Best man was Dennis =55tbV Taking Offbeat Silhouettes Sometimes it's funny how the human mind works. When I was much younger and playing at the task of becoming a great creative photographer, I decided to manufacture a silhouette photograph - a stark black subject against a perfectly white background. I stretched a white sheet across an open doorway and placed a potted plant behind the sheet. Then I threw.some pholpfloods on the plant, causing the plant's shadow to fall on tlje sheet, which I photographed from the opposite sltfô'of ic^uuiway. t _ . . As I recall, it worked out pretty well. Looking back, though, I have to wonder why on earth I went to all that trouble. Anyone can take effective silhouette photos. If you shoot an auto-exposure camera-whether disc, 110, instantprint, or 35 mm - you've probably taken quite a few, yourself. Whether or not you did so Intentionally is another matter. You see, whenever you aim a light meter at a fairly dark subject set against a substantially lighter background, the light in the background "fools" the meter into thinking the subject Is well lighted. It signals the camera to the necessary aperture for the exposure. The result: accidental silhouette. Knowing this, you quickly grasp the method for eliminating accidental silhouettes. Simply set your adjustable camera's shutter speed to a slower-than-called-for' speed (or open the aperture wider than suggested). If you're using a non- adjustable camera, simply flip on the flash for daylight fill. That, too, will defeat accidental silhouettes. But how about those times when you come across a truly strong, graphic subject which would look well as a silhouette? Can you actually deliberately set out to take a silhouette photo? Well, you not only can, you should. The possibilities for silhouette shots are nearly endless. Bathers in a strongly reflective mountain stream, volleyball players on a white sand beach, jagged tree limbs against a bright sky - all might adapt well to high-contrast silhouette, shots. But don't overlook some of the less obvious possibilities. One of my favorite pastimes is snooping in old, abandoned barns (with the owners' permission, of course). You'd be amazed at the number of silhouette opportunities I find there. I find windows, cracks In the roof, holes In the roof, skylights, barn doors, vents - all kinds of openings beyond, which the bright outside waits. All I have to do then, of course, is "frame" an interesting subject against the opening. The photo accompanying this column is a good illustration. I recently came across a barn window Inside which hung several intriguing Implements. It was a natural. But, after snooping a little closer, I saw a bit of sunlight spilling onto the windowsill and illuminating some additional objects. Not wanting to lose these highlights, I used a handheld incidental light meter to give me the right reading. The result: silhouetted hanging implements with properly exposed objects on the windowsill. One word of caution when shooting against (or even through) old glass windows. They can be extremely dirty. That's part of their charm, of course. But, In the finished print, that dirt often shows up looking like UFOs - Unidentified Freaking Objectionables. If you want to get rid of them, you'll either have to wash the window before shooting (okay, okay-so you don't do windows!) or else get handy with a brush and some touch-up spotter, like Spotone, Berg, or McDonald. That can be a lot of work, but the results may well justify tho If you're looking lor a creative way to add impact to your photos, consider silhouettes. silhouettes.
