.
