UNITED CHURCH NEWS On Saturday, October 11, Rev. Donald Stiles officiated officiated at the Little- Brough wedding in Newcastle Newcastle United Church. On Sunday, October 12th, the choir of Newcastle United Church rendered the anthem, Sing to the Lord of Harvest. Mr. Kenneth Boyd read the scripture from Philippians 4 and Rev. Donald Stiles preached the sermon, But Thanks Be To God. On Sunday, October 19th, Evelyn McLachlan, from Queen's Theological College, College, will be guest speaker. On Monday, October 20, the UCW General Meeting will be held at the church. Mrs. Barbara Catto will be the guest speaker. Golden Harvest Craft and Bake Sale is Saturday, October October 18 at the Church. Youth Club for Teens begins begins Sun, Oct. 19, with Cathy Labrie leader. The first Hampton Beavers once again planted their pumpkin seeds last spring. As you can see, most of them grew and they produced over 350 pumpkins. On October 18 the Beaver group will be holding a sale on Taunton Road, between Highway 57 and Scugog Road where donations will be accepted in return for a pumpkin. The event will run from nine a.m. to three p.m. Yelverton Happenings Fast ball in this immediate area has almost gone the way of the Dodo Bird or Horse and Buggy due to the competition of Lob Ball, slow pitch etc. However, a number of local players have continued to play in a fast ball league in Oshawa and managed to win the trophy for top team last Sun. evening. Their team was sponsored by Remax and coached I believe by Bob Marsh. Some of the local players included Yelvertons George McCullough plus local area players Donnie and Wayne Timms, Harvey Hamilton, Steve McGill and the Fallis brothers of Ponty- pool. Congratulations are extended extended to the winners. Moose hunting season open- • ed this week. Mr. George McCullough McCullough is one of the local hunters participating. Belated congratulations are extended to Mr. Walter Kerr who recently observed his 80th birthday by attending a night of horse racing at Kawartha Downs with several of his nephews and nieces. Walter has always been keenly interested interested in sports with possibly his greatest interest being hard ball. In his earlier years, Walter was an active player on several Yelverton hard ball teams and contributed with his skill and natural ability to the winning of two north Durham League trophies. We join Walter's many friends and relatives in wishing this quiet and unassuming chap many more happy healthy years. Another local resident who joined the ranks of the "octogenarian" was Mr. Ted Spenceley who quietly observed observed his 80th birthday with close relatives and friends last July. The occasion was the observation of Trevor's birthday. Our daughter Mona was pleasantly surprised to get a phone call this weekend from Marlene Goslin formerly of Lindsay now stationed at the Dew Line at Alert, Greenland. Thanksgiving church service service at Yelverton on Sunday a.m. though reasonably well attended, did not burst the church walls out at the seams from overcrowding. Despite the fact that we Canadians, be we Ontarians, Yelvertonians or whatever, enjoy one of the highest living standards in the world, we ! are as a rule hesitant hesitant to give thanks for our blessings and accept our good fortune as a God given right. We were likewise pleased to have Ruth and Ralph Malcolm drop in here at Malconia on Sat. for a social hour or so. Last Sunday evening the manager of the Scott Mission in Toronto had his sailboat in Lake Ontario capsize and in the process lost his life. The victim and his boat were discovered discovered by the Durham police just a short distance up the shore from where our daughter Mitzi and Bob Pick have their residence in Ajax. Rev. and Mrs. John Evans had as their guests this weekend weekend their son and his wife who also attended the Yelverton church service on Sunday a.m. Ms. Candy Malcolm recently recently returned home from Australia Australia and New Zealand. On the Thanksgiving weekend Candy attended the wedding of one of her employer's Nick who is part owner of Johnick Tours, the Tour Company in which she is involved. The wedding took place in Montreal. Montreal. Yelverton annual Roast Beef dinner was deemed a success with over 400 adult paid admissions plus quite a number of children. As per usual the majority of our clients clients were "off the road" many of whom make our Beef supper supper an annual event. One couple from Whitby purchased purchased around 16 tickets at one fell swoop. Also a number of guests come annually from Oshawa, Port Perry, Lindsay, Uxbridge as well as other local points. Special thanks to all the volunteer slave labour who contribute their efforts year after year. Rev.
