Mrs. Lou Ann Birkott Purchasing and Supply Agent (416) 623-3379 Ex. 267 Date ol Publlcnllon: Docombor 10,1900 Elaine Sheridan Canadian Champ Wins Provincials Elaine Sheridan of Newcastle Village who is currently the Ontario and Canadian Senior Ladies raquetball champion, combined with Dave Fisher of Whitby-'to "Win the Ontario Pt-oVincihl'iB'iMiked: Doubles': : ToTirh'amfent held at ' the:-: Mayfair 'Club in Etobicoke recently. This event is the most prestigious prestigious one held in Ontario, with players from all over the country eligible. In order to win their class, Elaine and Dave had to complete 5 gruelling matches. Each match consisting of the best 3 games out of five. Elaine and Dave lost only one game out of all their matches. This is quite an accomplishment accomplishment considering the competition. In their final match, they really turned on the jets defeating top seeds, Sue Beatty and Murry Hurst of Hamilton 3 straight games. When Elaine's regular partner, her husband, Bob had knee surgery last year she was forced to find a new partner. Dave, who is only 25 years old, is one of the top tournament players in the district. He's a converted squash player who is really an up and comer. Since the two joined forces, they have, been unbeatable. With Dave's quick reflexes and deadly corner kill shots, combined, with Elaine's speed and hard passing drives they are an awesome combination. Raquetball is a fast growing sport and Elaine who stands 5 feet 4 inches, 120 lbs. is proof that size is not the least bit important in this game. Elaine, who is in her sixth year of competition, became the Canadian Senior Ladies champion by winning this prestigious event last year in Toronto. She had to defeat competitors from as far away as Edmonton and Quebec, New Brunswick, etc. In 1985, she became the Ontario champion only to go to Kelowna B.C. and finish a disappointing 5th place. Most competitors would have been happy with this; but with her desire and competitive spirit she considered it a failure, In her mind she felt if her game had been up to par, second place would have been hers. To add to her disappointment, she never got to play the eventual winner, World Champion Heather McKay who retired after winning this event. Just to say that you played against a world champion like Heather, even if you just squeeked a point or two, would be something you could tell your grandchildren. After resting her tired arm this summer, Elaine Is now in full swing for the upcoming tournaments. This pretty brunette from Newcastle is hoping to peak by early spring of 1987 when she will have to defend her title in Winnipeg. Good Luck I Eagles Tie Cobourg 5-5 by Dan Moriarity The Cowan Pontiac sponsored sponsored Bowmanville Eagles played the Cobourg Cougars to a 5-5 tie on Sunday evening at the Bowmanville Memorial Arena. The home team played a rather sloppy first period and this allowed the underdog Cougar team to take an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Rob Doncaster. John Young tied it for the Eagles at the 13:20 mark but a quick reply by Cobourg's Jeff Waldie gave Cobourg a /2-1 lead after twenty minutes. Rob Schlèchter scored at 1:48 in the second period to tie the game once again and î'k minutes later Mark Hickey beat Cobourg netminder Dave Beddard to give the Eagles the lead for the first time in the game. Bowmanville scored an early third period goal as Chris Dreossi took a pass from Randy Ellis and deposited the puck in the net to make it a 4-2 game. Jeff Waldie narrowed the.,gap to 4-3. at 12:54 as Cotiourg' enjbÿed a two man advantage. Twenty-nine seconds later, and with one man still in the penalty box, Darcy Huber scored a breakaway goal to restore the two goal lead. Cobourg fought back, however, scoring goals at 16:02 and 18:46 to salvage a tie. Both goals came from the stick of Cobourg captain Ray Murphy, who earned the first star for his play during the game, Waldie was the second star while Bowmanville's John Young was the third star. The Eagles seemed not to have their usual intensity against the Cougars who have only won two games this year. The Eagles now have a won- lost-tied record of 11-3-1 with an 8-0-1 record at home. A positive factor in Sunday's game was that just about everyone contributed to the game with 10 players collecting points and no one collecting more than two points, evidence of some solid teamwork. The Eagles will be back in action at home this Sunday at 7:30 p.m. against the Little Britain Merchants. Something To Think About GARY CONWAY PURPOSE OF Embalming Is only required by law In cases where the deceased had one ol a low specific contagious diseases or it the body Is to be transported outside Provincial borders or on public carrier. However, embalming Is almost always routinely done as soon as possible alter death, and as long as the funeral director has received permission from tho family to conduct the process. There are various reasons lor this. Tho primary purpose ol embalming Is to prosorvo the body lor the visitation and funeral, and retard tho bacterial growth. II tho family wishes lo hnvo tho body prosonl at tho lunornl, embalming would bo nocoosnry. At llio same time, restoration procedures would bo lollowod. This involves EMBALMING shaping and cosmetology work to make the deceased appear as presentable as possible. Under provincial quldollnes, embalming In Iho most simple definition, Is tho total disinfection, preservation, and restoration ol human remains tor an Indollnlto period ol time. II Iho family requested that tho remains nol bo embalmed, Iho lunorol director would probably recommend Immodlato disposition ol tho body by either cremation or burial.
