Big Babies Bring Crowds to Bowmanville Zoo Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 21. 198fi 9 Merry Makers Hold Closing Banquet and Presentations by Catherine Denny Raoul may not be the most appropriate name for a six week-old, 50 kilogram camel but with all the new arrivals at the Bowmanville Zoo there's not many names left to choose from. The homely little youngster youngster (sorry Raoul) is just one of numerous babies now being pampered at the local sanctuary including Tabatha and Endora, cuddly lion cubs which have just arrived from Mas- sachusettes; and three-day old jack rabbits. Haven't been down to see them yet? Well, you're missing missing a roaring good time! Just like human babies these guys really know how to entertain a crowd with their antics. Take Raoul, for example. One minute he's running and bouncing around like an over-grown jumping bean and the next minute he's snuggling up to his mom for affection. And let's not even discuss the hilarious way he likes to talk to his on-lookers. Yes, Raoul is indeed a proud subject with the zoo because, like his 13 barn mates, the little guy is just more proof of the Connel's good breeding techniques. "Ours are quality camels," explained Allan Connel, part-owner of the local historic historic site. "You can tell because because their humps don't flop over like they do on those ones at the Metro Zoo -- that's a sign of vitamin deficiency." deficiency." Sharing the limelight this week are, of course, none other than two week old cubs who have been delighting delighting young and old alike with their playful tumblings tumblings and adorable freckled faces. "They drink from a bottle now," said Karen Connell, "They only arrived last night and I can't count how many bottles they've gone through already. When the cubs get to solid foods the zoo will try to keep them on a vegetarian diet which means the lions will remain unaggressive for a longer period of time. When Tabatha and Endora do start eating meat they'll be sold to another zoo. "Most of the time they're pretty playful, but just like any child the lions still like to be cuddled," explained Karen. And lest we forget the five young ostriches, also a main attraction at the zoo. Although Although not quite as small, or huggable as the cubs, these six-month çlÿ sweeties are a definite must- to see. Raoul, the Bowmanville Zoo's six-week old camel, wasn't anxious to have his picture taken with Statesman Statesman Reporter Catherine Denny. This was shot just V* f. Alan Connell is pictured here teasing the playful six month-old ostriches which already stand over seven feet high. Zoo's list of "must-haves" are baby elephants. "Great tasting," says Allan Connell, who once cooked up a huge western omlette out of a cracked ostrich ostrich egg. "They're just like chicken eggs but far too large to use for anything but endettes." Next on the Bowmanville As for the zoo itself, things are progressing per usual with a lot of renovations renovations and additions being made to keep the animals safe and feeling at home, and the visitors more comfortable. comfortable. "Just because the zoo is up for sale doesn't mean that we stop improving this place," said Allan. "In fact the way things are looking we might not be selling for awhile and it's still our responsibility responsibility -- more like our pride to keep upgrading the facilities." So, attention to all animal lovers: even if you've already already been once this year the Bowmanville Zoo says "you ain't seen nothin' yet!" if you haven't visited them today.
