Bowmanville aad District Navy Lea gee This week I wish to spotlight Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Greg Henning, who is the senior N.C.O. of R.C.S.C.C. . Bowmanville ("the coxswain"). coxswain"). Greg is the son of Bill and Norma Henning and has been in the corps since it began in 1981. Greg has been a very active cadet in corps activities and whenever there was a job to be done, we could count on Greg to do his share. He has made steady progress through the ranks to his present chief's rank. In the summer of 1982 he attended a two week basic training course at C.F.B. ComwaHiss in Nova Scotia. In 1983, he took the Junior Leadership course ' at H.M.C.S. Tillicum in North Bay. In 1984 Greg was at H.M.C.S. Ontario in Kingston to take the practical leadership leadership course. In the summer of 1984, he was on staff (boat- shed) at H.C.M.S. Quadra in Comox, B.C. In June of 1985, Greg sailed on the tall ship, St. Lawrence II, from Kingston to Quebec City. During the Christmas holidays 1984, he was one of five cadets chosen from Eastern Eastern area to spend 10 days on a duty boat sailing out of Victoria, Victoria, B.C. in the Georgia Strait. The rest of the crew were reserve Navy personnel from H.M.C.S. Cataraqui in Kingston. Greg was the divisional Petty Officer when Algonquin division was chosen as the best at the 1984 annual inspection. inspection. He was also chosen as the most active cadet for the training year 1984-85. He received his bronze award in the Duke of Edinburgh awards program in 1984 and received his silver award from Lt. Governor Lincoln Alexander at Burlington, Ont. in 1985. Greg is planning to attend college to study law enforcement enforcement with the intention of becoming a police officer. We wish him well in his chosen vocation. The annual inspection for the 1985-86 year will be held at Newcastle Memorial Arena on Sunday, June 1st at 2 p.m. The public is most welcome at this event. On behalf of the cadets, Corps Officers and members of the Navy League, I wish to "Welcome Aboard" Rev. Edward Schamerhorn, who has accepted our invitation to become the Chaplain of the corps and Navy League branch. Rev. Ed's past experience experience as a Canadian Army Chaplain and his close work yvith young people in his various church appointments should be a valuable asset to both our groups. The Sea Cadet Corps has room for more members; young people from ages of 13 to 18. If you are interested, come to Central Public School any Tuesday evening at 6:45 p.m. and inquire about our program. Waterfowl Viewing Day at Lynde Shores Conservation Area The Conservation Authority will hold its annual Waterfowl Viewing Day at Lynde Shores Conservation Area on Sunday, April 13. Virtually all of the locally occurring varieties of ducks, geese and swans have returned from the south. This means that you may expect to see 20 or so different species of waterfowl during your visit. In addition, the varied habitats of the area attract many other water birds as well as songbirds. songbirds. A viewing station will be set up at Cranberry Marsh between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. From the parking lot, visitors are asked to proceed south down the path towards the lake. The viewing station will be located on a side trail on the right side of the path, at the bench. The walk will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. An Authority naturalist will point out the various species and answer questions. Visitors will have an opportunity to make use of the new wooden viewing platform platform which was completed last fall, For those wanting a more in-depth look at our April migrants, a guided walk is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Participants Participants are asked to meet at the parking lot. The tour will last approximately two hours and will include woodlot, marsh, field and lakeshore habitats. This program follows National Wildlife Week, April 6th to 12th. This week has been set aside to encourage Canadians Canadians to appreciate, learn and help preserve our wildlife heritage. Lynde Shores Conservation Area is located south of Victoria Victoria Street (Baseline Road), 1 km east of Durham Regional Road 23. Watch for signs. Please dress appropriately, as it is generally cooler near the lakeshore, and bring binoculars if you have them.
