Scott Veals sent a towering shot over the left field fence and added a single, Mike Gallant added a double and a single and Rob Real had a single. The first game of the Kingston Kingston series was close. Mike Gallant went the distance on the mound, giving up six hits and six runs, striking out 2 and surrendering 3 bases on balls. The fourth inning saw the locals commit 7 errors accounting for the six runs on only 3 hits, Danny Annis contributed contributed a home-run, Kevin Smith a single, Mike Gallant a single, with other singles to David Fairey, Mike Smith and Scott Webster whose infield single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh accounted for the winning run. Scott Munro's double and single accounted for two R.B.I.'s. In the second game, the Canadian Tire crew got off to a flying start, scoring 11 runs on 7 hits in the first two innings, to go on to a 16-4 win. Chris Hall, Jeff Bartlett and Scott Munro shared the mound duties, giving up only 3 hits. Danny Annis had 3 singles and a double, Scott Webster a double and a single, David Fairey a double and a single, Scott Munro a single, and Scott Veals with a towering home-run high in the trees also added a triple. On Tues., May 27th Bowmanville Bowmanville M.S. Contracting Minor Mosquito All-Star soccer team went up against the Oshawa Soccer Club at Lakeshore Park in Oshawa. The game ended in a 3-3 draw. Considering that this Oshawa team was last season's all-round winners, Bowmanville did a terrific job and dominated the game. Oshawa scored after 10 mins, of play. Chris Yeo put in Bowmanville's first goal on a pass from Colin Taggart in the end zone. After Oshawa's second goal, Michael Suess tied the game on a shot from a direct kick. During the second half, Trever McDonald bulled one through, giving Bowmanville the lead. Oshawa finally scored the "tie" point on a penalty kick. The boys are all looking forward to another match with this team, preferably on home turf. On Wednesday, May 28, 1986, the Re/ Max Cornerstone Cornerstone Realty Major Pee Wee team travelled to Pickering. During, the first half, Bowmanville Bowmanville controlled the play creating many scoring opportunities opportunities but not being able to put the ball into the net, In the first 15 minutes Bowmanville Bowmanville never allowed the ball out of Pickering's end. At the end of the first half, Bow- manville's goalie had only touched the ball five times. Although the score was 2-0 for Pickering, one goal being a penalty shot. Bowmanville continued applying pressure but began to tire and allowed one more goal. In the second half the team is to be congratulated on a fine effort considering they were missing two key players and had only one substitute. This year the team has picked up several new players and with each game are building confidence confidence and team play. On Monday, May 26, 1986, the Bowmanville Lions had their first setback of the soccer soccer season losing to Newcastle 5-0. It was a good game for the Newcastle team as they took control of the game after three costly mistakes by the Lions' goalie. However, on Thursday, May 29, they upset the Orono team 1-0 in Orono. The defense, consisting mainly of Chris Baumhauer and Ian Robinson, kept Orono off the score sheet. ' Brent Huggins and Brian Ball helped set-up the only goal of the game which was scored by Nicholas DeFreitas. It was an excitng game played by both teams. Chris Paquette of the Lions had a great game, playing in the mid-field position. position. Bantam Girls Soccer Team Plays Oshawa Kick* In Season Opener On Thursday, May 29, the Bowmanville United Bantam Girls competitive soccer team travelled to Lakeview Park, Oshawa for their first match of the season against the Oshawa Kicks. From the opening whistle, it was apparent that the Bowmanville Bowmanville girls were in for a long night against the highly skilled and well-disciplined Kicks side. Oshawa jumped in front 2-0 before Kathy Coombes got one back on a hard blast from 30 yards. The score remained 2-1 until the half, thanks to the excellent net minding of Kristy Dykstra and the steady work of the fullbacks led by Catherine Acheson. Oshawa added 3 goals in the second half to make the final 5-1, a respectable result as the Bowmanville girls played with a lot of heart and aggressiveness. aggressiveness. They are already looking forward to the return match in Bowmanville on July 17th. Hard working winger Kathy Coombes, who spearheaded the Bowmanville attack, was carried from the field in the second half with a knee injury. She deserves special mention. Hopefully, she will be back in ' action for the next game, - Thursday, June 5th, 6:30 at the Bowmanville High School against Pickering. Grahflm's Bantam Girls By 10:30 Saturday morning, a large number of youngsters had already taken advantage of the Bowmanville Optimist Club's offer of free kites at a Kite Rodeo held in the Lord Elgin Schoolyard. The object of the day was to provide a kite to every kid who wanted to fly one. Legion Bentems Win Two, Lose Two played a steady game to hold the Ajax club off the score sheet after the second inning. In his first outing, Steve Bizi pitched well, shutting out the Ajax batters for 5 innings in relief of starter Jason Kiely, brought up from the Pee Wee squad along with Brennan Donohue and Martin D'Entre- mont. Dennis and Baumhauer picked up 2 hits apiece in the afternoon with single hits going to Jeff Woodlock, Geoff Noyes, Paul Woodlock and Craig Archer. Kevin Maynard and Jeff Woodlock led the 11 hit attack, aided by a fine defensive play as Steve Bizi and Dean Baumhauer Baumhauer combined to throw out the potential tying run at the plate. On Saturday, a visit to Ajax saw the Legion Bantams split, losing a 7-6 heartbreaker in the last inning as Paul Wood- lock took his first loss of the year in relief of Craig Archer. But, in the second game, Cec Stephenson led the way, going 3 for 3 at the plate as well as knocking in 3 runs on the way to a 8-3 victory. The score was 4-3 in favour of the visitors entering the last inning and a 4-run rally combined combined with some good defence sealed the victory. Outfielders John Duczmalewski, Greg Portelance and Nick Dennis On May 22, Graham's IGA travelled to Pickering in the driving rain to open its 1986 Durham Girls' Soccer League season. Unfortunately, all the girls brought back were wet feet, as they lost a close game in the final two minutes by a 2-1 score. All the girls played well for Graham's with Jessica Knoop scoring the lone goal. On May 29th, the team played to a 0-0 draw against Ajax in their first home game. Defensively the girls shone, especially in the second half when they limited Ajax to only one shot on goal. Special mention mention should be made of our goaltenders Desiree Flonk and Susan McCullough and of Carolyn Watters, playing her first game at defense. Offensively, Graham's kept the pressure on Ajax, only to be frustrated again and again by their goalie and defense. Melanie Vandergaast and Christina Thrasher were particularly particularly strong on the attack. All the girls played a strong game and are to be congratulated congratulated for their fine display display of soccer skills. The members of this year's Graham's IGA Mosquito Girls team are Kim Bates, Kathy Clements, Desiree Flonk, Jessica Hull, Christine Kiely, Jessica Knoop, Jennifer Lyle, Sharon McAleese, Susan McCullough, Allison Morris, Andrea Slocombe, Christina Thrasher, Melanie Vandergaast, Vandergaast, Carolyn Watters, Christine Christine West and Sharon Wright.
