St. John Ambulance Crew Hears About Cold Water Brownings St. John Ambulance Display at Bowmanville Mall The 871 Newcastle division division of St. John Ambulance met at the Bowmanville Hospital recently, where John Henry was the guest speaker. His topics were Cold Water Near Drowning and Hypothermia. Both were very informative. Seen here with Annie j are Steve Phillips, Sandy Greenslade, Mel Dempsey and Superintendent Douglas Boddy. G. Vandermolen Congratulations to our Junior and Midget Girls' Basketball Teams, both of which advanced to the quarter-finals of LOSSA, which was held at our school this past .weekend. In order to advance, the Juniors defeated a hard-fighting team from Uxbridge, by a landslide score of 63-20. The Midgets, also won their last game when they defeated a fast team from Picketing bv a score of 57-31. In the quarter finals, the Juniors met with defeat when they took to the court against Henry Street, of Whitby. The team played a very good game, however, with the absence of their key starters they didn't quite have enough to pull out the win, losing by the close score of 43-39, The Midget Girls also fell to defeat in their bid for the title, when they lost to Brock by a score of 65-26. Despite the losses, both teams can be proud of excellent seasons. Way to go girls. Moving on, more basketball was played; this time the boys' teams were activated for their first games of the season. The Senior Boys' played two games this week. The first against rival O'Neill, and the second against Central, of Oshawa. The team started out sluggishly in their opener against O'Neill, but fought back and held their .own. However, they didn't have quite enough for the win as they lost, 60-40. In their second game, the team played a good game, winning over Central by a score of 57-50. The Juniors and Midgets also played a game this, past week as they both played teams from Cobourg West. In contrast to the Seniors' opening game-both, of'these teams, opened i their season with wins as the Midgets won a landslide victory and the Juniors whipped their opponents by a score of 67-44. Last week, at the end of my article, I included a team profile of our Junior Boys' Basketball Team. In writing this profile I am sure I left out some key points or other items of interest to people who read the article. If anyone has any suggestions as to how to improve the profile, or any other part of the article, I would greatly appreciate the input. Sportsline By G. Vandermolen Approximately every 3-4 months, a transition takes place in high school sports. The boys' and girls' teams are ending their seasons and starting new ones. Such is the case right now in our school. The boys' football team finished their season and started basketball wheras the girls' basketball season has just ended and the next girls' sport, volleyball is going to begin this week. I submit this as my excuse for having only boys' basketball included in this article. All three of the boys' basketball teams, midget, junior and senior, participated in their first away game, when they travelled to Port Hope to play Trinity College. All three teams returned to Bowmanville with another one in the wins' column as they all won convincing games over T.C. All three teams also participated in another first, that being the first tournaments of the season. The midgets were not as successful as they would have hoped to be as they took part in an eight team, round-robin tournament in Pickering. The team won one game by defeating Ajax, 47-27. The juniors' tournament took place in Sutton. The junior teams' success, although not as great as they would have hoped was unparalled by any other Bowmanville team in their first tournament this year. The team lost their first game, won their second and then won a third game. This captured the consolation championship. Congratulations also to Vince Rimes for his efforts resulting In a M.V.P. Award. The seniors travelled to King City for their tournament last Friday and Saturday. The team lost their first game, won their second and lost again In tho consolation final. Both senior and junior teams will take part In tournaments at our school and In Ajax respectively. Come on out and see some great basketball talent.
