They were the victims of shutout shutout goaltending in the first game and then administered their own shutout in the second match. On Monday, January 21, the squad played against Oshawa - Lake Vista at the Newcastle Arena. The game went scoreless scoreless until the final minutes when a Lake Vista forward slid one in for the game's only goal. This was an unfortunate turn of events for the Bowmanville Bowmanville crew as they had definitely outplayed their opponents throughout the match. The Checkers forwards forwards provided a lot of pressure pressure in the Oshawa zone but their goaltender was equal to the task. He "stole" several opportunities away from the Checkers crew. The squad worked hard in this 1 - 0 defeat but Lady Luck was working the scoreboard for the opposition. opposition. On Saturday, January 26, a Pee Wee team from Port Hope provided the opposition for the Checkers crew. The Port Hope boys were a chippy bunch and their lack of discipline cost them the game. The home side cashed in on three power play situations for the game's only scores. In the first period Kent Vanderheyden opened the scoring on a set up from Richard MacCheyne. In the second period, winger Adam Kiff dug the puck out of the corner and relayed it to Jeremy Snowden in front. Jeremy put it away on his own rebound. In the final frame it was Kent's turn to set up Richard for the last goal in the 3 - 0 win. In both of these games, the goaltending and the defensive corps of the Checkers crew rose to the forefront. Blue- liners Dana Barrett, Ken Cornish, Steve Kay, Dustin Couch, Larry Morrison and Brett Rosnak neutralized the opposition's attack. Goalten- ders Brett Lambert and Roger Leblanc played steadily allowing' only one goal in the two gamés. Novices Lose To Pickering On Thursday, January 24th, Frank's Variety Novice Selects travelled to Don Beer's,Arena in Pickering, to match'ÿMVidlls against Pickering's seven year old Novices. Bowmanville played well, even though they have not been together as a team for well over a month. Pickering displayed excellent skating abilities and powerful team play, but were only able to put pne in behind our goalie, Clayton Rendell, who held them off for the rest of his shift. Both teams continued to work exceptionally hard but Bowmanville was unable to even out the score. Pickering returned the match Saturday, January 26th at 9:00 a.m. when they travelled travelled to Darlington Arena. Bowmanville unfortunately again was defeated 4 - 2. Our boys worked hard but were unable to put any more than two behind the Pickering goalkeeper. Frank's only scores went to Graig Taylor, unassisted, and Doug Parkin, assisted by Scott McGregor.
