Bowmanville Audio-Vision 20 King Street West Telephone 623-2312 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, December 3,1986 13 Scores are Tight in Manvers Men's Hockey Action by Dave Perras Oldtimers, or at least those of us who can remember remember back to the days when Toe Blake was the kindly old coach of the Montreal Canadiens, love to boast about how much better better hockey was in the era of the maskless goalie. Why, today you may as well pull the goalie out of the net, and say what the heck, last shot wins the game. And you sure couldn't have said that back in the days when Tim Horton Horton and Bobby Baun were laying the lumber on anyone anyone so foolhardy to cross the Leaf blueline. And so, by gum, that was why it is a real pleasure to record the games of last Friday Friday night at the Manvers Arena. Not more than eight goals scored in either of them. Will the players also soon be wearing knitted turtleneck sweaters and using straight sticks? Bethany built up a three goal lead on Yelverton, thanks to two goals by Mike Corfe and another by Rob McKend.t Scott Manley assisted assisted on two of the three, but even that was not enough. Yelverton charged back with four markers of their own, started up by of his favourite son Mr. and Mrs. Ross Stutt. On Sunday, Mrs. Jeanette Layng and Dyana attended the Christmas supper for members of the Clarke Museum and Archives board held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Derek Barnett, Sixth Line. Ms. Linda Broome, Shawne and Scott of Oshawa were supper guests on Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Souch, Dwayne, Jodie and Heather. Mr. Bruce Trim of Newmarket Newmarket was a Sunday overnight overnight and Monday guest of his mother Mrs. Isabelle Trim. Rick Sheehy. Larry Currins then picked up the rest of the slack, scoring twice himself and setting up Don Timms for the winner at the 18:38 point of the third period. Bethany was not pleased. Darlington continues to be the talk of the league, a bunch of young, aggressive guys who come to play every night, or at least every Friday Friday night. This week it was Janetville's turn to be steamrolled, losing 6-2. Kevin Wild was the only player on the winning side to score twice, with Jim Wood, A1 Worsley, and John Tait. (Thanks for including the first names on the scoreshcet this week, guys, somehow it makes you seem more human.) Glen Fisher and John Watson stood up to the Darlington boys this week, with Watson scoring once and Fisher adding one assist to the goal that he counted himself. Perhaps Yelverton was able to make such an impressive impressive comeback this week because they were still smarting from the lashing that a shorthanded Pon- lypool team delivered a week previous. With only six players for most of the game (Duane McCabe was fully dressed only when the score was already 6-0). Pon- typool finished the match with a 9-2 win. Coach Ken Mehew couldn't have been more pleased with his side, who wasted no motion and gave a good clinic to any youngsters who happened to be in the arena. Gary Cox counted the astounding total of seven goals (a good season for some) to keep him in the accustomed spot at the top of the scoring charts. That same evening, Bethany beat Janetville. My apologies to goalscorers, as I missed that night's action with some overtime duties at work, and my not-so-reli- able sources tell me the final spread was 8-5, but couldn't remember the scorers. Sorpr guys. It won't happen again. I guess that I've compromised my journalistic journalistic integrity. You can take it out on me on the ice.
