Proceeds were for the Bowmanville Hospital Diabetic Clinic. Together with the draw, nearly one thousand dollars were raised for this worthy project. Winner of the quilt was Margaret Lover, Toronto. Winner of the $60.00 gift certificate certificate from Gaytown was Glenda Rumbles, Norwood. Newcastle Horticultural Society On Tuesday evening, Jan. 2lst, 1986, the Newcastle Horticultural Society met in the Centennial Room of the Newcastle Community Hall. President Vicki Lesnick opened the meeting with a fitting poem, before turning the program over to Reinhold Schumann, who showed slides, with commentary on Williamsburg; Virginia, gardens. These historical gardens were very beautiful with their boxwood and holly hedges, flowers, trees and shrubs. Mr. and Mrs. Ivor Brawley's slides of past garden shows and horticulture, horticulture, and President Vicki's Canadian West slides concluded concluded the entertainment. A beautiful winter day brought forth our worshippers to the church and Sunday school service on Sunday. Although Although a number of our congregation congregation were home sick with flu or colds, there still was a good turnout. The Ministry of Praise came ' next with the choir rendering a beautiful number under the direction of our organist and choir leader, Mrs. Utah Chambers. Pastor Joe's Scriptural Lesson was taken from the New Testament, Luke 8 : 40-48. Mr. Lafave based his message on "The Vital Touch." The thought from the Pastor's study which he printed printed in the church bulletin was "The supreme happiness of life is the conviction Of being loved for yourself, or, more correctly, -, Being loved in . spite of yourself. As a result his friends didn't want to play with him. When he finally loaned his precious cars to a sick cousin, his friends came back and the little boy learned the need to share. So in the sermon, based on "Responding to God's Call", Mrs. King referred to Isaiah and Jeremiah being called to service and replying they were unfitted and inexperienced. So many times each of us has hesitated to accept a position of responsibility with the same excuse that we are not equal to the task. But each new task is a learning experience and there is a sharing of the task by others. The concluding hymn "Take My Life" was a commitment to realize God's purpose for us. The choir's rousing anthem, "The Wonder of his Work", was an inspiration to be a part of God's work. The offering was received by John Connelly and Harold Austin. Harold and Verna Austin- went to a northern lake for a* fishing trip last Monday and. came back with some tasty treats for the table. Mrs. Emma Darke is still in; Port Hospital but will be home' as soon as diet routine is stabilized. Roy and Elva Austin,; returning from Toronto on I Saturday found the driving, very slow, but saw no accidents for everyone seemed to be driving with" extreme caution, and were grateful to be home safely. The snow was sufficient to cover the brown fields and bring back winter's beauty a< well as preventing the continual blowing of dust from' bare ground. Birds are more constant at the feeders and are a real study in bird personalities. The little chestnut capped tree sparrows are very bossy witti each other, but the one lone song sparrow.will order them off, while all leave when the handsome big bluejay comes. Chickadees hang on the bag of suet, swinging in the wind.
