The game started out with both clubs scoring four runs in the first inning and after six innings of play the Lakers were losing to Whitby by the score of 10 to 9. During the seventh and eighth innings the Lakers committed a number of costly errors that saw Whitby push eight runs across in the last two innings. Doug Rickard started on the mound for the Lakers and was relieved by John Robinson at the end of the sixth inning. The big guns for Whitby were Bob Artner, Dave Sorietti, Greg Macisaac, Tom Spaxman and Jim Scherer. The standouts for the Lakers were John Robinson, Jeff Fox and Allan Farrow the Laker catcher. Outfielder Craig Hornby hit a home run for the Lakers, his second of the season. Markham defeated the Newcastle Newcastle Lakers 7 to 5 in a hard fought Eastern Ontario Senior Baseball League game played at Newcastle Village Park on Sunday afternoon. The Markahm Ball Club jumped into the lead with four runs in the second inning and finally the Lakers whittled down the lead and tied the score at four-all at the end of the sixth inning. The Lakers went ahead in the seventh inning, leading 5 to 4, but Markham scored three runs in the top of the eighth to go ahead again 7 to 5. John Robinson started on the mound for the Lakers and was relieved by Jeff Edmun- son at the start of the eighth inning. Paul Singleton started for Markham and was relieved by Lawrence Slavin in the eighth inning. The. f Newcastle ; Lakers played a good steady game, however ; their downfall was too many players left on the bases. Doug Rickard and catcher A1 Farrow were definitely standouts for the Lakers. Doug Rickard banged out a home run, while Jeff Edmundson, Mark Luxton, Ken Gilmer played well for the losers. Mark Munro, Scott Friars, Paul Singleton and Ken Anderson were the pick of the winners. The Newcastle Lakers are home to Kendal Eagles on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Oshawa on Sunday afternoon, also at 1:00 p.m. Following the rain last Wednesday, the Soper Creek ball diamond was not in too good shape for anything but mud wrestling, certainly not baseball. But, Harey Webster, mounted on this three wheeler, was doing his utmost to drag away all the wet spots so the game with Port Hope could be played. B.H.S. Junior Orioles Pound Port Hope The Cowan Pontiac, L & L Tool Junior Orioles picked up a very impressive 4-0 win in Port Hope on the night of Monday', June 9th. . The action started in the second inning when John Mutton Mutton drilled a single by the . shortstop. Mutton then went to second on a passed ball. After Phil Bird was called out on a controversial strike three, Scott McLeod ripped a double down the left field line scoring Mutton. With McLeod on third Jon Clieff knocked him in with a sacrifice fly. The action did not heat up again until the ninth inning when "Nugget" McLeod. broke the ice with a single. McLeod went to third on a single by Glen German and German then preceded to steal second with blinding speed. With men on second and third, Edward Bird bounced a single into centre scoring both McLeod and German, German, • Collecting hits for Bowmanville Bowmanville were Edward Bird, Mutton, Mutton, McLeod, Austin, Nash, Michelson, German, and Philip Bird. The Cowan Pontiac Pontiac offensive star of the game was "Nugget" McLeod as he had a double, single and the game winning R.B.l. Bowmanville had 10 hits but the story of the game was the Bowmanville defence as they did not make an error due to the hard practice that coaches Doug Ritchie, Kel Bamsey and George Michelson nut the Orioles through on Sunday. The L & L Tool defensive star of the game was Chris Michelson as he went the dis tance striking out nine and only allowing three hits. Chris blew them away all game for his first win of the season. Honourable mention goes to Edward Bird who made a spectacular diving catch to end the game and Chuck Nash who played a solid right field. Bowmanville Juniors Throw Game Away to Peterborough The Cowan Pontiac, L & L Tool Junior Orioles' winning streak was stopped by Peterborough Peterborough on Wednesday, June 11th by a score of 10-6. Glen German started off for the Orioles and promptly crushed a single into centre- field. After Bruce Austin put runners on first and third with a single, rookie of the year hopeful Troy Foster drove German in with a solid single. Austin scored Bowmanville's final run of the inning on a Peterborough error, The Orioles started off the second inning strong also as Johnny Stevenson reached base on an error. Jon Clieff walked, moving Stevenson to second but Stevenson injured his knee on the run to second and had to be replaced by Brad Bamsey. The next batter was Bruce Austin and he continued continued his torrid hitting assault by drilling a double into right scoring Bamsey. Bowmanville did not score again until the sixth inning when "Nugget" McLeod started off with a single, After Bamsey walked Jon Clieff broke out of his slump with a double down the left field line scoring McLeod and Bamsey. In the eightn inning Chris Michelson scored Bowmanville's Bowmanville's final run of the game after he reached base on an error and Bamsey hit a single. The L & L offensive star of the game was Bruce Austin with a single, double and one R.B.l. Honourable mention' goes to Jon Clieff who had a double, walk, and two R.B.l.'s. ' Collecting hits for the Orioles were German, Austin, Foster, McLeod, Bamsey and Clieff. . The story of the game again was the Oriole defence or lack of defence as Peterborough scored ten runs on only five hits, This reporter takes off his hat to Chris Moffat as he lasted four innings of very sloppy defence. The Cowan Pontiac defensive defensive star of the game goes to John Mutton. Due to a recent lack of save opportunities, Doug Ritchie brought his stopper in to give him some work and John struck out three in three innings and picked two baserunners off of third. Mutton proved to the Peterborough batters that you can't hit what you can't see. Honourable mention goes to Chris Michelson as he played an outstanding first base. Girls travelling travelling to Pickering for another encounter with their soccer club, this time against the Cosmos. Unfortunately, all we came back with was wet feet (again!) as Graham's was outscored 4-0. The first three goals were primarily the result of defensive defensive lapses on the part of the girls as they were unable to keep the ball out of our end of the field. They were also the result of some interesting interpretations of the offside rule by the referee. (I have some sympathy for the way the Soviets felt after their loss to Belgium in the second round of the World Cup!) Graham's play tightened up considerably in the second half with Christina Thrasher moving into goal and doing a superb job, limiting the Cosmos Cosmos to only 1 goal! Offensively, the girls were continually frustrated by the strong clearing kicks of the Pickering ■ midfielders and defense: They prevented Graham's from keeping sustained sustained pressure on the Cosmos. Cosmos. Despite this, Jessica Hull and Kim Bates did make several good rushes. With this loss. Graham's head into their next home contest against Whitby oil Wednesday, June 18, with an 0-1-2 record. Good luck in this game, girls!
