Better Weather Favors Lawn Bowling Canadian Tire Midgets Still Continue Their Winning Ways On Tuesday, July 8th at Orono Park, the Canadian Tire Midgets struck for 12 hits to defeat their hosts from Orono by a score of 10-3 in 8 innings. David Fairey led the way with a triple and a single and earned 4 R.B.I.'s, Scott Veals smacked a three-bagger and earned 2 R.B.I.'s. Scott Munro added a triple of his own along with a single and an R.B.I. Dan Annis notched a double and a single. Other singles came off the bats of Scott Webster (1), Mike Lugtenburg (2) and Rob Real (2). Defensively, the south-paw Hall faced 38 batters, walking 8, striking- out 5 and allowing 6 hits and 1 earned run. His teammates were there with very capable support, and helped preserve the win, Friday, July 11th, the Midgets Midgets travelled to Little Britain and were sorry they did. Little Britain got to 3 Bowmanville pitchers for 14 hits and 10 runs, while the Bowmanville bats were silenced except for 6 hits and 4 runs. Scott Veals and Scott Webster each tagged 4 triple, while Mike Lugtenburg, Scott Munro, Scott Webster and Mike Gallant all singled once. Monday, July 14th saw the re-match, as the Bowmanville Canadian Tire Midgets hosted Little Britain at Soper Creek. This was a much better contest, contest, and almost was a classic. Unfortunately, unsportsmanlike unsportsmanlike language and conduct by members of both teams marred a well-played game. The Canadian Tire group were held again to only 6 hits and scored only 3 runs, but that was all they needed as they nipped Little Britain 3-2. Dan Annis, Kevin Smith and Scott Veals, each struck for a double, Kevin Smith and Scott for a double. Kevin Smith also had a single, along with Mike Gallant and Chris Hall. The defensive effort was 100 per cent better than the previous game, with no substitutes on the bench it was sink or swim. And swim they did. Chris Hall performed the mound duties and helped his own cause with 6 strike-outs and only 1 walk and 6 hits. The defense behind him was almost impeccable and again a superb team effort resulted in victory. A busy week continued on Tuesday, July 15th in Port Hope, with the Bowmanville Midgets bowing 9-8 to their hosts, Scott Veals was a stand out as he went 4 for 4 with a triple, double and 2 singles as well as 1 walk, Kevin Smith was no slouch, as he notched 3 singles in 5 trips to the plate, one of which was a bunt. Mike Smith contributed a double and a single, Scott Munro singled twice and Rob Real once to round out the offence at 12 hits. Michelle Gallant went the distance on the mound for Bowmanville, giving up 14 hits 9 runs, and 3 walks, and suffered the loss, giving up 6 earned runs and also recorded 6 "K's" in this valiant effort. Cobourg was the next stop, on Thursday, July 17th. The Canadian Tire Midgets certainly certainly knew they were in a ball game, as Cobourg took them 10 innings before they decided the outcome of 5-4 in favour of Bowmanville. Scott Veals was the offensive leader again with 4 singles in 5 at bats. Dan Annis and Jeff Bartlett contributed contributed 2 singles in each while Scott Munro, Mike Gallant, and Mike Lugtenburg added 1 single each. A superb team effort again was responsible for another strong appearance by Lefty Hall. "Foyer" fanned 9. batters, allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and 4 earned runs to notch his 2nd win in as many games. A long stretch was terminated terminated on Saturday, July 19th at Soper Creek with another re-match, this time between Bowmanville's Canadian Tire Midgets and Port Hope, and the Canadian Tire crowd came through again with their 5th win in 6 starts. They scored 14 runs on' just 11 hits to outscore Port Hope 14-10. Dan Annis had a busy afternoon afternoon on the bases, striking for 2 singles and drawing 2 walks which set the speedster up for 4 runs. Scott Veals only went 1 for 4, but the 1 hit was very timely, as he exploded and sent the unsuspecting pitch over the left field fence for a 3-run shot that gave his team a 5 run lead in the 6th inning. Kevin Smith recorded a triple and a single; while Scott Munro stroked 2 singles, and Mike Gallant, Jeff Bartlett, Mike Smith and Tim Smith each added a single of their own. A strong performance by Mike Gallant in position No. 1 gave Bowmanville the edge. Mike hurled six and two-thirds innings allowing 6 earned runs on 9 hits and 2 walks. Chris Hall relieved Mike and earned the save the hard way. He was the victim of Port Hope's 3rd home-run of the game which narrowed the gap to 4 runs, Chris allowed 3 hits in all plus 1 walk and 1 strike-out in one and one-third innings. Keep up the good work team! Good play and good sportsmanship make a good team and lots of fun. by AbMavin After a rainy June and part of July, we finally got some lawn bowling weather. Heels of Lindsay with a score of 17. Besides these out of town scores we also had Jitneys on Tuesday, July 15th and Thursday, Thursday, July 17th. The Tuesday Jitney was well attended and it was good to see so many new members out in attendance on the greens. Although the turnabout turnabout in Oshawa was rained out on the 17th of July, the sun shone in the afternoon and we were able to hold our regular Jitney on Thursday night with another large crowd in attendance. attendance. It's good to see the concern felt by the bowlers about the absence of some of our members; Mabel, Mavin strained her back and her hip and will be unable to bowl in the Carter, but hopes to be back for the rest of thé season. Gwen Coombes has been entertaining visitors ,'of Les Coombes who are from England and Wales but hopes to be back bowling next week.
