t The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 13,1985 11 SMALL TALK By Donna Fairey B&P Club International Meet Things are looking up. When I first began in this, hectic, sometimes sometimes crazy business of journalism, one kind soul felt moved to show his appreciation for an early piece I wrote by giving me a huge pink geranium plant. That was about seven years ago.. While geraniums are lovely they can't compare compare to the grand bouquet of cut flowers I received this week or the red carnations sent last Fall, or the roses that appeared last year. I tell you, there's no quicker way of worming into a woman's favor than by giying her flowers. flowers. So green was I at the outset that flowers and gifts from satisfied readers was news to me. If nobody called to rip my ear off about an omission or a perceived embellishment, embellishment, that was thanks enough. So when the first token of appreciation arrived, I was flattered but at the same time a little surprised. Moreover, the gifts weren't always flowers but I do believe the very first was the geranium. I've received apples, apples, potatoes, cheese, berries, brown eggs, honey, pumpkins, squash, corn, baked goods and indeed almost every food stuff imaginable. I've been given everything everything from a pin cushion cushion to a limited edition print. But whenever someone someone said thanks with flowers, I often won dered how appreciative appreciative readers expressed their gratitude to male writers - which brings us to another matter. I once asked a particular particular workmate how he would feel if a woman, or anyone for that matter, sent him flowers. He whispered his answer. I told him to quit mumbling, speak up and be a man about the issue. When he told me to keep the answer under my hat, I already knew he wouldn't at all mind a bouquet of posies. I was right as it turned out, but he didn't neces- FDR SALE MARY f w/m. VAm REfttKK Rfrtm mm. oshawaPH, BOWMANVILLE REAL ESTATE LTD. 623-2065 Z#t? In fact, he said he'd feel a little funny if his wife sent him a dozen roses on their anniversary anniversary (especially if they were delivered to the office) but he'd nevertheless appreciate appreciate the gesture. I ask you - where is it written that a man shouldn't enjoy flowers and the thought behind them. Why is it more or less an unspoken assumption assumption that a male who can be moved by a long stem rose is probably, probably, well, er, a little "funny." It's unfair, if you ask me. While I realize it's treading on sacred ground, Valentine's Day is upon us, providing providing justification for us women to make up for centuries of injustice.
