SOUTH OSHAWA, ONTARIO L1H4G3 728-0203 Chnrltnblo Roglstrotlon No. 03G9160-05-13 Mr. Robert R. MacDonald R.R.l Newtonville, Ontario LOA 1J0 September 22,1986 Dear Mr. James: It was, indeed, with mixed emotions that I received the news that Eldorado Nuclear Resources Limited had chosen the Tyrone site rather than the Starkville site, the said site to be presented at the hearings along with Wesleyville. While ecstatic to find that the radioactive radioactive waste was no longer going to be in my immediate backyard, I was also distraught distraught to think it could still be in my community's backyard. I also find myself feeling guilty because of my relief, knowing that those people of Tyrone are now having to live with an even greater and more intense stress than that which I have been experiencing for the past month. This was the kind of stress, pressure and anger which words do no justice! These people have my heartfelt sympathy, and support. While sympathy is good, it is not enough! We must continue to fight, as we know the people of Tyrone would have continued continued to do had Starkville been chosen instead. If we persevere and do stop Eldorado from establishing a nuclear waste site at Tyrone, we must also turn our attentions attentions to Wesleyville. These people ai;e also our neighbors and this particular site is even closer to Lake Ontario - a matter of great concern to you, me and our children for thousands of years to come. Southern Ontario, its growing population and our shared water supply must be protected. protected. Apathy is simply not acceptable from the rest of the residents of the Town of Newcastle Newcastle and Durham Region. Write your elected representatives, representatives, the Prime Minister, and Eldorado - sign petitions and make contributions. A determined and vocal populus will not be denied. If we all yell loud and long enought, we yell long and loud enough, we will be heard. Before you finish this letter and go on with your life, without without another thought on the subject, be made aware that this could have just as well been your backyard. Also remember, that if the proposal proposal goes ahead at Tyrone, Eldorado is going to have to transport 60,000 truckloads of radioactive waste from Welcome Welcome and Port Granby. Maybe they will want to haul it past your front door. Eldorado's historic waste, - future waste and contempt for our lives is not something we should have to tolerate. If proper and safe disposal of nuclear waste (if at all possible) possible) is so expensive, perhaps nuclear fuel is not a viable alternative. This Crown Corporation has shown itself to be insensitive and irresponsible irresponsible to both human life and the environment in the past. There is no reason to believe they have changed. If it is so safe to dispose of, maybe they can bury it at 24 Sussex Drive, Ottawa! Yours truly, Robert R. MacDonald Central School News Reports Central P. S. Report Visitors at Central School One day, Dr. Tushingham came to Central School, and some of our news paper club members interviewed him. He is the director of Education for the Northumberland Newcastle Newcastle Board of Education. He said that he will visit 57 schools and is the leader over all these schools. He works in the board office in Cobourg, and makes sure that everything everything runs properly. He is in charge of all the teachers. He came to Central to meet the teachers and to see the classes and how work was going. He told us that in his spare time he likes to play golf, racquet ball and most of all to read. I was afraid at first to interview Dr. Tushingham but he was very funny and nice to talk with.
