It would appear the game got off to a slow motion start but Square Boy managed to score the only goal of the.period as Captain Kellet connected with the (D.J.) picking up the assist. The second period opened up a bit more from both teams as Nichols got on the score- board twice and Square Boy's adding two goals. Working hard in the game paid off for this line as Mark Burns scored his first goal assisted by Greg Raby and Joseph Szabo. The trio kept at it as Mark slammed slammed in his second goal of the game. Later on in the game this line nearly had their third goal as Mark missed an opportunity opportunity by only inches. A big third period by the (D.J.) as his defense was caught up ice he hustled back to cover up taking his attacker out of play with a good clean check nullifying the play. A few minutes later (D.J.) scored a goal assisted by Captain Kellet and the Big (M). The Nichol team bounced back with two unanswered goals to end the game 4 - 4. Keep working guys. The Scouts, who collect paper from area residents every eight or nine weeks to raise funds for their outings, gathered only 12 tons on the weekend, compared to their usual quota of 20 tons or more. Pictured here sorting out some of the bundles are (left to right) Chris Hilborn, Eddie Cook, Zane Pieckenbrock, Robin Baker, James Bentley, and Sean Langley. by Catherine Denny Local Boy Scouts are concerned concerned about the recent lack of success they've been having with their traditional traditional paper drives in the area. The Scouts, who depend on paper drives to raise badly-needed funds, have noticed a steady decline in the amount of newsprint being collected from area residents. Last Saturday's drive was especially disappointing for the hard-working boys who attained only 12 tons of paper -- a big decrease from the 20 to 30 tons they usually receive. "The paper drives are our major means of fund raising," raising," explained Ernie Col- liss, leader of the Salvation Army Scout Troop. "If this lack of interest continues, then we'll have to quit the paper drive and go door-to- door or something," he added. Mr. Colliss went on to explain explain that their business has probably been hurt due to the opening of the Town of Newcastle's own recycling recycling program offered through Durham Recycling Centre. The centre now offers offers newsprint collection at the curbside on garbage day. The Scout leader feels that residents may be putting putting their newsprint out for the recycling depot rather than saving it for the boys, who are not associated with the weekday pickups. "There are over 220 Scouts Scouts in Bowmanville alone who benefit greatly from the profits obtained through the paper drive," said Ernie. "The money goes toward jamborees, camping, and various materials materials needed for • Scout events." Aside from thanking those who did contribute to the drive last weekend, Mr. Collis wanted to remind people in the area to please save their newsprint for the next paper drive. It will be for a good cause.
