T.T. Edwards, M.C.I.P. Director of Planning Hampton Municipal Offices Hampton, Ontario LOB 1 JO Date of Publication: December 17,1986 Letter to Editor Dear Mr. James, I read with interest The Statesman's December 3rd article "Concern Over Mentalist at High School." Given that the "scriptures clearly warn against the dangers of using sorcery and occult practices," perhaps The Statesman should put its own house in order. I note in the December 3rd "Bits and Pieces" item entitled "Who's Confused?" that you refer to your reporters as experts at "mind reading." Is this not the very sorcery and occult practice we are warned against? A mentalist at the high school is bad enough; mentalists at the Statesman is outrageous! Furthermore, although Peter Parrott (now a trustee of the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education) has rightly been elevated (to the position of Assistant Editor at The Canadian Statesman), was he not once himself one of your reporters-that is, one of your mind-readers? If so, should he not, as a former mind-reader and mentalist, declare a conflict of interest in the Board of Education's investigation into mentalism? Yours, as sincerely as possible, D.J.
