r l 16 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, December 10,1986 Rotarians Told About Hockey Training in the U.S.S.R. Approximately 30 Canadian Canadian and American hockey players have travelled to the Soviet Union during the last three years in a program program which must surely be the world's most unique Hockey camp. ' Brian Proctor, the organizer organizer of the annual 28 day Hockey excursion to the U.S.S.R., was guest speaker last week at the Bowman- v.ille Rotary Club. He explained that the program combines his love of travel with his passion for hockey. And it enables young athletes from North America and the Soviet Union to train together and learn from one another. ■The learning experience falls partly into the category category .of hockey skills, since the boys spend most of their time in drills, on-ice practices, practices, and exhibition games. But the program is also an exercise in understanding other ways of life. "We try to leave the politics politics out of this," explained Mr. Proctor at the outset of his speech. Rather, the organization organization endeavours to create the sort of atmosphere atmosphere where people can meet on a one-to-one level. It's the sort of meeting which might occur in a friendly game at the Bowmanville Bowmanville Arena when the teams are from nearby communities. communities. After almost four weeks of hockey training and general general travel in the U.S.S.R., the participants undoubtedly undoubtedly form opinions of life in the Soviet Union. But these thoughts are based on actual experience. "It comes right down to educating educating young people, so they can make a decision on what they have actually seen and what they have actually actually lived," Mr. Proctor told Bowmanville Rotarians. Rotarians. Mr. Proctor, coach of the senior hockey team at Trinity Trinity College School in Port Hope and the college's director director of admissions, explains explains that the international international hockey camp is located located in the city of Minsk. A visit to Moscow is on the itinerary as is a stop in Finland for three days on the return leg of the trip. Mr. Proctor said after his remarks to the Rotary Club that his hockey players represent represent a wide range of abilities, adding that superior skills in hockey are not the only basis for deciding deciding who will travel to the U.S.S.R. He also selects players for this unique training camp on the basis of commitment commitment to the sport, self- reliance, maturity, and other personal qualities. The end result is not only a hockey experience of a lifetime but also a unique learning experience. "It's sharing the ice and working with the terrific Soviet kids who are really like our own kids," said Mr. Proctor. For one thing, the Soviet Union caters mainly to the most highly talented athletes. Although Minsk has over a million residents, residents, there are only about 750 boys playing hockey on the city's two indoor rinks and one outdoor ice surface. surface. Unlike Canadian coaches, who are mainly volunteers, the Soviet Union's young hockey players are coached by fulltime fulltime professionals. "Every guy who's coaching in the Soviet Union is a graduate of a physical institute. He has a degree," said Mr. Proctor. So, although the philosophy of the Soviet Union is ostensibly one of egalitarianism, its hockey system is aimed at developing developing the excellent players rather than the average or Hospital League Ladies' High Single - Lynn Lowe - 301; Ladies' High Triple - Lynn Lowe - 736; Ladies' High Average - Susie Marshall-200.
