Kool Reaches Finals During Tournament On Monday, Dec. 22 Kool Bantams travelled to Newcastle to participate in a holiday hockey tournament. The opening game began at 7:00 a.m. and saw Kool meet host Newcastle and come away with a 3-2 victory. Newcastle opened the scoring but 4 minutes later Billy MacIntyre tied the game with an excellent shot, finishing off a fine play from Richard MacCheyne. With a minute and a half remaining in the 2nd period and the score 2-1 for Newcastle, Steve Bizi tied the score and then set up Scott Selleck for the winner. Excellent defensive play and strong goaltending were the hallmark of the scoreless third period. At 12:00 noon Kool met Bewdley in the "A" semis and overpowered them 7-0. Steve Bizi led the way with 3 goals while Richard Smit had 2 with singles going to Rich MacCheyne and Billy MacIntyre. Earning assists were Mike Colbourne with 2 and Rich MacCheyne, Billy MacIntyre, Bryan James and Steve Kay with one each. Dave Killens earned the shutout. The "A" championship saw Kool met Northminister of the OCHL and came up short. Although we skated and checked well we had too many penalties and too many missed opportunities. The result was a 5-1 loss with Steve Bizi scoring our lone goal after an excellent check by Scott Selleck got him the puck. Only our 3rd loss of the year this is the first time we have been beaten by more than 1 goal. Four Goals Leads Victory " •,t? l' . "x0 Led by Eric Janssens' 4-goal performance, the Bowmanville St. Marys Cement midgets came out ahead in a wide open hockey game by a 8-7 score over Port Perry on Dec. 15th. Port Perry jumped into an early 1-0 lead after only 0:20 seconds into the game. They then made it 2-0 at the halfway halfway mark of the period. Mike Houston tied the game with an unassisted goal 0:27 seconds after Janssens' goal. Port Perry made it 3-2 only to have Bowmanville come back and tie the game on a goal by Eric Janssens assisted by Mark Matheson and Chris Hall. In the second period, Janssens on his third goal of the game, gave the Toros the lead for the first when he scored from Matheson and Davidson. With Port Perry tying the game at 4-4, Eric Janssens scored from Rob Davidson and Dave Morrison to put his club ahead once again at 5 4. Port Perry then got two quick goals to jump into a 6-5 lead in the wide open game. Before the period ended, Scott Burns tied the game 6-6 with Brad Carnegie earning the lone assist. Rob Davidson gave the Toros a 7-6 lead when he scored after 0:32 seconds into the third period, Scott Brunt and Mark Matheson assisted. Port Perry, on a powerplay, tied the game once again only to have the Toros' Kevin Flintoff score what was to the eventual game winner with Scott Burns earning the assist. Cement Men Win and Figure Skaters Do Well Lose in Campbellford The Bowmanville St. Marys Cement Midgets took part in the Dec. 14th Campbellford Midget Hockey Tournament. The one day tournament consisted, .of, teams from Oshawa, . .Sunderland, -Wàrkvyortli,, Newcastle, Norwood, Port Perry, Bowmanville and the host team Campbellford. The Toros' first game was against Warkworth and some superb goaltending by Bowmanville's Travis Martyn and a three goal performance by John Edmondson carried the Toros to a 4-1 win. Bowmanville opened the scoring in the first period when Dave Morrison scored on a shot from the point with Rob Davidson and John Edmondson assisting at 4:30. The 1-0 score held up thanks to Travis Martyn. The Toro goaltender was tested early and throughout the game by Warkworth but he came up with some super stops which left the opposition just shaking their heads. In the second period, and with a man advantage, John Edmondson got his first of three goals to give the Toros a 2-0 lead. Rob Davidson and Mike Houston assisted. Warkworth narrowed the score to 2-1 when they finally beat the Toro netminder on a scramble around the net. Martyn made the initial stop on a hard shot from the point. But the loose puck eluded the goaltender and in the scramble the Warkworth player put it across the goal line. With 0:50 seconds remaining in the period, Edmondson restored the Toro lead to two goals when he notched his second goal of the game. Holding on to a 3-1 lead in the third, Edmondson picked up his third goal of the game to give the Toros a 4-1 victory. Norwood 5 Bowmanville 2 In their second game, the Toros went up against Norwood to see which team would face-off against the other semi-final between Newcastle and the Port Perry Majors. Bowmanville's Mike Houston opened the scoring after only five seconds into the first period. ,,Chris Hall took the opening fàcè : off and got the puck to Houston, the Toro player breaking through the defence, let a low shot go that hit the corner for a 1-0 lead. With the Toros a man short, Norwood tied the game at 1-1. The period ended deadlocked at one apiece but again as in the first game, goaltending played a major role. This time the Toros' Darrin Bunker had to come up with a few big saves as Norwood outshot the Toros by a wide margin. In the second period, Norwood went ahead 2-1, capitalizing on their second straight powerplay when the Toros' Terry Kellett was sent off for roughing. Norwood then made it 3-1, while playing short-handed and a Toro giveaway lead to the goal. Brad Carnegie put the Toros back into the game when he finished off a play started by Scott Burns and Kevin Flintoff, cutting Norwood's lead to 3-2. Bowmanville pressed for the equalizer especially in the latter stages of the third period. However, the Toros were caught up ice, allowing Norwood to come out of their zone with a three-on-one which lead to their fourth goal with only 0:14 seconds remaining. Norwood ended up advancing to the final with a 5- 2 win with their fifth goal coming with 0:01 second left as Bowmanville was caught trying to remove their goaltending and couldn't get back in time to cover the final shot.
