On Thursday, victory. Red Eagles Lose Two to Panthers by DanMoriarity The Cowan Pontiac Bowmanville Bowmanville Eagles played two games against the Port Hope Panthers this past week in a rematch of last year's first round playoff matchup in which Port Hope surprised the Eagles, who were heavily, favored, by winning the series 4 games to 1. Round 1 of the rematch was in Port Hope on Thursday evening where the home team prevailed by a score of 9-2. The Eagles, however, were playing without the services of many of their top players and, Sunday evening's game would give a much better idea of the teams relative strengths. The Panthers drew first blood on a short-handed goal early in'the game when Shawn Kelly fired.-®-; hard shot just inside the post' to beat Eagle netminder Travis Martin. Scott Heard tied the score at the 14:29 mark with assists going to John Young and Kelly Armstrong. Newcastle Honors Golf Club Winners Kelly Balson gave the home team a 2-1 lead just 31 seconds into the second period. Gord Rodgers set Balson up all alone in front of the net and Kelly merely waited for Panther goalie Guy Foster to go down, skated around him and deposited the puck into the empty net. A defensive miscue allowed two Panther forwards to go in on goal alone and tie the game at the 8:24 mark of the second period. Scott Heard scored what appeared to be the winning goal for Bowmanville with 7 and a half minutes left in the game with a bullet drive just inside the post on a pass from Bob McCann. So far this year the achilles heal of the Eagles has been defence and this game was no exception. Leading Leading with less than two minutes remaining, the Eagles could not hang on, allowing two goals to snatch defeat from, the jaws of victory by a score. of 4-3. It was, however, a fairly solid performance for the team just three games into the exhibition season. The Eagles' next home game is on Sunday at 7:30 p.m., with away games in Cobourg and Little Britain earliei; in the week.
