Merrilee Brown, Editor-In-Chief B.H.S. Peer Bring Christmas Cheer There are a lot of kids out there today with a lot of problems: drugs, divorce, academic problems, loneliness, peer pressure, etc. It's no easy task being a teenager and sometimes its a lonely struggle. The Peer Counsellors at Bowmanville High School are "always there to be a friend" to anyone who needs or wants one. They're there to try to help. There are 8 peer counsellors at B.H.S. They come from a variety of backgrounds and are all very different people. They need to be; there must be a variety of peer counsellors to relate to a variety of kids with a variety of problems. Kim Moore, Nancy Vella, David Smith, Stacey Madill, Bryan Beatty, Joanne McQuarrie, Julie Higginson and Terry Darbey are Grade 11 and 12 students who submitted their applications to be peer counsellors last spring. Students decide to apply for several reasons. Some have known other peer counsellors and have become interested in the programme. Others have had personal problems like going through a divorce and would like to share the experiences they've gained. Still others just "like the idea of helping other kids." Peer Counsellors perform many duties. In September, each Peer Counsellor is assigned one Grade 9 homeform. They then conduct individual interviews with each grade 9 to help ease the transition from Senior Public to High School. They are "big brothers or sisters" to every grade 9 so every student knows they always have at least one friend. They will soon start seminars on study skills for the Grade 9's so they'll have some idea of how to approach their first examination. But Peer Counsellors help all students, not just the grade 9's. They help find tutors for students in need of academic aid. Joanne McQuarrie and Bryan Beatty run a job placement programme where kids may find part-time work. Bryan Beatty is attempting to organize a Student's Against Drunk Driving (SADD) group. The counsellors carry out social programmes and are there to be a friend and a confidant to anyone who needs one. But the Peer Counsellors are careful not to overstep their boundaries. When students are in need of greater help. For example, when a kid is suicidal, they immediately refer the problem to the Student Services Guidance Counsellors for referral to professional help. Kim Moore is co-ordinating yet another activity : a canned food drive for the poor this Christmas. Donations of canned and non-perishable food items will be accepted in the main foyer from Monday, December: 8th to Friday, December 12th. The food will then be donated to the Salvation Army in their Christmas Appeal. When Kim '•phoned the The Peer wanted -to Army, they were very receptive of thé idea.
