Wednesday saw a renewal of the Cobourg-Bowmanville rivalry, which will continue until the local play-offs are over. Cobourg had just finished a rugged game with Lindsay where they lost six players by suspensions. Our midgets took full advantage to down the eastern boys 8-1. David Smith handled 30 shots enroule to the win. One of the strengths of our team is the ability of every one to score. This was proven by all eight goals being scored by individuals, John Romano, Glen Campbell, George Pithie, Kelly Armstrong, David Fariey, Larry Perris, Jamie Lever and Scott Page. The next time these teams meet will probably be in January at play-off time, when we will be out to battle for the right to advance. An M.T.H.L. team, the Hill- crest Summits from Scarborough, Scarborough, visited the Darlington Darlington Sports Palace on Saturday night and were downed 6 - 3 by the St. Marys Cement plant boys. Glen Campbell came up with the hat trick, all on passes from Shawn Rekker. Other goals were scored by Paul Stainton, Chris Shmyr and George Pithie. Scott Webster faced 21 shots in the locals net and was unbeatable on two break-aways. Pyramid Points This week we would like to start a player introduction which will consist of two players per week. David Smith who wears number one, has been a dominating force in goal throughout his career in minor hockey. His quickness and excellent angle play makes him tough to beat. His cheerful cheerful and polite manner is an excellent asset to team spirit. David so far this year has played 13 games, recording three shut-outs, has a ratio of one goal to 14 shots and a game average of 2.38 goals per game. Scott Webster who is number 30, played goal for five years in' Bowmanville's recreation league before he was picked up by Brian Taylor of the major bantams two years ago. Scott uses his size well to cut down the angles allowing less net for the opposition to shoot at. Scott uses his stick well to help keep the puck cleared from our zone. His sense of anticipation has helped him make key stops. Scott has one shut-out, a ratio of one goal per 9.25 shots and over 14 games has an average of 3.5 goals per game. Scott's highlight of the season so far was defeating Simcoe in, an over-time and shoot-out game, where he also won the outstanding goaltending award for the tournament. Both our goaltenders will tell you that they can only be as strong as the team in front of them. Scotland Smitty both receive excellent moral and game support from all team members. Three games are lined up for this week. In Port Perry Monday, at home to Lindsay, Wednesday and hosts to Pickering Minors on Saturday at 5:00. W„ Oshawa The Flying Dutchman Toros will be off to Parry Sound this coming weekend to defend their title in the Bobby Orr tournament. In preparation for this the team played four games, plus a skate-a-thon of 200 laps in the past week. The following write-ups were done by one of the team's parents as to how they viewed the games. The Flying Dutchman Motor Hotel sponsored Toro Atoms hosted the Lindsay Atoms : on' - Wednesday; November 20th. Our Toros carried over their enthusiasm from their previous wins to jump out into the lead early in the first period. David Real picked up a clearing pass at his own blueline blueline and dumped the puck from centre " ice into the Lindsay end. He then hustled into the zone and beat the Lindsay defenders to the.puck, looked for his team-mates, and found Terry Van Londen coming up 1 'the slot. A good pass on Terry's-ptick, then a good shot from Terry, staked Bowmanville to an early 1 - 0 lead. A few minutes later, aggressive penalty killing by forward's Chad Armstrong and Richard Bateman, with the defense duo of Joel Crombie and Neil Bateman, upped the lead to 2 - 0 for Bowmanville. - With the Lindsay team trying to come otit of their own end, and the 1 Toro forwards pressuring them, Richard knocked down a pass and centered it to Chad in the slot. Chad beat a defenseman and-' the goalie with a good low shot. The game then settled into a tight defensive battle until late/ in the second period when a Lindsay defenceman let a shot go from the point that beat â screened Toro goalie. This seemed to inspire the Lindsay team who added two more goals early in the third for a 3 - 2 lead. The Toros didn't give up however, and continued to press into the last minute. With eight seconds to go, face- off in the Lindsay zone and the Toro goalie on the bench for an extra attacker, Terry VanLonden won the faceoff. The puck went back td the point for a shot by Jason Crosbie, this was knocked down, another shot from in front of the net from the ganging Toros, before the puck was cleared. Game over. Lindsay 3, Bowmanville 2, After a day off the Toros journeyed to Stouffville on Friday, November 22nd. This was our team's first game in their beautiful new arena .which has an extremely large (long) ice surface, and it came on a day we were favored with our first winter storm. Stouffville got a lucky goal early on an accidental deflection, deflection, then increased their lead to 2 - 0 with good puck control and effective passing ' that used the benefits permitted of the larger ice surface. The Toros finally got going in the x later stages of the first period and held Stouffville scoreless, courtesy of Eddie Strickland and Paul Zwicker, through the second period and into the third, •Early-in' the third period with powerplay forwards' Chad Armstrong, Richatd Bateman and Tyler Stokes, defenseman Chad Vander- Ende let a shot go from the blueline that Richard deflected deflected past the Stouffville goalie, with an assist going to Tyler who set up the shot. Stouff- ville's team was still passing well and skating hard and soon restored their two goal lead. Stouffville 3, Bowmanville Bowmanville 1. . Right from the ensuing face-off however, David Real picked up a loose puck, beat the defensemen at the blueline