More will be heard of this next week along with the Latchkey Logic theme. With Christmas coming there's some good news for those who send quite a few Christmas cards; they are going to save 5 cents per stamp, courtesy of the postal department and the greeting card companies. The gimmick is that space will be left on cards for senders to fill in the postal code and if that is done, the cards will go for only 29 cents instead of 34 cents. The Town of Newcastle General Purpose committee has. given approval for a ten- sub-division proposed by Alec Moffat, Orono, on a parcel of land laying south of the fifth concession and immediately east of Highway 115. The sub-division is to have entrance off Somerville Drive east of Highway 115 and in the form of a cul-de-sac. Responds to Throne Speech Statement on The Throne Speech by Allan Lawrence, M.P. (Durham-Northumberland) The Throne Speech for this new Session of Parliament Parliament presents a credible, well-rounded program to meet the needs of Canadians Canadians and our country. Personally, I'm pleased to see a return to shorter Parliamentary Parliamentary Sessions with more frequent Throne Speeches. That means the federal government is now operating on a more business-like business-like basis. Rather than letting Parliament run on indefinitely and aimlessly as in the past, the Mulronèy government is presenting a legislative agenda which can be achieved in the short term, against which accomplishments accomplishments can be measured. measured. The basic aim is to continue continue strengthening our national national economy through sound financial policies, tax reform and trade initiatives, initiatives, with special assistance assistance where heeded "for farmers and other groups and regions. 1 I believe people in our area will welcome that, as^ well as the continued emphasis emphasis on legislation to protect protect battered women, against child abuse, violent pornography, trafficking in illegal drugs, the Criminal Code amendments to protect protect innocent citizens and assist victims of violence, and tightened immigration laws. I'm happy to see the inclusion inclusion of new conflict of interest interest laws which, I hope, will apply riot only to politicians politicians but also policy makers makers in the Public Service and Crown Corporations. This throne speech opening opening the second session of Canada's 33rd Parliament shows the Mulroney government government recognizes the day-to- day concerns of Canadians, and that it is prepared to answer answer them. BAHA'I FAITH "This world Is but one native land. Abandon that glory which Is the cause of discord, and turn unto that which promotes harmony. To the people ol Baha glory Is In knowledge, good deeds, good morals and wisdom -- not In native land, or station." Seen here is an ar chitect's rendering of the building which will be discussed discussed at the General Purpose Committee meeting next week. A luxury condominium building has been planned for a site at Wellington and Scugog Sts., in Bowmanville. Bowmanville. The seven-storey structure structure planned for the former Canadian Pacific Railroad Property would have 77 one or two bedroom units. It features features glassed-in balconies, an indoor swimming pool and underground parking. The building is designed so that the main entrance faces Scugog Street. There is a secondary entrance facing facing Wellington Street used only for servicing and limited limited parking. The building also has parking for 97 cars and Janet Rice said her husband and the architect have been careful to design a building which will discourage discourage people from parking parking on Wellington Street. The Rices are equally adamant about having the building conform to the established established housing in the area. Mrs. Rice said the seven-storey building isn't much taller than other houses in the area and that they plan to construct a brick masonry building which looks similar to the houses on Scugog and Wellington. Wellington. In fact, the first step made by the architect was to take pictures of the existing houses, Mrs. Rice said. "We've gone to great lengths to design a building that will look, to a certain extent, like any other building building on the street," she said. The Rices have been planning the building for some time now. Mr. Rice first bought the property from CPR 15 years ago and it still has the CPR shed on it. For the past ten years, they've worked to have a new building constructed on the lot. Their previous requests for a senior citizens' citizens' horiie were approved by the municipal council but rejected by the regional council because of inadequate inadequate sanitary sewer ca pacity on Scugog Street. In 1985, the lack of capacity capacity was relieved and Mrs. Rice says it's now sufficient for the proposed building. And after conducting market studies and surveys, the Rices changed their plans and replaced their plan for a seniors' home with a design for a luxury condominium with less density. density. Architectural drawings show the new building would have apartments that are approximately 850 to 1,500 sq. ft. The proposal is currently being considered by members members of Newcastle's town council. HAPPENINGS FROM TYRONE Thanksgiving Church Service Rev. The choir sang an arrangement of "Lead , on O King Eternal", which included included a solo by Gail Hasiuk, accompanied by Jacqueline Vaneyk. Friends of the Mc- Kinnell family, Mrs. Mabel Campbell, Clyde Forks, and Mrs. Betty Hopkins, Kingston, were in the congregation. Announcements: Rev. The sanctuary was a blue- grey sky with gravel flooring and green-grass trim. The profoundly happy, interdenominational interdenominational congregation converged from all corners of Durham Region and Port Hope area. The presiding clergy were Rev. David McKinnell, McKinnell, Rev. Ruth McKinnell, Tyrone, Rev. Fred Milnes, Orono. The Fall-coloured vista included the adjacent Tyrone far site where Eldorado Resources Resources had proposed, just two months earlier permanent storage of radioactive waste. In this setting, worship was voiced in word and in song, in gleaning from scripture and in prayer of confession, intercession intercession and thanksgiving. For Friday afternoon, October October 10, 1986, in Port Hope, Ontario, an announcement had been made to a crowd of about , 300' anxious people stating that the Eldorado Company had been ordered by the federal government to cancel its plan to bury radioactive radioactive waste on the site near Tyrone. An open-air,, interdenominational interdenominational service had been planned by some local clergy-people for the deeply concerned residents of the entire region, and after the Friday announcement the mood was of exuberant thanksgiving, so the supplication supplication went on. The Biblical story of creation creation was read from Genesis 1:1-31, "and God saw everything everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good." Psalm 77 personfies a troubled people, ending with the realiz ation that "Thou didst lead thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron" (v.20) In the gospel of Luke 17:20-21 are the words, "the kingdom of God is in the midst of you". Hymns used were "Spirit of Gentleness", words and music by Jim Manley, and "Let there be Light", (thy kingdom come, thy spirit turn to language, language, thy people speak together, together, thy spirit never fade... hallow the world God made.") Ruth McKinnill accompanied the singing on her guitar. Tyrone area residents are thankful and are breathing much more easily. They have learned a lot about their fellow countrymen and they are much more aware of their environment, physically and aesthetically. But we must all be aware that the problem with radioactive waste still exists in our general area. Federal Minister of Mines and Resources has said that the government is setting up a task force to look for a suitable site for a low-level radioactive radioactive dump. The task force is expected to report back within six months to a year. The problem is still with us and requires vigilance and an acceptable solution.
