NEWS] : by Merrllee Brown, Editor 'School Days, school days Dear old golden rule days reading and writing and 'rithmetic sung to the tune of a hickory stick.' Perhaps the 'school days' of the popular song are not so familiar these days. Students now may study drafting, computer computer science and electronic music along with their reading and writing and 'rithmetic. The days of corporal punishment punishment to the tune of a hickory stick have long gone by. But for all these changes, 'back to school' means as much to the students of today as it did to those of days gone by. Last Tuesday, September the 2nd over one thousand students with their brand new School supplies and sighs for the last fleeting days of summer summer returned to the halls of Bowmanville High School. For several hundred of these students it was their first day at B.H.S., crammed with so many unfamiliar faces and a labyrinth of school corridors to conquer. Wide-eyed perpetually perpetually shorter-than-last- year' grade nines waited in long lines to receive their timetables, smiles from fellow freshmen and the evaluation of the seniors. I returned to B.H.S. this year just as wide-eyed and freshfaced as the grade nines after my year-long hiatus in Spain. The formerly all-too- familiar corridors of the school were not so familiar. Changes had occurred. The library had been totally renovated renovated with comfortable sofas, lamps and plants added. I thought I had walked into our family living room! And there were scads of new grade nines and not-so-new. grade tens whom I did not recognize. I had spent 3 or 4 years at B.H.S. to find I knew almost no one. Well, not quite. As with all students, I quickly found my friends and caught up on the summer's (and year's for that matter) happenings. The grade 13's sized up the grade nines and the grade nines sized up the grade thirteens, before proceeding to class. And thus the 1986-87 school year commences. All the familiar occurrences of fall: the buying of books, a plethora of pens, pencils and paper and endless forms for parents to sign. The Student Services Department is swamped by last-minute changes of mind. I.D. card photos are being taken by dedicated Students' Council workers. Football and other team tryouts are being held. Band practices and play rehearsals commence. And so do the editions of the B.H.S. News. This year, Laura Silver, last year's editor, and I have decided decided to co-edit the B.H.S. News.
