Section Two The Cànadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 6,1985 5 Queen's Park Report By Sam Cureatz M.P.P. Ministry Warns Brides to Prepare Early forW edding As you are well aware, on January 26th, approximately 1,700 Progressive Conservative Conservative delegates elected a new party leader, as well as a new Premier for Ontario, the Hon. Frank Miller. The Progressive Conservative Conservative Caucus at Queen's Park is looking forward to the leadership of Mr. Miller and the challenges the party must now face, especially with the upcoming 1985 election. The process leading up to a leadership convention is complex; many events have occurred since the Hon. William Davis' resignation on October 8,1984. The resignation of a party leader signals the start of a leadership convention. The party's executive council sends notices to the province's riding associations to begin delegate selection for the convention. The executive council also must set the agenda, date and place of the convention. Ontario's Progressive Conservative Party delegates are not only elected by riding associations, but also by college and university campus associations and Progressive Conservative Clubs. Also, delegates may consist of: Progressive Conservative Senators from the Federal Senate, the party's executive council and elected officers from women's, youth and district associations. However, all candidates candidates in the last Federal or Provincial election (when they are not nominated for the next Federal or Provincial election), are also delegates. While the delegates are being elected, various people within the party will announce their candidacy for the leader's position. Each candidate must be nominated and seconded in writing by at least 10 delegates. Not more than two of these delegates may reside in the same electoral district of the nominated candidate. Campaigning for delegate support in the convention process is the most crucial for the candidates. First, each candidate must rent office space for his or her campaign headquarters. At these headquarters, volunteer campaign workers write brochures, contact delegates and help plot campaign strategies. Further, candidates campaign hard to win delegate support in the party caucus, and in each of Ontario's ridings, mostly through personal contact at events and meetings held throughout the province. Each wishes to prove to the delegates that he or she has the best qualifications for the leader of the party. After extensive and enduring campaigning, the date of the convention arrives. During the recent three- day convention, the four campaign camps worked furiously to obtain last-minute delegate support for their candidates. Voting day at conventions conventions is usually excruciating, and the 1985 leadership convention convention was no exception. According to party rules, an absolute majority of the votes cast is needed to win the leadership. This means that voting will continue until one Candidate has a majority of the votes. (Gene) Wrinkle has joined St. Marys Cement Company as Plant Manager of the Bowmanville operations. Further, the candidate with the lowest amount of votes must drop out of the race. This aspect is important, for these candidates can throw potential delegate support to one of the remaining candidates. At the convention, no candidate had a majority on the first two ballots, although Mr. Miller had the highest amount of votes in both cases. On the first ballot, Mr. McMurtry had the lowest amount of votes and was forced to drop out of the race. Consequently, he threw his support and potential delegate votes to Mr. Grossman. On the second ballot, Mr. Grossman narrowly won over Mr. Timbrell. This particular win was so close that Mr. Timbrell asked for a recount. However, the results stood and Mr. Sim anb Sintant îFaat The Reverend Wesley Oake of Trinity United Church, Bowmanville, was the Canadian representative at the Christian Peace Conference Conference held recently in Berlin, Germany. Last Friday morning St. Marys Cement Company officially officially presented a $17,000 Zamboni Ice Maker to the Town of Newcastle, for use at the Darlington Sports Centre. Debbie Stone, Nora Simpson and Julie Miso were among those helping answer the phones in y he 1975 Participation Participation House'Telethon.: Timbrell was officially out of the race. On the third and final ballot, Mr. Timbrell gave his support to Mr. Grossman. This made for an exciting and tense convention going into the final vote. In the end, Mr. Miller won over Mr. Grossman by 77 votes. In his victory speech, Mr. Miller as the new leader and Premier- elect, made several motions to ensure party unity. I believe these actions indicate that we have elected a strong and resourceful party leader who will make great gains for the Progressive Conservative Conservative Party and also for the Province of Ontario. Congratulations to Charles and Elsie Fisk on their 50th wedding anniversary on February 2nd. Future brides should shop early for wedding gowns to avoid the need for alterations at the altar. Some have discovered, just days before the wedding, wedding, that the bridal gown in the wrong size, color or style. Unfortunately, there's little that can be done on such short notice and the distraught women are often forced to take whatever they can get. .Be as cautious with the purchase of bridal gowns as with any other major expenditure expenditure and get started early. Many women start shopping for the dresses a year before before they are to get married. Decide how much you can afford to spend on the gowns. Once a choice is made, a special order for the appropriate appropriate size is placed with the manufacturer. Sometimes the dress will have to be altered to fit, but in many cases, only minor work is needed. "We do hear the occasional occasional horror story from brides or bridesmaids who are between sizes," says Roberta Allan, chief consumer consumer advisor for MCCR. "Their gowns were ordered in the larger size and required required extensive alterations alterations to make them fit. In some cases, the whole look of the dresses changed." Altering formal gowns demands demands an expert with a needle. needle. If major alterations will be necessary, try to stick to styles that won't suffer suffer when seams are taken in or hemlines raised. Also, be sure to ask if there are any extra charges for alterations. Don't settle for the common and ambiguous ambiguous answer that "normal "normal alterations are free." What's normal? Pick a store that deals in the appropriate price range. Don't go to the most expensive shop in town and buy their cheapest gowns. Staff tend to be less attentive attentive to customers buying the least expensive line. In addition to finding a flattering style, study the quality of dresses. Always check seams to be sure enough material was left to keep the dress together. together. Be particularly careful when inspecting inexpensive inexpensive gowns or you could end up hunting for safety pins on the wedding day. "It wouldn't be the first time a bride or bridesmaid has had to use pins to keep her dress together as she prepared to walk down the aisle," Allan says. A new method of gluing lace onto gowns cuts costs and can be an attractive, albeit albeit less durable, alternative. alternative. When budgets are tight, consider buying attendants' attendants' dresses which would be suitable for other occasions. As they have to place special orders, shops will insist on a deposit, usually ranging from 20 to 50 per cent of the total price. The deposit is normally non-re- fundable, even if the .wedding .wedding is called off. Try to place orders six months in advance of the wedding day. To help guard against disappointment, insist insist on delivery a month before before the actual ceremony. With enough time, most problems problems can be solved. Be sure to take a good look at the dress ordered. Write down any important style details and ask for a small sample of the fabric. During the long wait between between ordering and receiving receiving the gown, it is possible to forget what it looks like. The ministry has received complaints from brides who claim they did not get what they ordered. But, in many cases, the women looked at so many dresses when shopping, shopping, they simply forgot which one was finally chosen. chosen. Anyone who has had problems problems with a retailer, should call their local Consumer Consumer Advisory Services Bureau of MCCR.