and then skated in and blasted a drive past the goalie to again bring them within one of a tie. Stouffville added a late goal however, to preserve the win. Final score Stouffville 4, Bowmanville 2. / z On Saturday, November 23rd, following the Toros skate-a-thon, the Ajax Knights Atom team arrived to play an aggressive game with our Toros. In a game that many of • our parents thought one of our best, the Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Spurred by newcomer David Szabo the Toros fought back to tie the score. Marty Burgess knocked : a puck loose at the Toro blue- line that David picked up and carried to the.Ajax zone. He let a good hard shot go that was stopped by the goalie but Marty tipped the rebound home. The tying goal was scored by David Szabo on a good pass from Ryan Stewart. There were many more good scoring chances throughput throughput the game, Joel Crombie from Richard Bateman and Tyler Stokes, David Szabo 571-0189 N w s TAUNTON RD. Finally Ajax was able to break through for two scores late in the game. . Final ,,score . Ajax 4, Bowmanville'2,' but a good solid effort, and game. Game four was played Sunday afternoon, Grey Cup Day,' at Napanee. The home team took a 1 - 0 lead after one period, and added two more goals in the second. Both teams went to the dressing room after two periods, but the Dutchmen came out flying in third. With one minute gone in the third, the Toros No. 10, Marty "Popeye" Burgess scored from No. 15, David Szabo, only to have Napanee score their fourth goal a few minutes later. Bowmanville continued their hustle and it paid off as the Toro's captain, No. 16, Tyler Stokes scored on a good second effort from No. 2, Neil "Boy Wonder" Bateman. Napanee scored the final marker to win the game 5 -2. Upcoming events:. Thursday, Nov. 21 After a previous 3 - 3 tie with Pickering Village, it was felt that we would be in a typical situation in Pickering's own rink, but a 11 -1 win proved us wrong. Matt Dykstra once again proved to be the sparkplug sparkplug as he scored five goals and added two assists. Matt has been our most consistent scorer this season and this was to be his game. Collin Taggart helped with two goals and one assist, David Szabo two goals, Mark Bradley one goal and one assist, John Whittaker one goal, Steven Deblois two assists, Craig Forsey two assists, and Danny Couillard and Matt Aitken one assisteach. This was certainly a game in our favor, but our previous 8 - 3 loss to Whitby provided added incentive for this game. Saturday, Nov. 23 This was our first game againstL.N.H.L. major teams and it proved too much for us as we lost 7-2 with Darlington against the Canadians. The score was a respectful 3 -1 for our visitors at the end of the second period, but four consecutive goals in four minutes at the start of the third period was too much to overcome. Our side had just participated in our 200 lap skate-a-thon four hours previously and our players just ran our of legs. We tried hard but we were tired. Full marks to Jamie Doyle who faced 37 shots and who made numerous splendid saves to hold us in this game. This was a physical game, as a few of our players had to be helped to our bench. Scoring for Bowmanville Bowmanville were Danny Couillard Couillard (his first) from Jeff White and Matt Dykstra from Mark Bradley. Our players can keep their heads raised. As this vyas certainly a tough game ft»r them. Thanks; guys for ydur fund raising. Special tharjls 1 also to Chris McCarthy wno filled in at defense, and Brandon Osmond (our goalie) who played left wing. Welcome to Corey Strand who came to us from the majors and good luck to David Szabo who has left us to take Corey's place. Both players should fit in well with their respective clubs. Sunday, Nov. 24,1985 . As always we save our best for last. The best game Was Sunday night against Union- ville Selects (Chris McCarthy's old team). As this was Grey Cup Day - thanks to the parents and players for coming out. We were in a tight match leading 2 -1 at the end of the first period but Matt Dykstra's two goals at the start of the second, proved to be the difference as we skated to a 5 - 3 win. Chris was up for this game as he visited the visitors dressing room to see ail his old friends. He hit the post twice and didn't score in this game, but he continued friendships which will last forever. Craig Forsey scored at the 28 second mark of the first from Steve Deblois and John Whittaker scored a minute later from Matt Dykstra. Matt also scored our final goal from Collin Taggart who had two assists. Chris McCarthy and Matt Aitken added single assists each to round out the scoring. The players also presented their coach Mr. Osmond with a gift for his up-coming marriage to Sandra. Good luck to them from the team and parents. Shoppers Over London Life Shoppers Drug Mart came up with a spirited performance performance on Saturday, to hand London Life its first defeat of this young season. Led by two goals from Brent Strand, Shoppers managed to hold on to first place in the league. Coach Erik Strand has moulded his players into the type of team his past exploits will attest to. London Life played with 13 players from its 16 player roster, and played with enthusiasm deserving of its young team. Keep up the hard work and to Jason Lange, get better soon - we need you. Hydro Wins Close Game On Saturday,- November 16, Hydro played London Life. Both teams are to be commended for their great determination. It was a very close checking game with the score tied 3 - 3 and only two minutes 22 seconds left in the game. On the last shift, Ryan Becker put on a burst of speed and scored two fast goals, 17 seconds apart. The final score Hydro 5, London Life 3. Our goals were scored by Jeff Martin (one), Kevin Colbourne (one) and Ryan Becker (three). Assists went to Matthew Yeo (three), Jeff Martin (one), Chris Aiken (one), and Andrea Gibson (one).
