Such were exclamations of Toro fans at the end of the Pickering tournament January 25 and 26 • who saw our minor bantams pitted against top teams from Ajax and Pickering. Defeat Ajax 4-2 During the match against Ajax Friday evening, Toros demonstrated their playoff readiness as they skated, passed, checked and hustled their way to a 4-2 victory. Despite the missing John-Paul Duczmalewski and Tim Partridge the redistributed lines all showed the type of Toro pizzaz that leaves parents and fans feeling proud. Scoring: Doug Lever (Neil Taylor, Nicky Dennis) ; Tim Powers (Nicky Dennis); Stephen Smith (Tim Powers, Jim Pithie) ; Jim Pithie (Doug Lever, Stephen Smith). Toros took no penalties. Congratulations to Derek Biss who was outstanding in net Bell Rings Peterboro Sat., Jan. 10, 1985 saw the Bell Bantams double the score on Peterborough 8-4. The game started off with Bowmanville dominating the first period but also saw Peterborough ahead by a lopsided score of 3-0. Playing hard and steady, the Bell boys finally opened the gates 1:35 into the second period, and the flood began. Before Peterborough could turn off the flow, six goals had gone in for the Bell boys. In the third period, Bowmanville was able to add two insurance goals to end the game 8-4 winners. Scoring for Bowmanville was Guy Freeman from Kevin Flintoff and Mark Tripp, Troy Harness from Rob Real and Craig de Blois, Mark Tripp from Gareth Stone and Brad Carnegie, Britt Cole from Mark Tripp and Brad Carnegie, Mark Tripp from Brad Carnegie and Gareth Stone, Mark Tripp, his hat trick from Mike Kane and Brad Carnegie, Kevin Flintoff from Jeff Laird and Troy Harness, Mark Tripp with his fourth from Brad Carnegie. The boys' next game is Friday, February 1 in Peterborough against this same squad, and then Saturday in Oshawa before returning home. Oldtimers Break Slump By Bob Sheridan Tuesday night, January 22nd, we dropped our fourth game in a row to Marigold Ford by one goal, 4-3. George Sainsbury centred a line with Siegi Rohr and Joe Balson and this terrific trio hit for all three Bowmanville goals, Siegi with two and Joe with one, Grant Wright played a fine game in the Bowmanville goal. Grant again pul in a sterling performance as we finally won a game, defeating Oshawa Sudsers 4 - 3. Bob Sheridan opened the scoring from Grant Flintoff and Bob Deblois. Bob Marjerrison then scored from Ron Rushak and David Green. Sudsers tied the score and Bob Deblois got the tiebreaker on a lead pass from Grant Flintoff. Bob raced in and scored, putting a beautiful shift on the Oshawa.goaltcn- der. Sudsers again tied the score after putting on persistent persistent pressure for the first ten minutes of the third period. Bob Marjerrison scored the go ahead goal from Rushak and Green. Our defense corps of Roger Shingler, Hugh German, Dan Girardi, Bob Skene and Bob Ilellam were excellent in this game. Warren Townslcy had a new pair of Coopcroo skates and still played well. Hooked on Video Starts Playoffs with a Victory Bowmanville 4- Pelerbonmgli I The Toro Pee Wees won their playoff game against a Peterborough team on Saturday, 19th, at the Darlington Arena with some splendid team play. The team anchored by Geoff Smith in goal and supported by a sound defence Is playing very aggressive hockey which is keeping the opposition off balance. The first period was scoreless but involved fast end to end action and it was even hockey. Early In the second period Peterborough was penalized and found themselves two men short, Jeff Rohr, Jeremy Laird and ,lelf Acheson worked together to put the Toros ahead during this advantage however, this did not discourage. Peter borough as they put on a lot of pressure forcing the Toros to make a bad clearing play from which they scored. What may have discouraged Peterborough Peterborough was Jeff Rohrs short handed goal minutes later. The third goal was set up by Phillip Green and Jeff, Jeff passed to Phillip who passed it back, Jeff shot, and Jeremy put in the ensuing rebound, Late in the third period, Peleborough were once again two men short when Marc Peirce took a slap shot from outside the blue line and beat the goal keeper to complete the scoring, It was a good team effort with Ryan Putnam playing an extremely solid game fore-checking continuously, It is a long time since Ryan was on the Ice for a goal against Ills team, and Jim Pithie who won a well-deserved M.V.P. award. Lose in Overtime The battle continued on Saturday against Pickering in a barn-burner that threatened to out-match Friday's game as both teams fought end-to- end creating a cliff-hanger that had the crowd on their feet consistently. Stephen Smith (Shane Armstrong, Greg Healey) finally put the Toros on the scoreboard at 6:24 of the third and indications were for a Toro victory. However, at 2:45 Pickering retaliated forcing the match into overtime. Unfortunately Pickering sounded the death knell at 1:23 and :31 to end the match 3-1. Congratulations to Mike Ruthard for his outstanding