The Newtonville resident, resident, now a sports announcer announcer for CKLC in Kingston, Kingston, met the "voice of hockey" hockey" while working on a college college project a few years ago -- a meeting that he'll never forget. "I was really impressed with the man," explained Mr. Campbell. "He knew more about hockey than anyone could, yet he was surprisingly humble and easy to talk to." Pete's interview with the announcer took place in Foster Hewitt's Toronto office office where the aging sports caster spent over two and a half hours reminiscing about hockey's greatest plays and offering his young interviewer some valuable tips on how to succeed in the business. "He had a great impact on my career-- and the career of every other sports caster for that matter," said Pete. "You can't help but look up to someone like Foster. He made hockey famous." Mr. Campbell went on to say that Foster was more than just an announcer, he was an important element of our culture. "He brought Canadians together every Saturday evening," said the fan. "His death was a sad oc- cassion for many Canadians because we all knew him as a brother. I felt privileged that I had the opportunity to meet him." Thousands of Canadians and hockey fans across the country share the same sentiment sentiment about Mr. Hewitt's death as Pete Campbell, and -- without having ever known him -- most will probably best remember Foster as the man who coined the phrase, "He shoots, he scores!" trentway tours CANADA SO MUCH TO GO FOR EAST COAST CHARMS (VERMONT, MAINE, NEW BRUNSWICK, P.E.I., NOVA SCOTIA, QUEBEC) 13 DAY...23 DEPARTURES, FROM JUNE 3 TO SEPT. 30 COMPARE THE VALUE *895" PER PERSON TWIN JUNE DEPARTURES DISCOUNTED 10% NEWFOUNDLAND 4 EASTERN CANADA 19 DAY...13 DEPARTURES FROM JUNE 15 - SEPT. 7 *1275" PER PERSON TWIN JUNE 15 DEPARTURE IS DISCOUNTED 10% WESTERN ADVENTURE U.S.A. 4 CANADA 23 DAY...DEPART JUNE 29 JULY 6. 27, AUGUST 10, SEPTEMBER 7 *1550*° PER PERSON TWIN JUNE 29. Christian Farmers Federation Attacks Capital Gains Plan Final rehearsals are underway for Bowmanville High School's presentation of "Inherit the Wind." The cast and crew are making final preparations for the show which runs from May 8 to 11. There will be a free performance for senior citizens on Monday, May 6th. The curtain will rise at 7:00 p.m. for this special presentation. Tickets for the regular performances are available at the school. The Conservative election promise of the 1984 federal election to eliminate capital gains tax on farmland targets the wrong people and will have unacceptable effects both in the short-term and the long-term according to the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario. The CFFO's Provincial Board has adopted a formal policy statement calling for the retention of capital gains tax on farmland. The tax should stay, the Federation says for both the sake of agriculture and in the interest of fairness in public policy. "Farm policy should not help those going out of business business at the expense of beginning beginning and struggling entrepreneurs," entrepreneurs," . the statement says. "The elimination of the tax is not designed to help farm entrepreneurs deal with the risk of agricultural production or marketing." "Beginning farmers would be seriously disadvantaged by the proposal," the Federation says. "They would have to compete for land with purely investment money seeking a tax free capital gain by holding holding farmland." The Federation is opposed to encouraging investors to purchase farms since more investor ownership of food- land will force more farmers to lease. This, the Federation fears, will lead to increasing foodland degradation since Ontario does not have a tradition tradition of long-term leases. Existing policies that allow family farmers to defer capital gains tax on farmland when it is sold within the. family arid that allow a rollover rollover of $120,000 of capital gains into an RRSP provide enough opportunities for tax sheltering, according to the Federation. Rehearsals are in full swing for next week's production of "Inherit The Wind" at Bowmanville Bowmanville High School. Monday, May 6 at 7:00 p.m. there will be a free performance performance for senior citizens and shut-ins. Performances run from Wednesday, May 8th to Saturday, May 11 and begin at 8:00p.m. sharp. All tickets are reserved and may be purchased purchased from any Bowmanville High School student. The box office in the high school will be open at noon hour and after school. Tickets will also be held for you if you wish to reserve through the school secretaries at 623-4416 during school hours. The play is a re-enactment of the famous Scopes Monkey. Trial of 1925 in the state of Tennesee. Authors Lawrence and Lee have added to the plot the love story of the biology teacher, whom they call Bertram Cates, and Rachel Brown, the fundamentalist minister's daughter. Bertram Cates has been accused of teaching Darwin's theory of evolution in the class-room, a teaching that contravenes the law of Tennesee which states that no person may teach material that contradicts the literal interpretation of the Bible. The principals in the play are double cast and play leading roles on alternate nights. Be sure to pick the correct night to see the play if you are interested in watching a particular student. Each night there will be sixty-six actors on stage. This is a dramatic production of scope and magnitude which involves authentic scenery and costumes of the period.
