The Majorettes were also recently awarded a second place at the Peterborough Peterborough Exhibition. The Bluettes included: Patsy Blake, Diana Thertell, Mary Ann Doyle, Brenda Henning, Henning, Shirley Sheehan, Maureen Tighe and Avelyn. Lycett of Bowmanville. From Oshawa were Leslyri Chamberlin, Pamela Young, Diane Yurkowski, Mary Newell and Diane Shaw. The girls were instructed by Irenie Harvey of Oshawa. FLASHBACK -- 10 YEARS AGO -- Land has been donated by Milani and Milani, developer, for a new park to be built in Waverley. The four acre temporary park site presently includes a baseball diamond, a swing set and other pieces of playground equipment. The park is being built by the Town of Newcastle Recreation Recreation Department, including Robert Payne, Scott Itudell, Jack Mutton and Dave Potter. TEAMS NEEDED -- On Saturday, September 13, and Sunday, September 14,1986, the Burketon Park Board is holding a mixed lob ball tournament. LOB BALL CHAMPS -- The Maranatha Christian Reformed Reformed Church Lob ball team held a Christian Men's invitational tournament on the weekend of August 8 and 9. First place went to Faith Baptist in Oshawa. Second place was held by Booth, Uxbridge, and the consolation champs were Liberty Pentecostal in Bow- manville. GOOD BROTHERS -- Ron Hope and his Improvement Committee are holding a Jamboree on September 13 at the Newcastle Village Arena. The committee project is to raise funds to replace the Arena floors. You can dance the evening away to the sounds of the Good Brothers and the Harvest Band while supporting your local Arena. FUN IN THE SUN -- The United Way Second Annual Kick-Off Awareness hosted by the Oshawa-Whitby- Newcastle United Way Committee of General Motors will take place on September 12 and 13 at the Oshawa Shopping Centre. A bike parade and rodeo will run from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Friday. The Canadian Tire Midgets did it again on Saturday... they won an Ontario championship in Waterloo by defeating Cottam in two games and by Harvey Webster In a oall park in Waterloo, Stadium, the Canadian Tire Midgets took two consecutive games from Cottam to win the All-Ontario "C" Baseball Championship on the weekend. weekend. The first game got underway underway at 1:15 on Saturday with our boys jumping to a quick 3-0 lead on hits by Kevin Smith, Mike Hallant, Mike Smith and Scott Veals. They added 3 more in both the second and third, while Mike Hallant retired Cottam in order in their first three innings. Mike only allowed 2 Hits and one run over theTirst six innings, however, he ran into some hungry batters in the 7th when he gave up 2 hits and 3 bases on balls for 5 runs. David Fairey came on in relief and he in turn was relieved by Chris Hall in the 8th who shut down the bats to save the game. After having a 11-1 lead, Bowmanville were hard pressed to come out with a 15-10 win at Cottam would not give up. Kevin Smith was the leader at the plate with 4 bunt singles and 2 R.B.I.'s. The number six spot in the batting order was extremely productive productive as Mike Smith had 2 singles before he was replaced in the fifth by Michael Houston who followed with 3 consective singles. Mike Gallant con tributed to the offense with 3 singles and 2 R.B.I's. Scott Veals had 2 singles, with Annis, Tim Smith, Paul Gallant, adding one each. Scott Webster put one over the , warning track (300') reached home but was sent back to sebond as the ball rolled into the soccer net 380' away. Dan Annis walked 3 times and scored 3 runs, while David Fairey walked twice scoring twice. After a half-hour rest, the two teams returned to the diamond again. It soon became became apparent that this was a new ball game. Chris Hall got off to a good start on the mound over 3 2/3 innings giving up 2 hits, and one rufi; striking out 3 until the persistent boys from Cottam with two walks a single and two doubles picked up 4 runs, when Jeff Bartlett took over the mound. Cottam had picked up one run in the first, which was overcome in the third on singles by Kevin Smith, Mike Gallant, a fielder's choice by Webster and a two run double by Bârtlett to take a 3-1 lead. After Cottam got their 4- runs in the 4th, the Canadian Tire crew picked up 3 of their own on doubles by Hall and Munro and a walk by Annis. Then, it was off to the nearest restaurant for pizzas to satisfy hungry appetites. The seventh proved to be the key inning for our midgets as Jeff Bartlett singled and Veals tripled to tie the score. Chris Hall supplied the championship championship R.B.I. with a single to right field, bringing in Veals for a 8-7 lead. Two errors in the eighth caused . some anxious moments but strong pitching from "Gootch" maintained the lead. Jeff Bartlett, David Fairey, Dan Annis and Scott Veals supplied necessary defence for n 1 9 3 ninpf.h and the Gold Medallions. The eight Bowmanville runs were scored by 8 different players to illustrate the balance and depth of our team. In Jeff Bartletts 5 2/3 innings he allowed 2 runs on 3 hits struck out 3 and allowed 3 bases on balls.
