When I was very young (perhaps eleven or twelve) my father took me to visit my older brother who was married and living in Windsor, Windsor, Ontario. While there, they took me to the old Briggs Stadium in Detroit to see a Major league baseball game between the Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Athletics, Athletics, managed by the famous Connie Mack. We rode through the Windsor tunnel on a city bus, then on to a streetcar, streetcar, to the Stadium. There was a double-header that day and some of the stars of the Tigers were - Mickey Cochrane, Cochrane, catching - "School-boy" Rowe and Tommy Bridges, pitching - Rugy York, Hank Greenberg, Billy Rogell and Charlie Tenringer in the infield infield - "Goose" Gosling and Pete Fox in the outfield. Jimmy Foxy was the hitting star, for the Philadelphia Athletics. When we came out of the stadium after the second game, newsboys were selling copies of the Detroit Free Press. On the front page was a picture of Jimmy Foxy hitting a home-run, which he had hit in the first game of the double- header. I couldn't believe my eyes, When we finally got onto a streetcar to take us back to the Windsor Tunnel, we were so packed in, my brother was unable to get on. We were packed in, like sardines. I can still see my brother, running along the street, beside the streetcar, to make sure wè didn't get lost. Strange, isn't it, how little things remain in your memory many years later. The Detroit Tigers went on that year, to win the World Series of baseball. Ir . His collection dates back to the late 1800's, and he has hundreds of photos which he keeps on file. The Newcastle Village resident resident says some day he might try to have his photos stored in a library or museum. But for now he simply has to work on trying to organize organize his collection. He currently has many negatives negatives he has taken himself which are waiting to have prints made from them. He has been unable to get to them because of his daughter's daughter's wedding plans. She will be married this Saturday, Saturday, in the Gordon's backyard. backyard. "I have to leave my hobby," he says. Once the wedding is over, he hopes to return to working working on the photos. Besides needing to catch up on his prints, he also wants to make his collection better organized. "I hope some day that I can do a filing system," system," he said. And he plans to keep collecting collecting photos. Mr. Gordon's collection was started by Willy Chaplain Chaplain and El (red Ellsworth in the 1800's, The photography oflocal sites in the Newcastle Newcastle area continued in 1913 by Dr. Jack Butter. Eventually, many of them were collected by Cecil Car- veth, a local historian. Mr. Gordon met Mr. Carveth when he moved to Newcastle Newcastle from Oshawa in 1968, and the two started a friendship based on their common interests. "I was always a history buff," Mr. Gordon said. "He told me a lot of stories and showed me some pictures he had," When Mr. Carveth passed away in 1977, Mr. Gordon inherited inherited the photos and artifacts artifacts Mr. Carveth had assembled. assembled. He now shoots photos of historic sites himself, and goes to some of the older residents residents in Newcastle looking looking for old photos that can be recreated into new ones. Mr. Gordon has built a machine which lets him take pictures of the old photos. The machine uses an old 35 mm camera and has four lights, along with a stand for the picture he is shooting. His camera has key rings so he can shoot large pictures of very small objects and he has a slide which lets him move the camera towards or away from the picture. He says he would eventually eventually like to develop a portable portable version of this machine so he could then take the photos at the homes of the people he visits. He also has a few pictures he would like to get his hands on. One is of the Masonic Lodge from 1846, since they have lost their records records twice in fires. "That is something I would really like to get pictures of," he said. In fact, the Jan. 20, 1896 fire in Newcastle is responsible responsible for many of the problems problems Mr. Gordon faces in trying to find pictures. The fire, which destroyed a whole block, started at the Royal York Hotel (now known as Buster's), and wiped out many of the buildings around it. Mr. Gordon said many old plates were broken or destroyed destroyed during that period. He's also looking forward to taking a picture of a man repairing the steeple at the United Church in Newcastle. Newcastle. He currently has a picture picture of that steeple being repaired in 1907 and a mod-, era picture would be an interesting interesting contrast. "I'm just holding out until I see what they're going to do," he said. And he would like to get a shot of the grain elevator that once stood at the Grand Trunk railway. That elevator was built by Mr. Carveth's grandfather after a dispute with the harbor people forced him to go to the Grand Trunk people for permission to build. Mr. Gordon said most of the pictures have a similar history, and should give a pretty telling story of the Newcastle area once they're organized. Some of his pictures have already been used to advance advance some historical stories. The United Church used some of his pictures for a book they produced on their history, and the Bowmanville Bowmanville history book entitled entitled "Picture the Way We Were" used a few pictures for the chapter on Newcastle. Newcastle. But much of what is owned by Mr. Gordon remains remains unseen by the general general public. Ilis historical collection also contains many artifacts of local history, history, including a bike known as the "Silver Ribbon" Ribbon" which has a wooden rim made by the Bowmanville Bowmanville Cycle Wood Rim Co. in 1897. He also has many other antiques, and has taken a particular interest in the Massey-Harris Co. which began back in 1847 before the Masseys moved to Toronto. Toronto. He says, however, that any collection made from his photos or artifacts would only have a local in- "They wouldn't be of much value to anybody outside outside of this area."