performance in goal and to Greg Goode for receiving the M.V.P. award. Ajax Gets Revenge Saturday night, only a few hours later, Toros travelled to Darlington toi re-play Ajax. Buckham played well for the first two periods, holding the scoreboard at a 2-2 tie. However, the two energy- exhausting games of the weekend took their toll as Ajax was able to put three unanswered goals past the weary defense. Scoring: Nicky Dennis (Greg Healey) ; Stephen Smith (Greg Healey, Shane Armstrong). Belleville Wins 8-5 Other action last week saw Toros go head-to-head with an impressive Belleville club on January 22 in a fast-paced, high-scoring game that went to Belleville 8-5 but for a little luck could have easily gone to Buckham. Scoring: Shane Armstrong (Greg Healey, Neil Taylor); Stephen Smith,(Neil Taylor, Troy Mutton); Tim Partridge (Nicky Dennis, Dean Baumhauer) ; Tony Van Hoof (Neil Taylor) ; Jim Pithie (Tim Powers). Dennis Pizzeria only recently became sponsors of the team. Royalview in First Place Delegates to the annual meeting of the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association adopted a format where the seniors series will be split into two divisions, one consisting of A and B teams and the other consisting of C and D teams. The first place team in the top division at a certain date will represent the league in Ontario Baseball Association playoffs in the A series while the second place team will be the B representative. The top club in the second division will represent the league in C competition, with the second place team moving into D playoffs. Only exception to this would be if a centre is playing host to an Ontario championship tournament. The regular season will run until August 20, with League playoffs to follow. The senior clubs will have their own executive, under the guidance of an OBA appointed commissioner. The league will also do away with the two and a half hour curfew for games but will retain the league's mercy rule. Rod Fillier of Whitby was elected president of the association with Jack Atkinson of Peterborough first vice-president, Ron Jay of Cobourg second vice- president, Liz Basinger of Cobourg third vice-president. Executive members are John Graham and Randy Pickle of Whitby, Sam Dempster of Bowmanville and Hugh Jones of Ajax and Vi Christopher of Belleville secretary treasurer - registrar. Among rules to take effect this summer is one that stipulates tyke and peewee batters must wear helmet chin straps and will no longer be allowed to wear metal cleats. Catchers in all divisions must wear chin protectors. The re-entry rule has been extended to bantam for OBA play. The Senior league has adopted the designated hitter rule as enforced in the American League. Previously the designated hitter could be used for any player. Now he must be used for the pitcher only. The Heritage House Pee Wee Toros played a Home and Home series with Uxbridge last week hoping to advance in the All-Ontario play-downs. They travelled to Uxbridge on Monday, January 21, to face a very strong Uxbridge club. After a lacklustre performance performance in the first two periods, the Bowmanville squad played played much better in the third but it was a case of too little - too late as they were beaten 10 - 4. Todd Banks led the Bowmanville Bowmanville attack with two goals and an assist. Other scorers were Brendan Donohue and Shawn McFadyen. Single assists went to Martin D'Entremont and Chris Forsey. Three Stars were No. 1 Brendan Donohue, No. 2 Bryan James and No. 3 Todd Banks. In the return match on Friday, January 25, at the Darlington Sport Centre, the local lads were again outska- ted, outshot and outscored in losing by a 10 -1 score. Scoring the lone Bowman- ville marker was Brendan Donohue on a pretty three- way passing play, with assists going to Dave Smith and Todd Banks. Three Star honours went to Brendan Donohue, Tom White and Todd Banks. With only a single game remaining against Port Perry it appears certain that the Toros will not advance from this region to further play-off competition. It should be noted, however, that this particular Toro team was made up of 10 minor age players, four of whom had no previous, All-Star experience and five major age players. They were very competitive during the season in league play as their seven victories and two ties in 17 games would indicate. The O.M.H.A., in their wisdom, wisdom, decided that we should play teams from smaller communities that were made up of all major age players in the playoffs. Obviously, this idea did not work. Hopefully, future so-called "B" teams will not be forced to participate participate in games where they are completely over-matched. This season is far from over, however, as the team is entered entered in three tournaments, including a trip to Buffalo, N.Y. They will also play a series of exhibition games as the learning experience continues continues for many of these players who will form the nucleus of some strong Toros teams in the future.
