No. 2 Between Port Hope and Cobourg HYUTTDAI by Tammy Hill While the typical 13-year- old boy may have only ice cream, cake and cookies on his mind, Joel Siebenga ponders the memories he holds from the Ontario Legislature. With an 89 per cent average, average, the young Bowmanville resident, was accepted to serye as a Parliamentary page. Joel describes his five week stay in Toronto (October (October 14 - November 14) as "a lot of fun." Along with the other 21 pages, Joel spent most of his day sending messages and glasses of water to M.P.P.'s. Many mornings were filled with inserting duties, which included putting together M.P.P. books of votes and proceedings, orders of the day, bills, and the Hansard. Joel commented that in addition to regular duties, he had his own specific task to carry out. This consisted of the clerk's books and the Legislative calendar. Each day was planned out for the pages, including: House duty, a couple of hours of schooling, and free time. Joel mentioned that the House took a day off during the time he was serving, serving, allowing he and the others an opportunity to visit Toronto. "We visited the Museum, . the Art Gallery, the "Y" and the University of Toronto," Joel said. As a grade eight student at Knox Christian School, Joel was amazed at the size of the university. Aside from the politics and the culture, Joel was able to experience living with another family and took on the responsibility of meeting new friends. Joel had no difficulty with either. He said that he gained many new friends and really enjoyed boarding boarding with another family, especially since they had a little baby. Although Joel came home with a number of experiences, experiences, he has a few more memorable ones. "Minister of Labour Bill Wrye snapped his fingers to summon me. He handed me an envelope with ten thousand dollars in it and told me to give it to Rick Hansen. He also said not to waste time in bringing it there. On my way up to the V.I.P. gallery I noticed that it was in cash." Another clear memory and large influence on Joel's term as- a page was 1 -.Lieutenant .Governor,-Lin-, coin Alexander. Joel described a dinner 1 he attended with the Lieutenant Governor as "a classy meal." He also describes describes Mr. Alexander as "a really nice guy." Finally back in "the swing of things", Joel remarked that returning to school was just a little bit difficult. But he's glad to be back. However Joel hasn't forgotten forgotten the impression politics politics made on him. "In Ottawa Ottawa you can be a page in university. I haven't decided decided if I want to do it yet, but I'm thinking about it, he said." Joel urges boys and girls aged 12 and 13 to contact their local M.P.P. to inquire about the program. "It truly is great." Bessie Vaneyk Festival of Lights Tour A flick of a switch magically created a fairy-land of coloured lights and animation at Niagara Falls, New York, on Saturday, November 29, 1986. A bus load of Bowmanville Bowmanville and Tyrone area folk joined another 120 bus loads of captivated people at the Convention Centre at Niagara Falls where they also enjoyed entertainers Mel Tillis, Minnie Pearl, Tom Netherton and comedian Frankie Rapp. A Christmas light tour proved very imaginative, leading to a show of animated toys and animals on Grand Island, and a spectacular display of antique toys. The Canadian- side light tour at Niagara contrasted, but proved enchanting with the lighted towers, the huge ferris wheel, and buildings. Good fellowship and a Christmas dinner completed a fine week and holiday.
