"Jealousy may be born with love, but it doesn't die when love dies." "Jealous people aren't jealous for a good or sufficient reason. They're jealous because they're jealous." "Jealousy is a cruel as the grave." "0! Beware my Lord of jealousy. It's the green-eyed monster which mocks the meat it feeds on." "I'm not a jealous man, but I can't see what she sees in him." "For I, the Lord thy God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generations of them that hate me." "Rumor is a pipe blown by surmises, jealousies and conjectures." "Jealousy feeds on suspicion. It turns into fury or it ends, as we pass from suspicion to certainty." "Jealousy is the resentful suspicion of a rival, real or imagined." In its extreme form, jealousy is power exercised over another person. "If I can't have you, nobody can," has been part of the motivating force behind many murders. Such jealous passion is not a sign of love. Jealousy is possessiveness. To be jealous is to demand someone else's exclusive loyalty. Therefore, in jealousy there's more of the need to be loved, than there is a desire to love. Extreme jealousy is a sign of extreme immaturity. The jealous person demands unconditional love. That's the sort of love that only an infant has the right to expect from its parents, love given without expecting anything in return. We've all experienced jealousy at Some time or other. It's a painful affliction. Unfortunately, little is written or said about the day- to-day agonies suffered by the mate of a jealous person. That's a different kind of hell. The jealous one is forever demanding reassurances of exclusive love and loyalty. But there can never be enough reassurances to satisfy some jealous people. The partners of such people are always on the, rack, trying to prove their faithfulness but never succeeding. Their relief may come only when they abandon the effort, and the jealous partner as well. "The malicious accusations of a jealous person are more poisonous than a mad dog's tooth." Exercises have been developed to help couples suffering with this problem. They resemble desensitizing exercises used with phobias. Essentially, they involve increasingly longer periods of separation between the partners, from minutes- to hours to days and even longer. Reassurances given by the spouse who goes out (as to. where they're going, with whom, etc.) to the fretful jealous partner who remains at home are correspondingly reduced a little at a time. Over a long period of doing the exercises, one can begin to outgrow jealousy and learn to trust. It's hard to work. Meanwhile, the non-jealous partner can slowly begin to enjoy a little more freedom from constant suspicion. Jealousy is no laughing matter. For that very reason, we've had to make jokes about it. As one wise guy put it, "I want your love for several reasons, and not only to prevent other people from getting it." Lloyd Scott is a Family Counsellor working in the Durham Region.
