Ken Hall and J, Patterson Patterson (one plus one) completed the scoring for the winners while the following players all earned assists, U. Probert (three), S. Hall (three), andB. Hunter (two). Port Hope Eliminates Bowmanville in Overtime Win The Port Hope Panthers pulled off the upset of the year with a 4-3 overtime victory against the Bowmanville Eagles on Thursday night in Port Hope. The Panthers now meet the Cobourg By Dan Moriarity The Cowan Pontiac sponsored sponsored Bowmanville Eagles Jr. C Hockey team had their work cut out for them this past week, trailing the Port Hope Panthers two games to one in their best of seven quarter final playoff series and facing two games in Port Hope. On Tuesday, the Eagles came out flying in the first period, with Chris Dreossi scoring just 33 seconds into the game to give the Eagles a 1 -.0 edge. Brian Heard followed suit with a pair of goals just 39 seconds apart and it was 3 - 0. The Panthers fought back, however, with a goal in the first period and two in the second to tie the game after 40 minutes. Dreossi put the Eagles up 4 - 3 early in the third period but Port Hope tied the game with about five minutes remaining and scored the winner with just 2:34 left in the game to take a 3 -1 lead in the series. With their backs against the wall, the Eagles tied to rally for game five on Thursday. After Port Hope had taken a 1 - Cougars in the best of seven semi-finals, which started Monday night in Cobourg. Above, captain Glenn German scrambles for the puck during last week's game in Port Hope. 0 lead, Chris Michelson tied the game at the 17:25 mark of the first period. Panther star Tony Wakely put Port Hope up 2 -1 with his second goal of the game. Brian Heard tied the score again with 28 seconds remaining in the period. After a power play goal by Port Hope late in the second period, the Eagles tried desperately to tie the game again. Their efforts were rewarded when Chris Michelson Michelson scored withjust 31 seconds left in regulation time to send the game into overtime. 14 seconds remained in the first overtime period when Wakely scored to give Port Hope the game and the series. It was the toughest of losses 1 for the Cowan Eagles who lost three of the four games in the series by a single goal, and two of those in overtime. Carl Nielsen, Bob Luxton, Ken Johnson, and Jim Murphy, the Eagles' coaching staff deserve a great deal of credit for the way they tried to pull the team together for that last game, despite a myriad of setbacks. The Panthers also deserve credit for their performance, pulling off a very major and unexpected upset of the powerful Eagles. To them, congratulations and the best of luck in the balance of their playoff schedule. Finally, congratulations to the Cowan Eagles on a super season in which they finished in first place during the regular season (again) and produced some very exciting hockey throughout the year. Thank you, and we'll be looking looking forward to next year which could well be another terrific year, perhaps even better than this one.
