Passersby, astonished at their massive numbers, witnessed witnessed them tobogganning, playing tug-of-war with the leaders of their colony, and even trying to master the art of dog sled racing. The Beavers present were participants of the annual annual west Durham Beaveree which included members and leaders from BBS Students Have Big Plans For Heart Fund Campaign Bowmanville High School students will be dressing up as their favorite celebrity, selling carnations, and even running a computer dating service during this week's Heart Fund/Winter Carnival activities. Proceeds from all of the special events will go towards towards the annual Heart Fund drive. "We estimate that about $2,000 will be raised," said Douglas Brown, the student responsible for the Winter Carnival Week co-ordinating co-ordinating committee. This is the third major fund-raising effort for B.H.S. students this year. Earlier, they raised approximately approximately $2,000 for the annual annual United Way campaign. In addition, they recently raised funds to help the starving in Ethiopia. The week's activities began Monday with Plaid Day and with a computer dating service that allowed a student to receive a list of top 20 dates for a fee of $2. On Tuesday,' students came to school dressed as their favorite. celebrity while on Wednesday they were invited to come to school dressed as "tourists". Thursday was Red and White Day and Friday was "Slob Day". "The whole purpose of a Beaveree is simply to get together together with the different colonies in the area and have an all-around great day," explained Ian Wilson of the District Service Team. Regardless of Saturday's sub-zero temperatures, the young boys dressed in their warmest attire and enjoyed the morning's events which featured everything from snow tag to building igloos and learning how to ride real dog sleds. Of course, most of the youths having never seen a dog sled before, considered the sled rides the highlight of the day. The three teams of eight, owned by Linda Brown, were well groomed, well trained animals from the Ontario Working Dog Association. Association. Volunteers from the Association who attended attended the Beaveree demonstrated demonstrated the dogs' talents talents to the kids and let them experience for themselves the thrill of gliding over the. deep snow using only dog- power. After a morning of snowy activities, all of the Beavers were called in for a lunch of hot dogs and steaming soup, a meal perfectly suited to warm their chilled bones. Once inside, the kids admitted admitted that Saturday's north wind was a bit overwhelming overwhelming but they had a good time despite it.
