I Section Two 6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 5,1986 PONTYPOOL NEWS Greetings, neighbours. Already we are into the second month of the year and it is the hope of your correspondent that January was a happy start to the year. If my column this week is short, it is because of my husband being able to take a cancellation appointment for surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital, instead of having to wait until the third week in March. He is in the operating room now as this column is being written. Please pray for both of us, in the period of recovery, that everything may work out well. He was quite relaxed when 1 left him yesterday. Rev. Heather Smith's time with the children was at first a story out of China, pointing out the value of individuals over material gifts. Also, they sang a " song with guitar accompaniment, "I've Got The Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy, Down In My Heart". There was a chorus to it which was new. In her sermon, she zeroed in on the value of Scripture, and the inspiration it can give to a person doing their own study. The hymns and passages from Elizabethville Church services were held as usual. Mrs, Lynda King was with us. The choir had an anthem. Mrs. King's story for the children was on the life of the butterfly. A small boy found a caterpillar and kept it and when the butterfly came from the cocoon that the caterpillar caterpillar made. She asked what became of the butterfly. She told of a man that studied about them many years ago and through putting marks on the butterflies, was able to find out where they went through advertizing and found them in parts of Mexico. Our Scripture lesson was Genesis 50: 15-21, Luke 13: 31-35. Mrs. King said that today is the last day of the week of prayer for union of churches for peace and spoke ■ on the creative power of love. Some Pharisees warned Jesus that Herod wanted to kill him. Jesus answered he was busy driving out demons and performing cures. Jerusalem - you kill the ' prophets, you stone the messengers, that God has sent you. And so your temple will be abandoned and you will not see me until the time comes when you say God bless him who comes in the name of ' the Lord, Mr. Smith and Greg Smith took up the offering. Mr. Walker was at the door. Coffee was served as usual and Steward's meeting was held at the close of the service. 'Mr. and Mrs. C. Mercer had iMr. and Mrs. W. Terbenche; • Leighanne Terbenche ; Darryl Terbenche and friend on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Beatty attended little Jamie's birthday party on Sunday at Mr. and Mrs, Burton's. Mr. and Mrs. H. Quantrill spent Tuesday in Oshawa visiting with Mrs. W. Muldrew and had tea with Mr. and Mrs. E. Elliott. both the Old Testament and New Testament were all geared towards this theme. There was a fair turnout at the Congregational Meeting, by the minister staying after the sendee and starting proceedings while lunch was served. There were many interesting items covered. The sympathy of the community goes to the family and friends of Mrs. Violet Letitia Wood, who died at Trenton Memorial Hospital on Saturday, January 4th, 1966. Funeral service from Kaye "Memorial Chapel", Peterborough, Tuesday, January 7th. Interment, St. John's Cemetery, Ida. She was the dear mother of Melville of Millbrook and Mrs. Angus Johnson (Henrietta) of Frankford. Of course, all our prayers go to the bereaved families of the seven astronauts who were killed in the recent space shuttle explosion. We pray that NASA scientists will be able to find out what happened to prevent such a thing happening again, before they permit any future manned space trips. Turning to the results of Monday, January 27th, in our Ladies Bowling League at the Millbrook Lanes, high bowler was Marg Dew, with a high single score of 262 and a high double score of 388. So far this term, the Slow Pokes, under captain, Yvonne Fallis, are, despite their name, in the first place spot. On Thursday, January 23rd, a meeting of the Keenagers was held at the Pontypool Community Centre, with an attendance of 25. Six tables of euchre were played. High Lady, Kay Beggs 68, Low Lady, Ruth Brown, 46. High Man, Don Godin 72, Low Man, Bob Cameron, 47. Winner Take All draw was won by Dorothy Bo wins. Twelve people paid their dues for 1986, making a total of 45. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, February 6th at 8:00 p.m. According to Joan Jeffery, the Pontypool Input Youth Group bowling party was very successful. Your correspondent notices, in reading over her carbon copy of last week, I omitted the date of the spaghetti dinner. I am sorry about this. The date is Sunday, February 9th. This is this coming Sunday, the nearest Sunday to St. Valentine's Day. Treat your wife or girl to a meal out. She'll appreciate it. This event was well announced at the Bingo in the Community Hall on Wednesday, January 29th. . .... This Bingo on Wednesday night had some interesting new game variations, which were quite fun to participate in. When people visit other places, and events, the advantages of the home operation are all the more appreciated. This is true in the case of these Bingo evenings.
