Blackstock * District (Cartwright) Lions Club News Susan Kyte and Chris Chorestecki participated in the Lions Region 45E oral communicatioana competition held in Ballantrae last week. Among all of the girl speakers Susan managed a second place finish and will speak again this Wednesday in the District finals at Stouffville. Chris faced tough competition also, among the boys. The Blackstock Lions who accompanied these two speakers were Ken Lee and Mike Dearborn. Chris and Susan are congratulated congratulated by all of the Blackstock and District Lions for the professional professional way in which they conducted themselves. Caesarea Community Church The friendly Community Church had an excellent attendance for both Good Friday Service and Easter Sunday. Rev. Charles Clarke spoke on Good Friday... his message was entitled, "The Last Week of Jesus" ... the text based on Matthew 27 and Psalm 22. Holy Communion was celebrated. On Easter Sunday with over forty forty worshippers in the congregation, Rev. Dr. W.H. Crawford spoke on "Resurrection, Fact Or Fable" from I Corinthians 15: 20. Daniel Pugh Jr., read the Scripture. Two duets were enjoyed sung by a mother and daugther team- Mrs. Moldoyano and Mrs. Kathleen Tromans "Were You There?" and "Because He Lives" accompanied accompanied by organist Kathleen Watt. Some new hymn books were dedicated. A children's Church with a good number present was held in the new Hall. A very fine service. Birthday Surprise Party Doris Nottingham, Caesarea, was pleasantly surprised on Sunday evening when the family "hosted" a surprise birthday celebration with all the trimmings ... held at the "Stairs" Restaurant in Oshawa. Later, they went to son Gary and Newcastle and District Concert Series presents "The Percussionisticks" Sunday, April 6th 7:30 p.m. in Newcastle Community Hall Tickets: $8.00 Marg Nottingham's home at Raglan for birthday cake. All the family were present... 23 in all. The family family presented Doris with a lovely gift. We extend best wishes to Doris for many more such happy occasions. Nestletoe United Church The Good Friday Service hosted by Nestleton United Church for the Blackstock charge was well attended attended with Ralph Banner and Ralph Sadler extending the welcome at the door. Rev. Dale Davis conducted the impressive Service assisted by Student Student Minister Verna Windrem ... dealing with the Seven Deadly Sins. The pulpit was draped in black with seven purple candles burning to begin the Service and extinguished by the seven readers representing the seven sine. A large wooden Cross and Crown of thorns rested on the Communion Table. Readings by various members from both Blackstock and Nestleton Churches interspersed by choral response by the choir and the congregation made for a very appropriate Good "Friday Service. A Ladies' quartet sang two numbers, "If That Isn't Love" and "Follow Me" also a solo by Janice MacKenzie "I Walked In The Garden." The offering was received by Ralph Larmer and Ralph Sadler. The service closed with "of Thy Love" Gwen Malcolm - organist. Easter Sunday Greeting at the door were David and Regenia Walker, Avril and Kyle, on a spring day which brought forth many worshippers to church. The service conducted by Rev. Dale Davis ... ably assisted by Verna Windrem. Many beautiful hymns were sung in keeping with Easter celebration. The Sunday School sang- led by Janice MacKenzie- pianist Betty Headon and much enjoyed. enjoyed. The children liked their story with Rev. Dale who had a real live bunny for them to see and pet. The lovely flowers gracing the Sanctuary Sanctuary were placed in memory of Cecil B.R. Henderson by his wife Christina and daughter Chris Davis and family. A great Easter celebration! Easter News Items Henry and Effa Stain ton hosted their family for Easter... also a birthday birthday celebration for father and grandpa Henry. Skylight Donuts Volunteers Help with Income Tax Returns From February through April last year, during the federal income tax filing period, more than 2,100 people volunteered their time and efforts to assist the visually- impaired, the disabled, new Canadians and low-income families in completing their income tax returns. The Honourable Elmer MacKay, Minister of National Revenue, described the program program as an outstanding example example of a government department department working closely with the community. "This program helps people obtain much- needed assistance when, for a variety of reasons, they can't complete their tax returns themselves," said Mr. MacKay. MacKay. Now in its tenth year, the Volunteer Program works at the community level through the 29 District Taxation Offices across Canada. These offices hold training sessions for the volunteers every tax filing season. While the volunteers volunteers don't emerge as tax experts, they do become familiar with the fundamentals fundamentals of completing straightforward straightforward returns. Training sessions in most District Offices begin in mid- February. Interested volunteer volunteer agencies or groups contact contact the District Office early in the year and arrange for sessions sessions at a convenient time and place.
