PUBLIC REVIEW ON THE PORT HOPE AREA LOW-LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE DISPOSAL PROJECT A federal Environmental Assessment Panel has been appointed by the federal Environment Minister Tom McMillan to consider proposals for the permanent safe disposal of low-level radioactive wastes from the Eldorado Resources Limited refinery, now stored at Welcome in Hope Township and Port Granby in the Town of Newcastle. Additionally, the panel will consider the disposal of historic radioactive wastes stored within the Town of Port Hope which are the responsibility of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. The disposal facility would also be used for future wastes generated by Eldorado. During 1986 and 1987 the panel will review proposals for sites and methods of disposal, taking into consideration the protection of both human health and the environment, now and in the future. It will also take into account directly-related socio-economic factors. As part of its review the panel will hold a series of public meetings in the area to gather facts and learn of any concerns. It will then present its conclusions and recommendations in a report to the federal Government which will make the final decision about the proposal. In the week of June 23,1986 meetings will be held in the Port Hope area to give interested parties an opportunity to present issues that should be studied during the review. These are called scoping meetings or workshops which serve to inform all Interested parties on the issues, early in the review process. Groups and government agencies normally are represented by a spokesperson. Dates, times, and locations will be announced shortly. Changes In a Lifetime This past Sunday I attended a party to celebrate my grandmother's grandmother's 75th birthday. After the excitement has subsided, I talked to the guest of honour about changes in her lifetime. Grandma was born in a farmhouse in Chandos Township Township on May 6, 1911. She was the second of five children. Children of her time had to create their own entertainment entertainment without radios, T.V.'s and other present day diversions. diversions. Grandma walked two miles to a one room school containing grades one to eight. She studied readin' and writin' and 'rithmetic, taught to the tune of a hickory stick. Each student had a small slate to write on, instead of notebooks. Grandma remembers seeing a car for the first time when she was seven or eight. Can you imagine that she has lived to see the first "moon- walk" live on television? Telephones, T.V.'s and radios (not to mention V.C.R.'s and computers) are just a few of the items that have become part of every household during her three quarters of a century. century. Of medical discoveries she cites pencillin as the most important to her. When I asked Grandma if life is better now than it was in the "good 'ol days" she laughingly replied "It's easier now but I enjoyed it just as much then."
