10 The Canadian Statesman. Howmanville. August 6. 1986 Patching Arena Roof NeededMoreThan Paint by Rob Savage The Darlington Sports Centre may not be getting getting a new paint job. The decision to paint the centre was referred back to staff during last week's town council meeting after considerable considerable debate about the need for such work. The report to council from Purchasing and Community Services had recommended that D.W. Building Services be awarded the painting contract. The company had offered to do the work for $12,800. Some councillors felt the work should be delayed delayed until more important important concerns were handled first. "We're paying a lot of money to paint the outside outside of a sports centre and I really don't see why," said Councillor Ann Cowman. She said patching some leaks in the roof would be more appropriate appropriate at this time. "And that isn't in the budget until 1989," she said. "I'm speaking of priorities and we need to get those straight." Councillor Diane Hamre added that the report report from community services didn't give many reasons for the work. She said preventive preventive maintenance work is something which needs a lot of consideration. "It isn't something you can just start overnight," she said. Community Services Director Jan Devantier said the work is necessary, necessary, since the building's exterior "is deteriorating deteriorating extremely rapidly." He said the front portion portion of the building had already been painted and that he was seeking to have the remainder painted. He also reminded reminded council the work had been approved in last Spring's budget. "It is something that is going to have to be done in the very near future," he said. He did admit, however, however, that the leaks in the roof were a serious problem. problem. And leaving the job until a later date probably probably wouldn't make it more expensive, he said. Councillor Cowman then said that it should be considered how long the paint work would last, and argued it would be wrong to spend the money now. "It doesn't make sense to me," she said. Elizabeth ville Our Church services were held at Ganaraska Woods, Garden Hill on Sunday with a good turnout. Dr. Sneyd took over the service and talked to us in a very informal way. He told of various episodes in his life, telling the first time he spoke at Welcome as a student sixty years ago and now he is speaking to the charge again. He hoped we would remember his words the same length of time in the future. Bible scripture scripture was John 10:17-30 telling of Jesus explaining to the people that he was the Messiah but they refused to believe. He answers that my sheep listen to my voice, I know them and they follow me, I give them eternal life and they shall never die. Dr. Sneyd told of God speaking to his people if we would only listen but we don't. He told of a religious group in the thirties, an Oxford group that used to meditate for one hour and put down things they would try to do to be better Christians and then the group would discuss that and improve it. Finally, they'd settle with four projects, projects, absolute honest, unselfishness, unselfishness, purity, and loving. Does God talk to us? Like the sheep if we would only listen, we would follow him. Hymns were chosen by the congregation. congregation. After our service, we had fruit bread and coffee. Following our service a group of seniors from a Church Mission in Toronto were holidaying there and they were having their service BUSINESS DIRECTORY ACCOUNTANCY WILLIAM C. HALL B.Comm.
